(Ch.

4 locally at 8:30 p.m.). The premiere drama, "Circle of Death," was so surprisingly gobd that 'I decided to take a look at the second show on last Sunday was titled I tor ef ore writing a review. Bingo! 1 In some ways it was better television than the initial drama. I Briefly, "Circle of Death" was a tense, taut and wholly believable story about an emergency operation to remove alive Japanese shell froit0.he abdomen of a Marine- The drama was based on a true incident that took place on the deck of a hospital ship off Okinawa: during World War II. i The part of the surgeon was played in very realistic Manner by William Conrad.

And some readers may be interested to know that Conrad is the Veteran actor who created the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the radio version of 4'Gunsmoke. -1 1 I THE SECOND program, "VVictor 5," recounted the harrowing experience of a I young policeman who held five Wanted criminals at gun point for two hours before assistancCarrived. Its grim story was set in a tenement district', of Nev' York during the 1930s. Agruelling contest of nerves between a lone police officer, live dangerous criminals and antagonistic crowd whose "cop hating" code of the slums forbade them to help. 1 Jack Webb Is host- narrator and executive producer- of the series, so naturally the stories are related in a tit style that is reminiscent of his old "Dragnet" programs.

Namely, terse dialogue, tight camera shots, excellent emotional suspense and no wasted action. Webb's new "True" Ishows have all the earmarks of a critical smasheroo 1 s. Unfortunately critical, acclaim will probably outstrip ratings success hands down. The "True" series, you should understand, is telecast hi what the trade calls a time slot Its built-in handicap is the front running "Bonanza" western on Sunday 1, 4 i' sur rri IS a vast television audience and "True" is favofed with a sponsor (General Electric) who doesn't hit the cancellation panic button at thel drop of a Nielsen point 1 "True" will be given sufficient time to build an audience and here's one viewer who wishes- it well i The series is, by golly, a determined effort to provide a bit of variation from the wearying wholesomeness of the situation comedies and the cliche-ridden "drama" offered by too many of tv's so-called action shows. The "True" episodes 'will be factual dramas based on stories from the files of True Magazine.
