JAMES J. FINNERTY. Bronx, Feb. 20. Campaign for Christian Cards at Easter Dear Sir: All worthy Christians agree that Christmas and Easter are days on which are to be emphaslz-d historic religious events in the life; of Christ.

The following is a copy of a letter being sent out 'by a group of Christians to certain dealers and buyers of greeting cards. I am happy to have been selected to "get lit touch with THE TABLET." Cauccs Camoaifn Buyers and dealers (not fpeaklng for a few select religious houses tha make a business of selling choicf religious cards) aClrm that there are but few cards on the common market which have ai religiohs theme. Dealers declare that thife lack of religious cards is due chiefly to the lack of demand. Whether the dealers could increase this demand by having suitable religious cards on display whether they could encourage a greater demand by havlixs the cards handy is not our business here. Their word is taken, "There exists little demand." Purpose To arouse a timely protest against the use of cards or messages which directly or indirectly minimize or materialize the noble sentiments iI Christian Holidays.

To Insist that such days as Easter and Christmas owe their Importance to the Ideal Personality of Christ. To aid in insuring that a suitable way by means of the greeting cards may be found for expressing wholesome, Chrt.tlsn wishes on the occasions of these Feasts. We believe That most Americans are religious minded. That, while dir.a?ieeirg many things, they agree that Easter and Christmas are times of spedinl religious expressions. That a sit-able and respectful religious tpne will raUter increase the sincerity! of any expression of decent human interest.

19. This Is the Stuff for Which Catholics Pay Taxes Dear Sir: Surely the age of miracles is not past! Today the Campus" (C. C. N. Y.

Day Session newspaper) "speaks" for millions of Catholics in reference to the ban ning of the City College Monthly by Dean Moore of the Business Cen ter. The editor says, "The bigoted and intolerant views of the Very Rev. McCann are not the attitude of millions of Catholics, who believe firmly ta the American Ideas of the freedom of the press." It would be amazing if the editor could prove that such vast numbers of Catholics approve coarse misrepresentation of their Church. In one issue the monthly slurred Negroes and Catholics. A wave of criticism resulted in a weak apology.

Instead of becoming more cautious, the next issue contained a disgusting version of Catholic doctrine. From observation, my personal conviction is that the majority of those who support these literary magazines seek not the literary content but the sex element which is usually present. This low moral state of some City College publications Is not a recent development. However the ridicule of religion seems to be the latest angle. "The Campus'' of March 31, 1933 (called the and the "Clionian" of Jenuary.

The Violent Overthrow of American Democracy Dear Sir: trader the caption Reds Cheer Defense of Ger-Bon," to The Times of; the 22d instant, appears the statement: "Mr. Browder emphatically denied that the Communist" sought the violent overthrow of American democracy. It has-been well said that it Is extremely difficult to find- consistency in Communism attitude toward anything. There is scarcely a term in its marvelous vocabulary that has a univocal meaning. This is not normal for the technical economics and philosophy that it professes to uphold.

Its unavowed immoral principle is that all is commendable that furthers the objectives of the Party. Communists for instance, plead fervidly, and in the one breath: "We are for American" democracy we are out to preserve what is left of it as we make It over Into a new brand." Upon some sucli premise, artfully emitted, the Communist agitator goes on to Justify the Revolution proclaimed for and to the world by Marx and Engels. Sophistry or sub-. terfuge of the kind Kf-precisely what -Browder emphasizes as he insists that the Communist party is not at all set for the overthrow of American democracy.) Before accepting Browder seriously, and to enable us to get acquainted with this mental juggling and stuttering, we have a right to ask what he mean In" nil Moscow speech, July 27, 1935 when he stated, that Communism has only one end, one purpose, vt4, a clearly revolutionary path" If Browder is for democracy, what does he mean in his first book, page 155, by writing of "revolution" and why does he speak of it as! Why, if he and party are for dem oeraey. is he: laboring feverishly night and day to eliminate all but one political party? Why must there be but one party? DANIEL J. DRISCOLL, JR. Manhattan, February 24. Love of Principle Versus Expediency Dear Sir: I wish to take issue with Mr. Cunningham.

He charges that the Catholic Press, particularly THE TABLET, preaches hatred of the President. Strange, only dur ing the past week. read the charge that, the President was one the pest haters in Washington, and It was his erstwhile friend, Oen. Hugh Johnson, who said it. Did you ever hear of a person being elevated to a high position for the purpose of stilling their criticism? Our late Mayor, John F.

Jlylan was thus kicked up the lad der, to stop his opposition to Jlm- mie's Campaign for re-election. He was appointed to a Judgeship in fthe Children's Court. That quieted him. Why should Mr. Kennedy be treated such? In my opinion, this Administration winks at Communism.

You have read the various speeches of Secretary Ickea. Robert T. Jackson and others. They always denounce Fascism. Why are they silent about Communism? Again, read the testimony of Secretary Perkins on Bridges, the Communist on the West Coast.

She doesn't think he should be deported, but Mr. Kennedy does. He's aware of this Communistic menace and Is outspoken about it. That doesn't make for harmony in the Administration, so it's easier to ship Mr. Kennedy to England, where Vie won't be so critical of the Reds in our shipping circles.

Hence he was literally. KICKED UP THE LADDER. Ostensibly, it looks like a promotion, but was It? Mexico is much nearer. That was the place for a Catholic, to replace the Red sympathizer, Daniels. 1T.crc an opening on the Supreme Court Bench.

What an opportunity for the President to make amends for his appointment of BLACK. That would be too much for to give to a representative of one-fifth cf the population. We take these politicians too much on FAITH. We neglect to see the crowd in the backgmund. and we are paying for our mistakes.

Look at Gerson in New York City. No apology from Borough President Isaacs, only defiance. Did you notice how the President sidetracked the Black incident. No apology from him, either. Only a speech that took interest off Blwrk.

If we'd only heed our Cathoiic Press when it shows up the subtle artifices these Politicians use to assuage our resentment, we wouldn't be treated as a political joke uxiay. The Jews are heeded, txjeause they bring their resentment to the polls. Let us stand together and do likewise. Only then, will this discrimination against us be stopped. A CHRISTIAN. Brooklyn, March 1. "Muddled Thinking" of A.C.T.U.

Attacked Dear sir: Beat this if you can for muddled thinking. At the meeting of the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists last Friday night in New York City, the mass lay-offs by Consolidated Edison Company was condemned and protest meetings were discussed and approved. Certain Catholic institutions, particularly a well-known University, were excoriated for the wages paid to the workers employed there and a committee was appointed to Investigate the conditions and to organize the workers. The Hague dictator ship in Jersay City was then taken up and a fund was opened to raise enough money to pay the expenses of public protest meetings and the distribution of A proposal was then put forward to protest the appointment of Simon Gerson, the communist, as assistant to the Borough President of Manhattan but this was voted down. Make no mistake this wtts not communist meeting.

It was meeting of CATHOLIC "Trade Unionists. Here are the details. On Sunday, Feb. 2nd, as a mem ber of the executive committee, raised the question of the appoint mcnt by the Manhattan Borough President, Mr. Stanley Isaacs, of Mr.

Simon Gson. an active mem ber of the communist party and an enemy of God. America, free trade unionism, and democracy. I asked the committee to endorse my proposition, protesting through resolutions, meetings, leaflets, and picketing, (our regular technique) and to put it before the meeting on Friday evening for ratification The committee refused on the fol lowing grounds: that the Commu nist Party la legally recognized, and that we don't want lo be red-bait ers or lined up with the Veterans Father Curran and other reaction aries." Even Msgr. Fulton Sheen was condemned for red-baiting.

At the membership meeting on Friday, Feb. 25th, these arguments were aug mented. I will deal with them all in detail. 1. "The Communist Party Is a legally recognized party in the United States." The Catholics who used this argument were fully aware that Communism is more than a political party.

It is a philosophy of life that alms to destroy the Church, and Gerson personifies Communism. 2. "We dont want to be red-bait ers." But these same member? de light in being capitalist-baiters. Fascist baiters, Hague baiters in New Jersey, and even Catholic-bait ers. Are the Reds sacrosanct? 3.

"We don't want to be lined up the Veterans, Father Curran, and other reactionaries." Does this mean that to be anti-Communist is to be anti-Labor? Or are we to conclude that the enemies of God, country, free trade unionism, and democracy constitute progress? 4. "Monsignor Sheen should confine, himself to positive It Is an open secret that Pope Pius XI appointed Monsignor Sheen to fight Communism. Jewish religion, be it remembered. Is opposed to Christianity in general, to the Catholic Church in particular." This bold and sensational statement was made by Mr. Moissaye J. Olgln, Managing Editor of the Yiddish dally newspaper, "Morning Freiheit," New York City. In an editorial of January 10, 1937.

The "Freiheit" circulation Is about 50,000. In this featured editorial, Mr. Olgln exposes a hypocritical rabbi for having "prayed" to "the Jewish God" to spare the "ChrlsUa- Pope for greater service to religion and humanity. The editor states that "According a uie oesi juagmem oi jewisn re- 1 1 ligloua people, he (Rabbi l6senran) commuted a Diaspnemy ana in- suited the sensibilities cf those re- liglous Jews who never had made peace with the Pope." i v. v.

He answers the questions with this explanation: "This common ground was a denunciation of Communism." Mr.eO'.gln makes It clear that "if a Jewish representative gets up and denounces Communism, he sacrifices I the interests ot Uie living Jewish people to the Interests of religion." Assuming to speak for his readers and calling upon the Jewish community of St. Louis to "ostracize'' this Rabbi for "his really damaging performances" and "a betrayal cf the Interests of the Jews" for denouncing Communism and praying for Uie Christian Pope; the "Morning Freiheit" managtag editor declared: "If there is one country In which the Jews look hopefully towards Uie future, in which they can expand and build up their own state, it is in the country where society Is marching towards the Communist system." 1 GEORGE ANDERSON.

To prove this is not arduous task. We have only to cast a quick glance at Europe. Did not a mere million Commurists overthrow sue- cessfully the Russian republican gov- err.ment under the Kerensky regime? And did not Uie Fascists in Italy and the Nationalist Socialists (Nazis) in Germany gain control of their respective governments when these countries were faced with economic chaos and when their citizens were caught in a maelstrom of Isms?
