"ynT5 1 Thursday February 7 1946 THE STILWELL DEMOCRAT-JOURNAL Page Seven the short mild winters allow the young timber to grow about ten months of the year Schools There are forty-six schools in the county most of them having sturdy rock buildings that show permanency four of which are high schools located at Stilwell' Westville Watts and Cave Springs A determined effort has been made by the school authorities in the past four years to have every school in the county accredited and permanent improvements have been made and equipment bought until forty-one of the schools are now state accredited All four of the high schools maintain long bus routes so as to make some high school available to each and every boy and girl who completes the eighth grade in the local school near their home The past two years a uniform standard has been set for all schools and the County Superintendent has requested that each school be painted inside and out every five years These instructions have been followed by the school directors and most every school building in the county has been painted and improved The people of the county are proud of their school system and each and every parent is interested in reducing the illiteracy of the people by seeing that each child attends school as regularly as possible Hunting and Fishing Nature smiled on Adair county when she gave her six clear-water streams These beautiful spring-fed creeks provide the out doors man with as fine fishing as any equal area in the Ozark region In these waters are found a variety of game fish large mouth bass Warmouth bass Kentucky or brown bass as he is locally called (that has no superior as a fighter) and crappie perch and channel cat The Bob White quail is the source of most amusement for the gun man and he is generously spread over the entire county Squirrels abound in the wooded areas with fox coon and opossum plentiful A few deer are to be found in the more remote areas A lover of the outdoors has come into his own when he locates in beautiful Adair county Churches Adair county has a number of splendid churches with the Baptist Methodist Christian Presbyterian Church of Christ Holiness and Seventh Day Adventist predominating in and near Stilwell However many other faiths are represented throughout the county Opportunities The low cost of land plus the normal low tax rates lend themselves to persons who wish to invest their capital The low capitalization of farm enterprises produce farm products at the lowest possible cost No advertising can be better than the many new industries that have been developed in recent years COME TO STILWELL and Adair County (courtesy of Stilwell Chamber of Commerce) as or for the fresh market FRUITS: Adair county is one of the largest producers of apples and peaches in the state The quality of these fruits are the finest that can be found in this section of the country Practically all varieties of apples are grown and many varieties of peaches are grown satisfactorily One orchard farm of 400 acres is entirely of apples and peaches Grapes and other small fruits: There is considerable acreage to grapes- strawberries and tame berries The yearly production of wild blackberries gathered in the county is second to none and $800000 was paid out for wild blackberries in Stilwell alone in 1943 General Field Crops: Due to the abundance of rainfall and short summer drouths all kinds of feed crops grow in abundance- The fertile creek valleys grow some of the finest corn in the state The seasons are such that fall-grown grains can be utilized very satisfactorily for winter pasture The pastures in Adair county having originally Big and Little Blue Stem grasses supplemented by Lespe-deza Yellow Hop plus Rye Grass small grains and vetch round out a year pasture program Industries Adair county has six canning plants with capacity to can 25 car loads of beans or tomatoes daily REA lines cover most of the county There are 20 saw mills in the county which furnishes abundance of building material A charcoal plant located at Baron one handle factory located at Stilwell In order to utilize the farm produce and other resources of the county a number of small industries have been established Outstanding among these is the canning plants for processing the fine crops of fruits and vegetables Six such plants dot the county at points most convenient for the farmers in -their locality Besides giving a local market for the farmers produce these plants furnish labor to hundreds of people The new Federal building in which is housed the postoffice was built in 1940 The Indian office occupies one-half of the ground floor of this building The Cherokee Indians have lived in Adair county ever since they were brought to Okla from North Carolina by the government in 1832 These full-blood Indians as a whole are very industrious and the government has furnished the younger Indians with assignments of land on which they are raising beans tomatoes berries and livestock Many of them have paid off their loans the government made them and are taking an active part in community affairs serving on local school boards and county offices as well The average annual payment for produce in Adair county for the Stilwell area alone has been $25000 for cream $87000 for chickens and $30000 for eggs Reese and Etheridge Produce Company Stilwell Okia shipped out by truck in 1944 green wrapped tomatoes equal to ten carloads This was in addition to the tomatoes bought and canned by the local canning plant in Stilwell The Stilwell Canning Co canned 1000 tons of spinach 625 tons of tomatoes and 800 tons of beans for the season of 1911 and their annual payrol is approximately $100000 a year The Stilwell Canning Co has three lines cf machinery which can be switched over in a few minutes so that they change from beans to tomatoes and then to spinach without removing or installing new machinery The two canning plants at West-ville Griffin Canning Co and Howard Canning Co) are each equipped to handle about the same amounts of beans tomatoes and as the Stilwell plant The Griffin Canning Co at Westville also can Loganberries and Boysenberries for the marget The Reese Tie Co of Stilwell buys ties in Stilwell Bunch Westville and Proctor all located in Adair county and in past years have paid out from $150000 for ties These ties are made of oak ash walnut and elm This makes an added income for farmers having growing timber on their land A large coke plant is located at Baron O-klahoma nine miles north of Stilwell which buys several thousand cords of timber of all kinds each year The Chas Amos Handle Co established in 1920 is the oldest industry in the county This company makes handles for axes picks sledges and hammers of all kinds and ships them 'all over the United States All these handles are made from hickory grown in Adair county This company has employed an average of 15 men over a period of years with a payroll of $5000 a day and do about $35000 worth of business annually Building Materials If you want to build a home of native stone or rock there is an abundance of it everywhere to be had for the asking The beautiful rolling and wooded hills either way you wish to look are really foothills of the and used as building stone make an inviting and desirable building There are many attractive farm houses dotting the county built out of native stone at a nominal cost for such labor has been cheap the past few years Many Indian and white men learned to build with rock during the depression years and the cost is sometimes less than a frame dwelling of the same size The WPA built thirty-six school houses of native rock which will be used for many generations All the mountains are covered with a growth of merchantable timber of oak hickory walnut sycamore and pine Much of the district has been cut over but young timber is growing and the 20 sawmills which dot the countryside along the natural gravel roads produce thousands of feet of building material each year The average annual rainfall of the district is thirty-six inches which is sufficient make a modern beauty shoppes 1 up-to-date funeral home 2 picture shows 1 modern machine shop 3 blacksmith shops 3 real estate offices A modern telephone system Municipally-owned light and water sys- tem getting its water from Starr springs 1 bank (Bank of Commerce) with a capi- tal stock of $25000 has a deposit of more than one-million dollars 1 3 'shoe shops and shoe stores 2 insurance and loan offices 1 abstract office 1 modern hatchery 3 doctors 1 dentist 1 newspaper Municipal airport being established There are many other businesses we have not mentioned and good openings for many more A County of General Farming A variety of farming is practiced throughout the county but due to its soil and climate it is particularly adapted to growing of fruits vegetables berries livestock dairy and poultry hay grasses and clovers With only about one-fifth of the land in cultivation Adair county has an unlimited source of pasture lands making livestock growing and dairying the chief source of farm income Vegetables for the fresh market and canning plants are grown in great quantities and several irrigation systems have been installed to furnish water for profitable vegetable growing farms Roads and Railroads The Kansas City Southern a major line reaching from Kansas City Mo to New Orleans La traverses the county with de-all-weather roads 14 miles of black-topping on Federal Highway 59 out of Stilwell is scheduled for early summer Highway No 59 a well-improved hard-surfaced rqad reaches from the North to South end of the county and High- way No 62 and State Highway No 51 traverses from East to West All roads are all-weather roads A network of good gravel roads connect all parts of the county with its major towns and serves the many famiies who wish access to high school or receive mail on rural routes The Breeding and Santa Fe bus lines offer passenger service to any point on the 5 two highways of the county throughout all hburs of the day Agriculture STOCK RAISING: The number one industry of Adair county is the raising of beef cat- -tie Adair county is especially desirable for raising of beef cattle because of the Hong growing season and short feeding season and the low cost of production Also with abundance of free range and supplemented with fine tame pastures principally rye grass les-pedeza Bermuda grass and yellow hop make possible the raising of stock at the cheapest possible cost Water for livestock is in abundance Practically every farm in the county has water furnished by wells numerous springs or live creeks The above also applies to raising hogs in our county DAIRYING: The north half of Adair county has been developed into a fine dairying community There are many fine up-to-date dairy farms registered dairy cattle and fine pastures located in this section The Pet Milk Co of Siloam Springs Ark supply an outlet by truck routes that serve the county POULTRY Poultry is one of the most popular enterprises in the county with practically every farm having a large flock of hens There are a large number of commercial broiler raisers who produce three and four batches of broilers every year TRUCK CROPS: During the last few years Adair county has become the number one horticultural county in the state producing about half the snap green beans and tomatoes produced by the State of Oklahoma There are three canneries in the county which process beans also several fresh market outlets There are six canneries in the county which process tomatoes and also many tons are shipped from the county packed Susan Theatre Friday and Saturday Feb
