The paths guide class choices. Career counseling is vital to the program, and students work with stalf to develop a long-term educational plan.

Mcnzel said CVs coun-. seling and career information is done well. Businesses work closely with the 1 program, offering school speakers and opportunities for students to do job shadowing in the workplace. During their visit, Rogers and Mcnzel watched students in a design technology class present a project to Goodwill Industries representatives. They get a real world challenge, Ropers said.

"This is not just an assignment." CVs program offers both direction and freedom, Rogers said. School leaders are able to hire good staff and let them do their work well," she said. Ruddells business background is also a key, Rogers said, because educators often dont have that experience. The evaluators asked students for their opinions. They also met with school staff, business and community members, state education officials and legislators.

If the fedcial highway comes to Northport, Kurrle favors having it cross into British Columbia at the Boundaiy-Waneta border station instead of the Fronticr-Paterson station. That would avoid a dangerously steep grade on the Canadian side, he noted. Russ Larsen, overseer of the Fort Colville Grange, wanted Highway 395 to go to Trail via Kettle Falls, not the Williams Lake Road. That would improve chances of getting a four-lane road from Colville to Kettle Falls, he reasoned.

But Cash said traffic counts already justify four lanes between Colville and Kettle Falls, and rerouting I lighway 395 wouldnt affect that. Cash said there were mixed comments about a truck bypass proposed by the city of Colville. Some liked the idea of getting the trucks out of downtown, but others didnt want trucks in their areas. Few, if any, residents of the sparsely populated Aladdin Road, another proposed route from Colville to Northport, attended Thursdays meeting. Cash speculated they may not have gotten the word yet that their county road is being considered for a federal highway.

Or perhaps they dont take it Cash said the route has some engineering advantages and would affect the fewest people, but acknowledged it is unlikely the route will be chosen because of the high cost of bringing 40 miles of county road up to federal standards. Another drop-by meeting on the Highway 395 proposals is scheduled Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Chewelah Community Center. 10 Williams Lake Roud resident Betsy Landes said. The Williams Lake Road is a popular shortcut from Colville to Northport.

It connects with state Highway 25, which runs from Kettle Falls to Northport. Williams Lake Road bypasses Kettle Falls and shaves about seven miles off the trip to Northport. Like several others at Thursdays meeting, Landes favored keeping the federal highway through Kettle Falls. Cash said Williams Lake Road already has about twice as much traffic as Highway 25 carries north of Kettle Fulls, but Williams Lake Road By Margaret Taus Stuff writer Central Valley High Schools program to prepare students for the work world is one of 14 models chosen for a national study. Anne Rogers and Scott Mcnzel from the National Institute for Work and Learning in Washington, D.C., spent four days this week observing CVs SCOPE program.

They were looking for examples of what makes school-to-work 'programs succeed and what makes them fail. SCOPE which stands for Student Career Opportunity Paths in Education is a two-year-old program designed to help students identify career interests early and understand how their high school studies relate to specific jobs. Students can't leave high school and not have any direction, said Dan Ruddell, a former businessman who now works as SCOPE coordinator. "Those days have been eliminated." The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is tied to federal education reform legislation, Menzcl said.

Central Valley is the last of 14 sites across the country to be studied and the only one in Washington, Rogers said. We looked for diversity in models and kinds of communities, Rogers said. CV Highs program attracted the researchers with its strong emphasis on career planning. 17HOO Our Baby Brother) 50! Happy Birthday JERRY ROCHELLE Love, LADIES DAY WED. A proposal to reroute U.S. 1 lighway 395 onto the Williams Lake Road west of here wasnt popular with some residents of the county road who attended an informational meeting Thursday.

The proposal is one of several under consideration by the state Transportation Department for changing Highway 395's destination from Grand Forks to Trail, British Columbia, Leonard Cash, regional planning engineer for the Transportation Department, said no one who attended informal meetings Tuesday at Deer Park and Thursday at Colville spoke in favor of keeping the present route from Kettle Falls to Grand Forks. But the 40 or so people who attended the Deer Park meeting were concerned mainly with safety improvements in their area, Cash said. A few were interested in a bypass of Chewelah, proposed by that citys government, but their interest evaporated north of there. Williams Lake Road was the most discussed topic among two or three dozen people who attended the first hour of the two-hour Colville meeting. Eight out of 10 voters surveyed said they didnt think gun control laws would keep criminals from getting guns. By almost the same ratio, survey respondents said they support a law that would ban the sale of semiautomatic military-style weapons. Pollsters didnt use the term "assault rifles" because of complaints by un-rights groups that it is an unfair abel. The results for both questions were similar to a poll of Idaho voters conducted for the newspaper and television station in March.

It seems that nobody is suggesting (gun control) is going to solve the crime problem, but nobody thinks the ban is a detriment to their ability to hunt or shoot guns they own," Ali said. We need health-care reform, but we dont want federal bureaucrats taking control of our personal health decisions as Clinton would have us do, Gorton said. But a spokesman for House Speaker Tom Foley, who is trying to usher health care through the House, said Clinton recognizes the problems his package faces.

Clinton met with congressional leaders and all House Democrats on Wednesday, urging them to pass a plan that guarantees health insurance for everyone, Foley aide Jeff Biggs said, When the president addressed the caucus, he noted thut health care would be attacked under his name.
