KLEIN Handwerlier Greets 'Turkey Trot' Winners Coney Island is the most populated all-year resort area in the nationand yet its streets are as empty as those of any two-bit hamlet in the midwest. What are the reasons for our community's desolate appearance, both day and night? Some blame the situation on the "element" one finds in Coney Island, whatever that means. Others couple this with the lack of police protection to guard us from this undesirable "element." It is certainly true that Coney Island has its share of proverty and crime, vandalism and destruction. It is also true that we have more than an average share of substantial, civic-minded, community-conscious, 'middle class citizens, and it is those individuals who must strive to return Coney Island to the place of prominence and distinction that it has enjoyed for so long. Our people are afraid to walk the streets, especially at night.

They are fearful of attack, and perhaps they have a right to be fearful. Many citizens complain that the police are not giving adequate protection, and that there are not enough policemen on duty to properly patrol the area. The Police Department argues that they have enough men to handle the situation, and that they are doing the best job possible. We can not fully agree with this. While we frequently see prowl cars cruising the streets, there seems to be a drastic lack of foot patrolmen on duty.

The 'cop on the beat' is still the private citizens' best 'friend, and we urge the Department to get us more men for foot duty. On the other hand, it is each person's duty to cooperate fully with the Police Department in the identification and apprehension of any law-breakers. Too many crimes go unsolved because of fear or lack of cooperation on the part of the victims of these crimes. Many people are afraid of retribution from the criminal, and thus fail to report a crime to the authorities, or are too afraid to identify the criminal once he is caught for fear of "the thug's 'getting even' with him 'later.

We must overcome this fear if we are to expect the police to protect our person and property. We must cooperate fully in any way that we can with the authorities if Coney Island is indeed to be rid of its undesirable "element." partment of Parks.
