Foe 14 Loxgvtew Daily News Thursday, Nov. 7. 1963 like a tunnel, you might say." Exactly like a tunnel, to be precise. The Beverly Hills Improvement Association wants this cut-and cover freeway tunneled through the business part of the city, from which neither fume nor commuter could presumably escape. "There's no question but what a freeway is needed," said Miss Russell.

"But they would not have to have offramps. It would only go through Beverly Hills for a mile and a quarter. People could get off before Beverly or afterward. That way Beverly Hills, could be left intact." The exact route through Beverly Hills won't be selected until perhaps January, and the freeway itself probably won't be built for 10 years. "In a recent survey, 89 of 92 students polled said that they found instruction supplemented by closed-circuit television is superior in many ways to ordinary instruction," Professor Hammer reported. Dr. George C. Buck, associate professor of Germanics, is in charge of the closed-circuit television course in elementary German, assisted by linguistics and Germanics instructors. "The objective of the Germanics course is to determine whether the instruction of language is as applicable to television as that of certain aspects of medicine, science and engineering," Professor Buck said.

This is the second phase of a two-year pilot project initiated in 1962.

Walter L. Dunn, associate professor of General Engineering, is coordinator of the project. In the first phase, a freshman engineering course was presented in a single studio-classroom in the General Engineering Building. An overhead TV camera looked over the shoulder of the professor as he lectured and four monitor sets in various parts of the room provided close visibility of illustrative material for the students. In the current phase, which includes instruction in both general engineering and elementary German, lectures delivered in the studio-classroom are also being transmitted by closed-circuit television sets in three other classrooms in the building.

But the students in the other rooms are not left to fend for themselves. Each outside room has an instructor or assistant professor to help students and an intercom system enables students to ask questions of the lecturer. If the experimental program in engineering and German proves effective, it may be expanded to other academic areas. While television assisted instruction is not designed to replace personal contact between professor and student, in some instances it may be possible to expose a larger number of students to superior teachers through the use of closed circuit television. The instructional procedure is generally the same for both the engineering and the German courses.

During the first half of the class period, lectures are transmitted from the studio-classroom to other classrooms. Instructors in each room work individually with students during the second half of the period. Both the students and faculty members participating in the first phase of the project completed it with enthusiasm, according to Professor Vernon whicn happenea recenuy io West Los Angeles.
