During high tide the flounders seem to scatter and move into shallower waters, while low water finds them lying in the channels and holes. When you hook too many, throw back the small ones because they have little meat and are better conserved for the future. Flounders may not be game-fish, but their sweet flavor makes better eating than most salt-water fish. Gene Mulligan sent us a statement issued by the Assembly's Standing Committee on Conservation on the subject of Striped Bass legislation.

One of the main points in the conflict was, as the Committee pointed out, "the presently proposed legislation seeks to go all the way in reserving this fishing opportunity for hook and line fishermen, to the complete exclusion of those who for many years have taken this species with commercial gear for food purposes." The odd part is that the bills do not stop the commercial men from fishing with hook and line. In fact, that is how these same men catch bluefish for market. N. Y. About the beginning of May, the pollack make their trip from Block Island and feed in the Rip just off the tip of Montauk. There are plenty of bait fish for them to feed on, near the top too. The pollack are one of the fastest fish when caught via trolling, and you don't know what fishing is until you hook one of them and feel that pumping, surging motion.

For our money, they provide more fight than the Stripers. Tony Stephan and Charles Abel made their regular Sunday trip to Sheepshead Bay and got there just in time to catch the Pilot II.
