An amusing incident occurred this week, the like of which in years past has set in circulation many amusing tales regarding this summer city of Meth-odlBts. Like all the rest, It is not at all typical of sentiment In the camp-meeting city, but the result of some cramped, old-fafchioned Ideas that unfortunately are slill held by some of the elderly divines who got Into the camp-meeting association at its inception, and, unlike most of the brethren of that day, are still alive. A bespectacled and be-whiskered old dominie of the Methodist persuasion and with much influence in association affairs on Tuesday discovered a resemblance between chewing pjim and that hated weed, tobacco. Forthwith orders went out taken by all the grove "cops" that hereafter chewing gum muBt not be sold within the confines of the sacred city. Tobacco, of course, Is not sold here except on the sly and intoxicants are never sold, the association fathers say.

First, it was the Indian, who was skilled in the use of the primitive bow and arrow and the spear and the deadfall; then, in the progress of human events, came the white man, whose eye and nerve and endurance had been trained in Indian and revolutionary warfare, and who was armed with the flintlock and the net and the trap, while now it is the sportsman, with the repeating shotgun, magazine rifle and smokeless powder, who awakens the echoes of the deep forest and mountainside and who whips the limpid waters with rod and fly.

Clark and MIrs It Is seldom that a "summer girl" attains as great popularity as has this "summer girl" with the sliver threads marking thulr way through her hair. And there are few "summer men" who receive as much atlentlon as does the husband of their vaco.tion weeks on the Fulton Chain of lakes to-day are women, and they fish and row and tramp through the woods and themselves Immensely. The growth i.f camps and cottages along the lakes, and in the permanent residences In the villages -f Old Forge and Fulton Chain has been very rapid lu the last few years. The railway entrance to Old Forge at the foot of the lakes In at Fulton Chain, where a branch road, two miles long, connects with the Adirondack division of the New Tork Central. Lumber mills make the life of Fulton Chain one of bustle and excitement, but Old Forge, which lost its sawmill two years ago because th-3 buildings occupied state land, thrives upon tourist travel, which is increasing Iwre both summer and winter.

The hotels and resorts on the lakes above have their season in the summer, but the Invalid or the sports-nun may obtain comfortable quarters in the village at anv time of the year. Many in House the season. Mr. and Mrs. Charles 8, Brown and le Misses Brown are at the Pocono Mountain House.

Mrs. Williams has never lost her brightness, her cheerlnrss, nor among the rocks- forming the river bed where Peel dock slill stands on the south shore of Wellesley Island. Several years ago local parties dragged the spot for several days and succeeded in raising the boat anchor which lay four years ago imbedded in the coast, an object of great Interest to every visitor and passing boat crowd. The anchor is now no longer there, and is said to have been presented to a New York City museum. Manv newspaper and magazine articles have been writen about the Sir Robert Peel and this publicity has brought a good deal of historical attention to the Thousand Islands.

If the movement to organize the several publlo spirited men who have the Interest of the Islands at heart with the idea of raising th ship and properly housing her on the shora of the island, is successful, the proposition should be a very paying venture, for there is not a single visitor to this beautiful resort region who would not willingly pay ait admission price to look the old bark over and inspect the other curiosities that might drift into the museum. This is a matter which deserves serious thought, on the part of river residents and the transportation companies, for apart from, the good financial aspect of the scheme, th historical Interest amused would be ample compensation of itself.
