than a decade looks brighter because of a booming breeding program at a Graham area ranch This spring the 38 red wolves grew to 49 with the birth of 11 pups Eight were born to one mother and three to another The animals may represent the largest group of red wolves in the country and the program is the core of an effort to save the wolves from extinction the international stud bookkeeper for the red said Gene Leo director of Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium also the administrator for the species survival plan in conjunction with the American Association of Zoological Parks and Basically that means the Tacoma area program keeps track of the breeding and genetic information to ensure that the endangered species population remains viable and healthy Leo said Red wolves once roamed freely in the southeastern United States but their numbers dwindled to the point that they were placed on the Endangered Species list in 1967 There was fear that the animals would become extinct Greatly reduced in number some of the wolves had begun to breed with coyotes By 1981 wolves were declared biologically extinct in the wild with not enough remaining to propagate the species The first red wolves arrived here in 1970 and the propagation program was set up at Dale United Farms a mink ranch and game farm in Graham The program is a cooperative effort involving the US Fish and Wildlife Service the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma the Point Defiance Zoo and the Tacoma Zoological Society Leo said he believes the program has succeeded in maintaining a pure strain of red wolves ultimate hope of course is to be able to release red wolves from our breeding program back into areas of (their) former in the southwestern and southeastern United States Leo said IE KIP JH'IJIJJU QHP IHAMih mwp Hi
