B2 The Daily News Longview Wash Monday December 28 198 1 Williams: Tough budget battles ahead Obituaries going to be a tough he predicted Williams said he is putting together a package of options for cutting state spending He does not want further cuts in education and social programs however At a press conference last Thursday Spellman criticized letter to the agency heads who work under Spellman Williams should have made the request for budget information through the office Spellman said a matter of protocol and said Spellman aide Kate Heimbach Ms Heimbach said the governor probably will allow the agency officials to respond to letter however Williams said he made a similar request to agency officials this summer in anticipation of the special session But then he asked them what the effect of a 10 percent cut would be budget cutbacks The recently completed special legislative session cut 1 percent to 10 percent from the budget depending on the agency Williams chairman of the House Appropriations-General Govern--ment committee says the state must make further budget cuts He says state spending levels in 1982-83 are 18 percent higher than during the previous two-year period In preparation for the regular session that starts in January Williams has written to the heads of state agencies asking how their offices would be affected by additional 5 percent budget cuts want to go cutting Williams said adding he expect the Legislature to adopt a 5 percent across-the-board cut in all agencies you cut across-the-board and you increase taxes going to have to cut selectively It into the Christmas Eve shooting death of a 31-year-old Longview man showed that the victim committed suicide Coroner DF Winebrenner said today The victim Jerry Wesley McVey of 3050 Maryland St was at a party in an apartment at 1010 Douglas St when he walked into a bathroom closed the door and shot himself in the head Winebrenner said Winebrenner said family members said McVey had not appeared depressed and that they had no idea why he took his life Accident victim stable A 29-year-old Silver Lake man was listed in serious but stable condition this morning at St Hospital where he was
