Pascuma rode hie second winner of the atternoon when he sent Miss Maryland past the judges a length to the good in the fifth race.

He adopted rougn tactics with the filly on the turn out of the backstretch and all out put Blue Darter, which was racing Ourd head and head with Bunny-kins, and Billy W. over the fence. By that trick Miss Maryland gained a big advantage and thus was able to land the purse. She was heavily backed all over the country. So much money was placed on her at different points that some of it was sent back iiy telegraph to be placed at the track.

And thus it was. that her odds were forced down from 6 to 1 to 9 to 2. Mars Cassidy, the starter, failed to arrive in time to dispateh the horses in the first race and his son, George, acted in his behalf. Whether the young man lost his balance and thus pressed the button that released the barrier one may never know. Momentarily the Blue and White held, but finally Driscoll cut through left tackle for a touchdown. Yosco kicked the extra point. In the last quarter the Red and White kept up a consistent assault on the Tech line. In the waning moments of the game Bob Yosco broke away for a 58-yard run around right But the yells of delight or his oacK-ers had scarcely floated on the cold winds that whistled through the grandstand when Arcturus made another challenge and moved up to Excalibur, the pacemaker.

This pair raced away from Wee Burn an ddashed into the homestretch tatrether. Arcturus was a half length to the good at the furlong pole, but Excalibur wasn't beaten yet Tommy Murphy had him up to the notch of bis physical condition. Moreover, he's a little glutton for punishment the kind you can kill but you can't conquer. Rascuma called upon Excalibur for another rally. The son of Touch Me Not responded and he gained inch by inch on Arcturus.

With minhty bounds they approached the judges. Would Excalibur turn the tables ou Arcturus. the leader? Both Jockeys were riding desperately. Their mounts were responding with the courage of Airedales. The air was surcharged with excitement.

With yells and shouts the horses passed the winning post with the nostrils cf Arcturus in front of those of Excalibur. Justice F. Makes A Good Come-back. Another gallant thoroughbred showed his mettle in the race for the Putnam Handicap, one mile and 70 yards. This was Justice winner of the New Orleans Handicap, worth $50,000 last winter.

He also was the winter favorite for the Coffroth Handicap, the richest race of its kind in the world. And to carry on" that prize at the Tia Juana track across the border from San Justice F. made the trip from the Crescent City after he won the big prise at the Fair Grounds track. But his triD was in vain. On March 14 he started in a race in order to urermre for the Coffroth Handicap later.

And then he met his fate tor the time being, Sun God 2d and Cantankerous, two horses that can't make Ji'stire F. sweat when he's good, easily beat him. This alter he had Id unt'l well into the stretch. He hobbled home on three les. The bheath that ho'ds his tendons bsd given way and he was a crinole.

He did not go to the post for the Coffroth. The Firing Irons Drastic But Effective. Since then Justice F. has been on the shelf for repairs. The firing iron-j were applied to his legs.

Under this treatment, drastic but effective, the tendons drew up and became taut. His legs approached something like what they were before his mishap. And taking advantage of his improvement H. C. Riddle, his trainer, prepared him slowly for the race of yesterday.
