Continued from Cl considered her one of the top players on the young team. Twelve teams will compete in Sydney and the Americans are hardly a loclf for one of those spots. I started working out in February, Silvernail said. I felt like working out and the more worked out, the more and more motivated I got. Silvernail also worked out on the court with the Washington State team during the spring season.

After gaining 20 pounds, she said shes 8 pounds away from.her college playing weight. Silvernail, a Spokane native who grew up in Yakima, has lived in Pullman for more than fiv years. She signed a 15-month contract with the USVL and will arrive in Chicago around June 1, Her annual salary will be $30,000. The USVL was founded by Bill Kennedy, a prominent businessman, who is one of Chicagos largest independent builders-jof customized homes. His interest ip volleyball was partly inspired by his daughter, Kelly, a two-time All-American, who played at yi consin.

Kennedy has put up a seven-figure start-up fund. The leagues coaching staff will be headed by Eugenio George trf Cuba and assistant Satoshi MatsU- naga of Japan, both successful coaches on the international level. After the 2000 Olympics, players will be drafted by the USVL to fill out the team rosters. The teams will be located throughout the Midwest. The USVLs plan is to give athletes a professional league during off-Olympic years, much like what the WNBA is to the U-S, National Team in basketball.

Hogenhout, who plays for the University of Washington, knocked in his first goal 8 minutes into the game. The Seattle athlete last year played on the United Soccer Leagues Seattle BigFoot team, which is now the Sounders Select.

Kingsley, who also plays for the Huskies, scored his first goal at the 34-minute mark with Zane Higgins assisting. Three minutes later, Hogenhout scored from 22 yards out for a 3-0 halftime lead. Shadow goalie Brian Mullen wasnt tested much all night, finishing with five saves on 13 shots. The win improved the Shadow to 2-0 and earned them the maximum five points in the U.S. Open Cup qualifying tournament.

With three qualifying games remaining, the Shadow lead the Premier League Northwest Division with seven points. The Sounders fell to 1-1 and have three Cup points. The team with the most points among 11 teams will advance to the second round of the national tournament. The Shadow play the Cascade Surge on Sunday in Salem, Ore. Jazz: Have had their hands full with the Kings Continued from Cl three games went into overtime.

Theyre a tough team, said Russell, They shoot without any hesitation. They are a little reckless. They can cause you a lot of problems. They have a lot of guys, it seems like, who love to play, said Karl Malone. And they dont have a hell of a lot to lose, do they? They can play a lot more relaxed than we can.

No doubt about it. By claiming the franchises third playoff berth since its move from Kansas City to Sacramento in 1985, the Kings already have made their season a surprising success. Theyve added some guys, said Stockton. Some really talented guys. The new-look Kings -acquired forward Chris Webber from Washington, signed free-agent center Vlade Divac and used the No.

7 pick in last summers draft on Florida point guard Jason Williams. Sacramento also signed 1996 first-round pick Predrag Stojako-vic, gave veteran Vernon Maxwell another chance and patiently waited for the development of youngsters Corliss Williamson, Tariq Abdul-Wahad and Lawrence Funderburke. Talent-wise, says Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, theyre about as good as anybody. Sacramento averaged 100.6 points during the season, and averaged 105.3 points in the glove-tight games against the Jazz. Remember, Utah had won 16 of its previous 19 meetings with the Kings, 13 by double-digits.

Talk about a turnaround. Theyve got to be as confident playing us as anybody in the league, Sloan said. Individually, the matchups include Malone-Webber, Russell-Williamson, Stockton-Williams, Greg Ostertag-Divac and Jeff Hornacek-Abdul-Wahad. They have four positions, to' start with, where they can post us up, said Sloan. If we cant handle that, it will make them awfully difficult to play against.

The marque matchups: Malone-Webber and Stockton-Williams. Hes a great player, Malone said. Its always a challenge to someone who scores, rends and helps make their whole team better. Predictably, the 37-year-old Stockton downplayed his battle with Williams, 23. Ive never been concerned with individual matchups, he "Certainly, Ive got to do a rood job because hes an important cog in their offense.

But this is all about beating the Sacramento Kings, not anything else. WIMPS NEED NOT APPLY. The Original Toughman Contest is coming to the Coeur DAlene Casino on May 19th 20th.
