DiMaggio singled his first time up and rocked young Mickey Mc-Dermott for a home run his next trip with a mate on to provide the American league pace-setters with their ultimate margin of victory. The Yankee Clipper also handled six chances without a miscue and ended the game by snaring Ted Williams' fly with the tying run on third base. Hank Bauer started the Yanks off with a three-run homer in the second inning but the Sox pecked away at Allie Reynolds and drove him out' in the ninth in favor of Joe Page, who doused the rally to preserve eighth triumph in nine decisions. The largest crowd of the Red Sox home season, fans took in the game. Lefty Alex Kellner won his fifth straight game and his 11th of the season as he pitched the runncr-up Philadelphia Athletics to a 6-1 triumph over the Senators in Washington.

Kellner held the Nats to seven hits and cruised all the way as his mates gave him three runs to work with in the first Riming. The Cleveland Indians downed the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, and as a result valuted from fifth to third place with the Red Sox dropping from third to fourth and the Tigers from fourth to fifth.
