Many Conferences have arranged direct contact with' the Home Relief Bu reau but there are few which prefer to do this through the St. Vincent de Paul Society which is pleased to serve them. The Annual Luncheon Meeting of Secretaries of Conferences will be held in Columbus Club prob ably Saturday. September 28.

Notice will be sent to every secretary and 100 per cent attendance Is expected This is a very important meeting and presidents and officers of Conferences should urge the secretary to attend. It is also planned to hold a lunch eon meeting for the Spiritual Di rectors of Conferences, the time and place of this meeting will be an nounced later, but it will probably take place prior to the meeting of Secretaries. The Secretary is receiving many inquiries regarding the new orange and blue stamp plan for the distribution of food and surplus food which has been adopted by the De partment of Welfare, to take effect September 3. In order to avoid con fusion it is necessary to explain that these orange and blue stamps have nothing to do with the surplus food tickets which the Conferences have been distributing for time. The orange and blue stamps will be distributed only through the Home Relief Bureau and only to families who are receiving public relief.

It may include those receiving Veterans' Relief and Blind Relief later on. The Federal Surplus food tickets which the Conferences have been distributing will be continued and the Conferences may continue to distribute these tickets only to fam ilies who are not receiving public relief. However, the number of food stations where these surplus food tickets can be redeemed will be reduced from the present number of 27 to 3. These three food stations will be- located at 4th Ave. and 18th 1220 Bedford Ave.

Pr.ariete Phase Jasnetaart President Farley read several letters from Presidents of Particular Councils, Chicago, Boston and Hartford, commending the Brooklyn Diocesan Council for the fine account of the General Meeting held at Belle Harbor, July 21, which was printed in full in THE TABLET. One Council is using the report as Spiritual Reading at its meetings. President Farley presented Mr. William Shannon and Mr.

Ralph Goodman, representatives of the Commodities Distribution Division of the Department of Welfare, who' kindly consented to explain the new orange and blue stamp food plan which will take effect in Brooklyn, September 3. Mr. Shannon spoke as follows: The Stamp Food Plan "As you know, only individuals and families receiving aid from the Department of Welfare of the City of New York, Home Relief Division, are eligible for stamp distribution at present, and these are divided into two classes: "1. Those eligible to partake In the Stamp Plan benefits. "2.

Those not eligible to share In its benefits. "The eligibles include all Home Relief cases having cooking fa such as all single individuals whose semi-monthly relief checks totaled $3.50 or more, and all families where the semi-monthly relief check exceeds by 60 cents or more the total arrived at by multiplying the number of members in a family both over and under 16 years of aee by S3. "We will cite, as an example, the Jones family. They are five in number. Their semi-monthly check amounts to $40.

Under the Stamp Plan they -sin receive a check for $23 and $15 in orange stamps, redeemable in all food stores for any item in the store, and also $7.50 in blue stamps redeemable only for such items as are declared sur plus by the Surplus Marketing Association of the Department of Ag riculture. These items presently include all type of Pork products. Butter, Eggs, various Gram products, fresh vegetable items, etc. "The procedure followed by the Department of Welfare in issuing these stamps is somewhat as fol lows: The Jones family is sent an application form containing per tment information regarding the Stamp Plan. They are asked to return the application form on a given date.

If the application is not returned, an investigator is sent to find out why the Jones family has not returned the appli- was present, explained the details of the orange and blue stamp system and also answered any que-that were askea. Salvage Bureau Report The Salvage Bureau Committee reported during the summer months the quantity of paper, clothing and household articles collected by the Salvage Bureau is considerably less than during the rest of. the year because so many regular contributors are out of the city. While the contributors may escape the warm weather, those who are assisted, by the work of the Salvage Bureau must remain in the city and the number of calls to supply household articles and clothing does not decrease very much. During the month of June 82 families were supplied with 249 pieces of furniture, 127 pieces of clothing and 25 pairs, of shoes.

The Bureau Is taking advantage of the period of lull in the collections to have the wagons and trucks pointed and repaired. Conference members are asked to continue their interest in the work of the Salvage Bureau. A supply of post cards is available for distribution. Mr. Thomas Carey, Chairman of the Visiting Committee to the City Prison, reported this institution Is visited regularly every Friday eve ning.

The Kings County and Cumber land Street Hospital Visiting Com mittees reported visits are made regularly every Sunday to these in stitutions. Henry J. Shields, Chairman of the Bishop McDonnell Vacation Camp Committee, reported the Camp is being operated to its full capacity. The nrv? unit which ha been added accommodates 60 children and the total number of chil dren tch will be cared for this summer will be more than 2,100. With the increased capacity the camp cares for more children than FISCHER'S BUTTERCUP BREAD is now One of Your Greatest Food Sources of VITAMIN Bl Scientists have? discovered that the average American diet is deficient in Vitamin Bl.

Remember, the Stamp Plan is elective on the part of the clients and they are not compelled to participate in Its benefits. Should they elect not to receive the stamps, their relief check of $40 will remain $40 and their status with the relief authorities will in no way be affected. However, they will no longer be considered eligible for surplus food books.

"Those not eligible under the Stamp Plan Include all those whose semi-monthly relief check does -not smount to enough to cover the $3 worth of orange stamps for each member of a family and leave a cash balance of at least 50 cents, payable by check. In this category will fall those receiving supplementary relief; Board of Child Welfare Joint Care Cases, etc. These families will continue to receive sur- food books from the Home Re lief Division. Some women Imagine preserving and pickling is a difficult undertaking, but they are very much mistaken, as there are only a few simple rules that have to be observed to assure success. One of the most Important things to bear in mind when pickling is use the very best cider vinegar. Some vinegar on the market Is made with an acid and is apt to eat into the fruits and vegetables. A pure apple cider vinegar or pear vinegar will preserve vegetables and fruits indefinitely.

White wine vine gar is excellent for preserving some vegetables. When 6Ugar is boiled with the vinegar to make a syrup it should not be boiled so long that it will become too sticky. If it does, dilute it jwith some more vinegar; otherwise the vegetables end fruits will not absorb the liquid and will spoil easily. Picklinc should never be done In vessels of brass, copper or tin, as the action of the acid in the vinegar! on such metis may result in poison- ing the picltks. When sealing pickled products place a small circular paper which has been dipped in paraffin on the top of the jar, then line the cover with the paraffin mixture and seal.

In this way the vinegar will net corrode the metal-top jars. The glass-top jars do not need In be treated in this way. In fact, all pickled preserves are so easy to keep that jars and bottles with mayonnaisev dressing or other food products come in can be cleaned and used for pickling purposes. Peach Gateau Scoop out the center of a round or square sponge cake, or individual sponge cakes. Peel and slice peaches, allowing about one medium-sized peach for each serving; sprinfele over with lemon juice to keep from discoloring.

Sweeten to taste with powedered sugar and put in the center of the sponge cake i shells. Cover with stlflv beaten milk. Garnish berries are ideal for making this dessert as they will not have to be scooped out in the center. Alabama Salad 2 small onions 3 cup sour cream. 4 medium cucumbers cup vinegar.

-Chop onions very fine; pare and shce cucumbers, sprinkle with salt, cover with ice water and let stand hour. Drain, add onions, sprinkle with pepper or cayenne, and dress with cream and vinegar mixed to-gether. Serve on crisp lettuce leaves. This palad can be served with mayonnaise or dress ing if the sour cream dressing 1- ino. desired.

Chopped green pep pers also go well with the onions and cucumbers. The sour cream on top of a sour quart of milk be used for this purpose. Peach Jam 1 lb. peach pulp cup water 1 peach pit 1 inch cinnamon stick to 23 lb. sugar Vt inch ginger root Ji tsp.

allspice tsp. cloves Blanch peaches in boiling water. cold -dip and remove skins and pits Mash pulp. Add sugar and spices (tied in a bag). Cook until mix ture is thick and clear let simmer but do not boil.

Remove spice bag. Pack into clean hot Jars and seal immediately. The spices may be omitted if a plain peach jam Is desired. Apple pulp may be substituted for part of peach pulp. Instead of the spices, the Juice of 1 lemon and 12 peach pits may be added to give flavor.

Peach Sundae Sauce Corabina cup sugar with V. cup water and bring io a boil. Add 2 cups sliced fresh peaches and simmer 3 or 4 minutes. Add 1 tbp. lemon Juice and 2 drops almond extract.

Makes 1 cups sauce and has fresh peace flavor, yet will not discolor on standing. Very good to serve with ice cream or any dessert.
