Smetana Quartet Concert The Smetana Quartet will present the third concert in the 196142 chamber music series sponsored by the Ethica4 Society of St. Louis, Jan. 22, at 830 p.m. at Sheldon Audi. torium, 3648 Washington Boule-, yard.

The quartet, which is making its first appearance in St. Louis, grew out ci the ful enthusiasm and diligent work of.a group of students ot the Prague Conservatory who, during the second Wodd War and enemy occupation, studied together. In 1945, under the name of the Smetana Quartet, the group made its first public appearance. Since then the ensemNe has appeared in practically all European countries and has achieved outstanding success at the festivals of Satz- burg and Bonn. In 1957 the group became the first cham- ber music group from an "Iron Curtain' country to the United States.
