Deluxe to play Anaconda stars DeLuxe-Rainer, district champions of fast pitch softball here the past half-dozen years, will travel to Anaconda Friday evening to challenge a team of all-stars from the Smelter City. The Butte club downed the Dillon Merchants Sunday night at Clark Park, VO, behind the 12-strikeout hurling of veteran Bill Roberts, who allowed two hits. Dillon's right-hander, Jack Howard, permitted but one hit, but misplays behind him cost the decision as DeLuxe scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth and then held on.

Butte thus qualified to go to Great Falls for the state championship tournament the weekend of Aug. 19-21. Daly Bank is Anaconda's district champion. Several Daly players will be in the Anaconda All-Star lineup Friday night at 8 o'clock under the lights in Washoe Park over there. DeLuxe-Rainier won the state title in 1964 in Anaconda.

Angels become first AL team to top million in attendance ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)-The California Angels, playing in the smallest city hi the majors, have become the first American League club to top a million in attendance this season. Playing their first year in the plush Anaheim Stadium, the Angels have caught fire both at the boxoffice and on the field.

President Robert 0. Reynolds expected a good start because of the novelty of big league baseball hereabouts. But the fan turnout exceeded expectations. And the team is third in the standings. Reynolds now hopes for at least 1.5 million for the season.

Last year, sharing the stadium of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club drew but 566,727. The three-level Angel stadium seats 43,204 and Tuesday night's crowd of 25,465 raised the season total to 1,001,074. "Thanks a million," was flashed on the 230-foot-high message board. Then came a barrage of firecrackers. The long hot, humid weather, which has plagued this region most of the summer making the greens dry and hard to hold, is not likely to create many problems, according to most of the players. Lakewood is not long as courses with a par is all adds up to a bushel of birdies for the field of 144 torid professionals and as they begin 72 holes of play with the final round on Sunday. But the course is not without its challenges.

For instance No. 9, a water hole, is only 135-yards long. Much of the distance, however, is over water and already in practice rounds some pros sagely agree it lives up to its name "Hazard Lake." The narrow, tree-'ined fairways are also expected to claim then- share of casualties. "You must hit good shots on every hole to be rewarded," warns Lakewood head professional Jerry Boyidn. "There are no give-aways." Most experts, though, say the pron will tear the course apart, predicting 13 and possibly 16 under par will win the championship.

Strong field The field certainly appears to be one of the strongest this year. Seemingly stronger than the U.S. Open, the Masters, and the PGA, all the name stars highly-touted young players on the professional tour, most of whom did not compete in the big three because of qualification restrictions. Among those competing for the $25,000 first money are defending champion Dan Sikes, Al Geiberger, who captured the PGA championship in Akron, 0. two weeks ago, U.S.
