doesn't quite tell it. Alabama was controlling this one through the agonizing last minutes for a homecoming Georgia crowd of more than 30,000. Alabama wanted it, and after Georgia came close on a third-quarter touchdown, the Tide never let that magnificently tremendously vital point be endangered. GEORGIA GOT to the 37 halfway through the last quarter, and needed three yards on 'fourth down to keep moving toward a touchdown that would win it. but it fell short. Fumbles marred the first part of the game, but neither team could take advantage of opposing errors. THE BLUE DEVILS showed no offense, gaining only 66 yards on the ground, while Tech scored twice in the space of seven minutes after failing to capitalize on two early scoring chances. Dukes first mistake carhe when the Blue Devils elected to kick off after winning the toss. Techs sophomores proved that strategy move to be a disastrous one. Lester Simerville. workhorse 175-pound sophomore fullback, kept the 40.000 homecoming fans on their feet as he returned the opening kickoff 31 yards to the 32.

IN EIGHT PLAYS the Jackets had moved it to Dukes 10 with Simerville picking up 29 of those yards. Dukes famed defense finally woke up then and End Bill Thompson blocked Fred Braseltons fourth down field goal attempt from the eight. The Blue Devils, undefeated but tied last week by North Carolina State, had to punt out and the Jackets went goal-ward again. COACH BOBBY DODDS men drove down to the four this time before Eddie Rush-ton intercepted Braselton's third down pass in the end zone. The first period ended 0-0 and the two clubs swapped punts until midway in the second period.

Duke made its only first down of the opening half when the North Carolina team got out to their own 31 after Joe Delany had quick-kicked 42 yards for Tech. But, the Blue Devils could go no farther, punted out and this time Tech was not to be denied. Braselton hit Taz Anderson twice for 10 and eight yards to help get Tech to the Duke 18. At that spot rough, ready Jim Benson, a 210-pound sophomore from Charleston, took charge. BENSON carried the ball five straight times to the Duke seven.
