The Daily News Thursday July 13 1972 Section 2 Page 19 Kelso gets Ruth tourney National League All-Stars will host the District Seven Babe Ruth baseball tournament here next week Tuesday through Sunday with 10 teams battling for the title at Tam O'Shanter Park Included in the tournament will be the Kelso American League All-Stars and all-star squads from American and National Leagues Castle Roek-Toutle Lake Vancouver Metro Vancouver Heights Camas-Wash-ougal Mid-County and Hazel Dell All the action will take place on the Babe Ruth diamond at Tam O'Shanter with four games slated to kick off the action In the tournament opener the Longview Nationals will battle Vancouver Metro at 1 pm Tuesday with Nationals taking on Vancouver Heights at 3 pm Later in the evening Castle Rock-Toutle Lake will scrap with Camas-Washougal at 6 pm with Longview American battling Mid-County in the nightcap at 8 pm Americans and Hazel Dell drew first-round byes and will go into action Wednesday night Tournament Director is Ada Belle Davis Officers and board members of Kelso Babe Ruth expressed thanks to parents and fans who contributed to purchase new warm-up jackets for the two all-star teams A was reported threatening to break ott his world championship chess match with Boris Spassky unless all movie cameras are removed from the playing hall quite serious He may not play at said a member ot challenger lost the first game Wednesday night Fischer staged a 30-minute walkout shortly after the play began Wednesday complaining that a movie camera 150 feet away was making him nervous The camera was hardly visible in the dimness outside the lighted circle and it could not be heard by Fischer but aides said the knowledge ot its presence unnerved him Chief referee Lothar Schmid of West Germany who makes the decisions on all contested points in connection with the match told Fischer during his walkout there was nothing he could do about the camera Film and television rights for the match have been sold to an American promoter and Fischer and Spassky are to get a share of the proceeds estimated at a minimum of $27500 each up to Lothar Schmid whether Bobby plays" one of Fischer's Wednesday evening with a pair of thrilling games and a surprise dedication The tournament opened with director Kim Henry dedicating the affair to long-time Shamrocks manager player coach and sponsor Jerry Bergquist who tossed out the first ball to Standard Dairy's Paul Elam all it took to start the annual battle In the opening game Standard Cheesemakers dropped a 13-inning affair to Porter Scarpelli of Portland 4-3 with the Vancouver Kings coming on to take the nightcap 5-0 over Log Cabin Tavern on veteran Jack no-hitter action finds Office Tavern taking on Portland Pay Pak in the opener at 7 pm on the YMCA diamond In the second game Pizza of Bremerton takes on the Olympia Senators with Shamrocks facing the Vancouver Three Monkies in the nightcap at 10 pm In opener Porter Scarpelli broke a scoreless string of 10 innings to overcome a Cheesemaker 3-2 lead and pull off the victory Going into the top of the 13th inning tied at 2-2 the Cheesemakers snapped the dead- Professionat archers set tournament here The Professional Archers of Washington will host the Washington State Target Championships here Saturday and Sunday at Mint Valley School The tournament will begin Saturday morning at 9 a and will pick up Sunday for the finals beginning at 9 a lock when centerfielder Larry Kessin-ger ripped a triple to right center Pitcher Steve Shumway helped his own cause with a line single to right to plate Kessinger but was thrown out trying for second base The Cheesemakers took their 3-2 lead into the bottom of the inning but Shumway promptly walked leadoff batter Jerry O'Shaunessy After one out Stan Schmidt laced a triple into right center to plate the tying run A pair of walks one intentional loaded the bases before left fielder Jack Schafle rifled a single to center to score the winning run Standard Dick Oxford ripped a solo home run in the fourth inning In the nightcap Hutchison was in charge all the way allowing only two base runners in the contest Both reached on infield errors and never got as far as second base The Kings ripped Lacey starter Ber-nie Keller for a solo home run by Carl Easter in the first and four runs in the second for all the scoring action went on to fan 11 Lacey batters while walking none He added to the scoring by ripping a two-run double in the second inning off of reliever Howard Sommers The Cheesemakers drop into the bracker in the double elimination tourney and will meet the Lacey squad Saturday morning at 8:30 a at field No 1 in Tam O'Shanter Park The Kings and the Porter Scarpelli team will battle Saturday at 8:30 a on the YMCA field in a bracket game Stan Sparks long-time ace of the- Shamrocks pitching corps goes after victory No 500 in nightcap Longview City final team to make an appearance will be Pietro's which will take on Portland's Artistic Trophies Friday night at 7 pm rights Chester Fox said he was up all night with second the Rev William Lombardy and Fred Cramer of the Chess
