11 Detroit at CHARGERS, 6 p.m. Ilarbaughs performance? Harbaugh had but two interceptions coming into the game; he threw all of five last season. But in the games opening 16 minutes, the Chargers picked him off four times. Never mind what Mike Ditka might think of Ilarbaugh. Hes A-OK in the Chargers book.

Sunday, he was more Captain Turnover than Captain Comeback. I got real sloppy with the foot-i ball, Harbaugh said. But he had some help. The Chargers harassed, chased and bothered Harbaugh on nearly every play. They blitzed linebackers, cor-l nerbacks, and safeties.

They employed man blitzes and zone blitzes. Everybody this side of owner Alex Spanos was pointed toward the Colts backfield. Our pass rushing was very good, Ross said. I think it was the key factor to the ballgame. The Chargers collected a season-high six sacks, with Seau back after missing last week with a knee injury setting the pace with two.

When they werent dragging Harbaugh down, the Chargers were hurrying him into throws he didnt want to make. They really play hard, every one of those guys, defensive coordinator Dave Adolph said. You saw (Harbaugh) running all over the place. They chased him 'around and all of them really laid lit out Seau wanted some praise laid on Adolph. Ive got to credit Adolph and the scheme in which he brought, Seau said.

It was a mixture of man and zone blitzes and it caused a lot of problems. We kept them off balance, took the run away from them (91 yards) and turned them into a one-dimensional team. What dimension the game officials were in remains a mystery. On an afternoon in which some wacky calls were made, the Chargers somehow came out on top. Never mind they were flagged for a whopping 15 penalties, the most in team history.

Never mind they welcomed one penalty, when referee Howard Roe took two points away from the Colts when wiping out an safety. Instead, after much delay, he called quarterback Sean Salisbury for an illegal forward pass to left tackle Vaughn Parker. Salisbury, about to be tackled in the end zone by linebacker Trev Alberts, slipped the ball to Parker. The 6-foot-3, 296-pound Parker rumbled a few yards before going down with a thud that threatened the domes teflon roof. I gave them a burst of slow, -Parker said, laughing.

Salisbury, filling in again for Stan Humphries (shoulder), gave the Chargers a dose of consistency. Unlike last Sunday in Seattle, Salisbury played with as much smarts as talent He tossed touchdown passes to Charlie Jones and Tony Martin, hitting 19 of 31 attempts for 237 yards and no interceptions. I looked at the game last week (four interceptions) and talked about the stupid things I did, said Salisbury, who now has a 6-6 record as a starter. Today the plan was to be effective on offense without turning the ball over. Salisbury struck early, hitting Jones on a 41-yard scoring pass to the Chargers opening drive and convert Kurt Gouveias inter -ception into seven points.

Jones, the Chargers fourth-rround draft pick, beat comerback lEugene Daniel to the ball, then Jason Belser to the end zone. After that, it became a kick-ifest: John Carney booted two field "goals, and then the Colts Cary Blanchard hit two. Then Carney hit two more and Blanchard kicked two more. When the carpet dust settled, the Chargers were clinging to a 19-12 cushion heading into the fourth quarter. We knew they were going to make a run for it, said Seau, referring to the resilient Colts.

But Salisbury gave the Chargers some breathing room early in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown toss to Tony Martin. The Chargers defense made it stand up. Although it had to survive the Colts having possession on 10 plays in the red zone. The killer for die Colts was when Marshall Faulks 1-yard touchdown run was nullified because backup tight end Marcus Pollard was called for holding. The character of this team is good, defensive end Chris Mims said.

We could have just kicked back and let them score, but we didnt." We were in a do-or-die situation, said Shawn Lee, who earlier had an interception. We knew we had to come thrcjigh. Carolina quarterback Kerry Collin reinjured his left knee when he was hit from behind by Atlanta's Chuck Smith early in the third quarter of a 20-17 loss to the Falcons. The second-year quarterback remained on tbe turf for several minutes before he finally hobbled off. The former Penn State star strained tbe same medial collateral ligament that was hurt earlier in the year, causing him to miss one game and parts of two others. His status for next Sunday's game against the Giants won't be known until later. Smith was called for a personal foul, and Collins blasted the defensive end as a cheap shot specialist.

You saw what he did, the fuming quarterback said. He's trying to end people's careers. There's no room for it. Its cheap, cheap, cheap. Pittsburgh QB Mike Tomczak suffered a mild concussion against St.

Louis and was lifted for precautionary reasons. He could have returned, but. with a safe lead, the Steelers went with Jim Miller. Phoenix QB Kent Graham tore a ligament in his left knee in the Cardi-nals-Giants game one series after ff rr. followed with a 1-yard touchdown run.

GIANTS 16, CARDINALS 8 At East Rutherford, With Dave Brown and Kent Graham sidelined early in an Injury-tilled game, the New Mwk-Arizona game still finished with an interesting quarterback showdown rookie Danny Kanell against veteran Boomer Esiason. The kid from Flonda State and the Giants defense prevailed as Kanell threw a 24-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Jesse Campbell had interceptions to set up two of Brad Daluiso's three field goals. Injuries were as much the story as the score. The Giants (4-5) lost tight end Aaron Pierce to a knee Injury on their opening series, and Brown went down with back spasms after being sacked on the next possession. The Cardinals (3-5) lost Graham with a knee injury following a handoff In the final two minutes of the quarter.

His backup, Ryan Wetnight, will likely miss four weeks after tearing a ligament in his right knee. Baltimore defensive end Mike Frederick reinjured his neck in the first quarter and did not return against Cincinnati, and Ravens cornerback Antonio Langham left after pulling a hamstring in the third quarter. Five Seahawks were injured in Seattles 23-16 victory over Houston. Wide receiver Brian Blades separated his left shoulder, running back Chris Warren hurt an ankle, fullback Mack Strong sustained a knee injury, linebacker Michael Barber suffered a pulled hamstring and tight end Christian Fauria suffered a rotator-cuff injury.

Associated Press John Lynch, right, and Warren Sapp. diagnosed with a concussion and was taken to a hospital for further examination. FALCONS 20, PANTHERS 17 At Atlanta: The last winless team in the NFL finally got into the victory column. Jamal Anderson rushed for a career-high 109 yards, the maligned Atlanta defense shut down Carolina after Kerry Collins went out with an injured knee and the Falcons posted their first victory of the season. Atlanta (1-6) avoided the worst start in team history, an 0-9 beginning by the expansion Falcons in 1966.

The Panthers routed Atlanta 290 in the season opener to begin the Falcons' slide and mark Carolina as a possible playoff contender. The Panthers (5-4), however, have lost four of their last six games all on the rood. After a scoreless third period, Atlanta sealed the victory with 13:41 remaining when Bobby Hebert threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Birden, who took a screen behind the line of scrimmage, found a wall of blockers and soared over a defender to reach the endzyie. Jets Todays Game Denver at Oakland, 6 p.m. As usual, Associated Press As usual, Jerry Rice did exactly what was needed to win the game. He also got exactly what he needed to become the first player with 1,000 career receptions Sunday night. Rice caught a 36-yard touchdown pass, set up another San Francisco TD with his milestone catch and recovered an onside kick that sealed a 24-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints. LllI.ilMnLZZZI What can I say about him? said 49ers offensive lineman Chris Dalman.

Hes the best? Therell never be another one like him? Thank God hes on our team? Theyre all cliches, but theyre all true when you talk about Jerry. Rice needed three receptions to reach the 1,000 mark, and thats exactly what he got. He reached the milestone when he grabbed a 9-yard pass from Steve Young with 11:47 left, but he still wasnY satisfied. That was the first ball I caught in the second half, he said. The officials at first signaled touchdown when Rice caught the ball.

It would have been his second score of the night, but the ball was marked at the 2-yard line. Young sneaked in on the next play to put the 49ers (7-2) up 24-14 with 11:31 remaining. I think we did a pretty good job of containing Jerry, holding him to three passes, cornerback Eric Allen said. It just shows you how much he can hurt you on three passes. New Orleans (2-7) got a field goal to get within seven with 2:16 left, and after Rice recovered the onside kick, the Saints held and got the ball back with a minute left.

Playing with a broken thumb that will be surgically repaired today, Cox led an inspired defense as Chicago held on for the victory. The Bears (4-5), who tned to talk Cox into having surgery last week, didn't want him to go back into the game with about six minutes left. Cox even got into a brief sideline shoving match with trainer Fred Caito before getting his way and going back onto the field. Cam and Smith were involved in a strange play to set up the game's final points as Chicago defeated the Bucs for the 16th time In 18 meetings at Soldier Field. Tampa Bay (1-8) was ahead 106 when Errict Rhett in his second game after a long and unsuccessful contract holdout was hit by Cam and fumbled at Chicago's 47-yard line.

Players for both teams stood around momentarily but no whistles blew to officially stop the play. Smith then scooped up the football and rambled 34 yards to Tampa's 19. Donnie Abraham was called for Interfering with Curtis Conway in the end zone on next play, and Raymont Harns.
