N. Oct. 26 (fP) Jack Cummings, a little used reserve sophomore quarterback, came into his own Saturday to spark North Carolinas football team to a 14-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over winless Wake Forest.

Cummings drew the starting assignment after co-captain Dave Reed and two other players were dropped from the team yesterday for what Coach Jim Tatum called infractions of training rules. The winning touchdown came on a 90-yard 11-play drive that ended when Fullback Giles Gaea plunged over from the two. Cummings had passed to End Buddy Payne in the end zone from 21 yards out on a second down and one yard to go situation for the first Tar Heel touchdown late in the second period. WAKE FOREST cashed in on a fumbled punt a few minutes later for its only touchdown. North Carolina Half- back Ron Marquette fumbled a high punt at his own 30 and Wake Forest Tackle George Johnson recovered.

GORDON, Tennessee's one-man gang buster with his passing, running and punting, ripped the Maryland defense apart late in the third quarter when he launched the Volunteers goalward from his 46. The 190-pound tailback carried the ball seven out of 10 plays for 39 yards before turning the touchdown honor over to Bronson. Maryland spent the entire first half fighting Tennessee away from the goal after the Terps were unable to cash in on a boner at the start of the game. Stockton Adkins and Bill Anderson of Tennessee evidently forgot the opening kickoff was anybodys ball after it passed midfield.

They watched the ball bounce around in front of them and Maryland Guard Rod Breedlove pounced on it at the Tennessee 18. Tennessee refused to be rattled, however, and made Maryland give back the ball inches from the goal. Statistics Wash.
