ASTORIA BYKATIE NELSON DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER GET A LOAD of NASA's newest star: the James Webb Space Telescope. A full-scale model of what will be the world's most powerful spacescope is on display in Battery Park as partofthe 2010 World Science Festival. The monster machine will let us mere Earthlings peer further and farther back in time and space than ever before, scientists said yesterday. It also will help the eggheads figure out how galaxies form and evolve, and look for oxygen, methane and carbon dioxide in the hunt for new life. "We may be able to finally get an understanding of how galaxies form, how planets form, how stars form, in detail," said Brian Green, a Columbia University physicist and co-founder of the festival.

"Maybe we'll figure out the dark energy that we've learned is the fusion of the cosmos forcing space to expand. The Webb telescope has been in development for about a decade in anticipation of a 2014 launch date that will send it nearly a million miles into space -four times the distance of our moon for groundbreaking observation. It will fold up like a transformer for that journey, and serve as the next generation of space exploration, said Lori Garver, NASA's deputy administrator. "It is going to be able to see below the clouds and atmospheres and other star clusters and planets that we were not able to do with an optical telescope, so it's really something even beyond the Hubble," she said. The schoolkids on hand were impressed.

"It inspires me because it shows we can create so manytypes of technology," said Karishma Kalloo, an 11 -year-old sixth-grader from Middle School 447 in Brooklyn. knelsonnydailynews.com OFFICE SPACE".
