The most reported rainfall during the night was .77 inch at Beale Air Force Base about 40 miles north of Sacramento followed by .53 at the Alameda Naval Air Station. Subtropical high clouds covered the remainder of the Golden State during the night.

Early morning temperatures at the lower elevations were in the 40s and 50s with a few 30s in the southern deserts. Highs on Thursday were generally in the 50s and 60s over Northern and Central California and the 60s and 70s in Southern California. The warmest reading Thursday was 78 at Ramona, about 30 miles northeast of San Diego. National summary Snow fell again today in the Great Lakes, where wintry, gusty storms blamed for at least two deaths buried western New York state under 20 inches of snow and dumped up to a foot of snow in parts of Michigan. Cold west winds picked up moisture from the warmer waters of the lower Great Lakes today and blew snow across Michigan, northern Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York state, the National Weather Service said.

Travelers advisories were posted for western New York, where up to 6 inches of snow was expected, and for parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, where snow up to 4 inches deep was forecast. Cold temperatures chilled the eastern states, where readings dropped to the 20s and 30s. On Thursday, storms sweeping across Lake Erie dumped heavy snow in western New York southeast of Buffalo. East Aurora was hit with 20 inches, southern Genesee County got 18 inches and 15 inches fell near the Buffalo Bills' Rich Stadium in suburban Orchard Park. "Most of our roads are covered with slush," Orchard Park Police Chief Robert Henning said.

Strong winds accompanying Thursday's storms sent a blinding wall of snow across some roads, but no serious traffic accidents were reported. "A few cars went off into ditches when drivers couldn't see where they were going the usual kind of thing you have a situation like this," New York State Police Sgt. H.D. Perry said. The Lake Erie storms dumped up to 6 inches of snow at Erie, southwest of Buffalo, where snowfall averages 100 inches each winter, said Maryann Hughes of the state police in Erie County.

A near blizzard Thursday left parts of Michigan's western Upper Peninsula buried under 12 inches of snow. The storm was blamed for two traffic deaths in Michigan, one Wednesday night and one Thursday. But the snow was good news in an area hungry for tourist dollars during the ski and snowmobile season. "We're in big snow country, so when you see flakes coming down, it's just like dollar signs to the people," said Betty Rands, a deputy clerk in Gogebic County, Mich. "We really needed this." Elsewhere, gusty rain storms blasted the northern and central Pacific coast, with the rain changing to snow in the higher elevations of the weste mountains and the northern I iateau.

Kidnapping, attempted rape Sheriff's officials are investigating a reported kidnapping and attempted rape which occurred in the Hopland area Thursday. Two female victims, ages 25 and 26, told sheriff's officials they had been abducted by two Mexican male adults in front of the Hopland Superette, according to Lt.

Jay Miller. Miller said the two women claim to have been driven to a rural area of the county where one of the victim's dress was torn in a reported rape attempt. The second victim then fled her captives and was able to escape, according to sheriff's reports. The first victim told sheriff's officials that the two suspects then brandished a gun and conducted an unsuccessful search for the other victim "The (first) victim then became passive and was eventually delivered unharmed to a local Hopland resident who arranged for her safe return home," Miller said. Investigators are now trying to determine the identity of the two suspects who were reportedly driving a 1969 Ford Galaxie, four-door sedan.

The car is olive green in color, with a black vinyl roof.
