Highway 101, Leucadia Tickets: $10 Information: 4364030 is fantastic. Still, he says its nice to see that folk music has some kind of continuity', even if its in electric form. The mystique of music and creation wras enough to spur Gillette to write his own book, Songwriting and the Creative Process, published in 1995 by the Sing Out Press.

He discusses all kinds of music in the book including rap, which left him on shaky ground, he said. I had to read a lot about it and was not able to speak with authority about it, he said. But I had to address it. His conclusion was that rap audiences want on-the-edge, content-oriented music, but fears it may have gone too far by exploiting violence and disrespect toward women. But he chalked that up to the sensationalism that often plagues anything that becomes popular, and worries when the sensational side pushes aside the good stuff.

Gillette has been married since 1989 to Mangsen, well-known in folk circles for her warm voice and performance of ballads. Mangsens material also includes songs by contemporary writers and originals, and shes the one who plays the concertina. Coming to California gives Gillette a chance to visit his father and siblings, all of whom still live in California. Living in Bennington is great, because theres more of a folk scene there, but he still looks forward to California in the springtime. Part of the motive is to get away from winter back there, he said with a chuckle.

Gillette, author of folk classics Darcy Farrow, Back on the Street Again and Bed of Roses, performs with his wife, Cindy Mangsen, at 7:30 m.

today at Traditional Music in Leu-cadia. A native of Orange County who now lives in tiny Bennington, Gillette began making a living as a singersongwriter in 1964, when he was 22. Those were the days when the Trouba-dor in Los Angeles was a renowned folk club, and so was the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, where Gillette often played. But while folk artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Ron-stadt and James Taylor rode the wave of fame and fortune in the music business, Gillette percolated under the surface and thats been just fine with him. I prefer music not supported by the music industry, he said from San Simeon, where he was staying before playing a show in San Luis Obispo on Thursday night.

Thats the choice I made, he said. Its not that I havent tried to succeed. Were self-sufficient. We have 7,000 people on our mailing list, and people come to see us regardless of whether we have a hit or not. We arent sustained by a corporation, management or other entity.

We are kind of a strange beast Every sear, Gillette and Mangsen hop into their 19 Mada 626, with 279.000 miles on it, and travel between 4,200 and 4.100 miles, plaving in small venues Thev do the whole she- ry ri'Hii WM SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT 3 tv But Gillette doesnt see that translating into a new folk wave. Its always a little deceptive to look at the music charts and see it in terms of supporting folk music, he said. Some artists fit in the Top 40 format, but you dont want to leave behind everything folk music represents to fit through the keyhole of the music industry. Gillette is such a purist that he winced when he saw Chapman playing electric guitar on the recent Grammy Awards show even though he thinks her voice bang together driving, writing, arranging, booking shows and arranging for transportation. Their little car is packed with musical instruments a concertina, guitars, banjo and fiddle plus a cooler packed with granola, a laptop computer so they can check e-mail and their Web site, and lots of books.

Its not the glamorous life, but its a full life, and from the enthusiasm evident in Gillettes voice, its a wonderful life. If you do (music) long enough, you get the freedom to do the things you care about, he said. It means letting go of thmgs that were attracnve in the past, and there are compromises vou don't have to make. There was something of a icsuigence in folk music a few veals ago. with the success of singeisongvuiteis like Iracv Chapman and Michelle Shocked S-Sc wri.
