Among the long catalogue of evils with which society is afflicted, selfish -ness, perhaps, heads the list. Its effects are everywhere to be found. It is not confined to any particular class of persons exclusively. Starting in the lowest strata of society, it reaches out into all the professions of life, cutting its way as it goes, and leaving in its track festering sores to tell its sad story. By selfishness we mean an inordinate regard to self and self interest or happiness, a supreme self love or jelf preference which leads a person to direct his purposes and Fayettcville Wide Awake.

I know people whose word can always be trusted, and who never break a pro -mise, yet who are not through and through sincere. Sincerity ia char acter is like transparency in crystal. It is character without a flaw to hide, with no desire to appear better than it is, and it is not afraid to let itself be open as1 the day, for the day to shine through.

Absolute, rigid, uncompromising principle in all essentials is the rule of the sincere. Courteous consideration, generous self forgetfulness, and kind approbation, is equally the rule of the sincere. I cannot refrain from warning my readers against gushing. Think when you are writing that letter to that beloved friend, whether you mean all you say. Say nothing you do not feel sure you mean Too many ardent intimacies burn themselves out, too many life long friendships grow cold through the fierceness and fervor of the sentiment on which they are built.

They are like fires of chips or brambles, not like deep smouldering furnace heats. "Faithful," says the Holy Book, are the wounds of a friend." It is the kiss of an enemy that is deceitful. But the camp meeting held on the Doub premises was a regularly arranged camp meeting given out in advance to be a camp -meeting, tents were arranged for the occasion, the day set when it would begin and close; and therefore I conclude that it teas the first camp meeting held in North Carolina.

Next as to the question When did Sunday schools begin in North Carolina? Let us go back a little in order to give a probable answer to this inquiry. A joung Methodist woman who afterward married a Methodist preacher, first suggested to Robert Raikes the idea of organizing Sunday Schools in 1781 at Gloucester. Wesley immediately copied the account into hia Arminian Magazine, and was the first man in England to recommend this new institution. In the pame year Fletcher introduced it into his parish In the year 1784, Jive years before any one else had organized a Sunday School in America, Bishop Asbury established the first Sunday School at the house of Thomas Crenshaw, in Hanover county, Va.
