He called Cantwell a Seattle liberal who liked to raise taxes.

A pro-business group ran ads in Eastern Washington suggesting she was affected by drinking $4 grande lattes. But his appeal to eastern and rural voters couldnt overcome Cantwells support in King, Snohomish and Thurston counties. She beat Gorton by more than 150,000 votes in King, the states most populous county. Cantwells assurance that she, too, would fight dam removal kept her close enough in Spokane ana some farm counties that she apparently has eked out one of the narrowest statewide victories in Washington history. Finishing a distant third, with about 65,000 votes or just over 2.5 percent of the 2.4 million cast, was Libertarian Jeff Jared, a Kirkland attorney.

Jared said his 65,000 votes were due in great part to unhappiness with Gortons stance in favor of some gun-control laws and his reluctance to cut the size and cost of government. But he refused to be cast in a spoilers role. Gortons record is to blame, not me, he said. But apparent margin of victory close enough to require recount By Jim Camden Staff writer With strong support from Seattle and the rest of metropolitan Puget Sound, Democrat Maria Cantwell appears to have ended Slade Gortons U.S. Senate career.

Cantwell finished the statewide ballot count Wednesday just 1,953 votes ahead of Gorton close enough for the secretary of state to order a recount. But the margin is utterly bulletproof, her spokesman Ellis Conklin predicted. Cantwell all but declared victory. I look forward to this challenge and the process that is still yet to take place in the next several weeks, Cantwell said Wednesday. Gorton did not concede, but seemed to be bracing for the narrow loss and described himself as cautiously pessimistic.

We still have a long process ahead of us and at this point, were trying to be optimistic, Gorton spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman said. If Cantwells victory holds up over the next week and recounts rarely change the outcome of elections it will leave the U.S. Senate evenly divided next year unless Democrats win the White House and Sen. Joe Highway 95: State has yet to review study Continued from A1 The Idaho Transportation Department has received the University of Idaho report. But Steve Rich, in the departments Boise Office of Highway Safety, said the findings have yet to be reviewed.

U.S. Highway 95, which covers 538 miles from Oregon to Canada, has been called one of Americas most dangerous highways. It also makes Washington just the third state behind California and Maine to be represented by two women senators.

Cantwell ran a campaign that didnt vary from one part of the state to the other and was propelled through the year with some $10 million from her own bank account. She called for campaign finance reform, saying it was better to spend her own money than to accept donations from political action committees. She also called for expanded health insurance for seniors, tougher environmental rules and budget protection for Social Security. Gorton and his allies waged a more regional campaign. In Eastern Washington, he vowed to fight any effort to remove federal dams along the Snake there were 35 fatalities.

This year there have been 28 fatalities on U.S. Highway 95 statewide. A significant section of the highway stretches from milepost 468 to milepost 471 in Bonner County from just south of the the old highway route to south of Sandpoints Long Bridge the report said. That area has long sweeping corners, heavy congestion, many driveways and truck traffic. The corridor has been designated a high priority of national significance, which allows Idaho to apply for discretionary funds to upgrade and maintain the route.

Most of the highway was posted at 55 mph. When federal restrictions were removed, speed limits were increased to 60 and 65 mph. In most of the dangerous areas, the report points out, slower advisory speed limits are posted.

Idaho State Police officials in Coeur dAlene said they couldnt comment on any recommendations for speed limit changes. That matter is decided by the highway department, not us, Capt. Willis Brownlee said. Thats formally and legally where it belongs. They set the speed limits and we enforce them.
