(AP Wire-photo) Live Oak Church School Presents Program Tonight The first Christmas celebration in the newly constructed Live Oak Community Methodist church will be held this evening at 7'30 o'clock with children from every depart ment of the church school partici pating in the program. Mrs. Earl Giles, church school director, announced that the children would present recitations, instrumental and vocal numbers, a verse-speaking choir and a pantomime. Emphasis of the program is placed on sharing, as each child has been asked to bring a white gift of food, clothing or toys. Parents have also been urged to bring their white gift to assist the needy in the community.

Following the evening program the Youth Fellowship of Live Oak will join with the young people of Grace Methodist church to go caroling. J. Kane, Private Detective, is Dead San Francisco, Dec. 3 A. J- Kane, 60, a private detective who cracked many famous cases, died yesieraay.

He established the A. J. Kane detective agency in 1910 and over the years solved many sensational crimes. In 1919 he nabbed Theodore Banta, a young San Francisco embezzler, tracking him to Wheeling, W. Va.

Later he apprehended two of the remaining members of the "Forty Strong" bank gang after a daring daylight robbery of the Al-varado bank in Alameda county. His work involved dangerous assignments. He was shot in the back in the 1920's while investigating the Ku Klux Klan for a district attorney. By Appointment Ph. 85-W-4 Holds Eve Service The customary Christmas Eve midnight service at the Calvary Episcopal church will begin at 11:30 o'clock Saturday night with holy communion and a short address, with Christmas music. On Sunday there will be the celebration of holy communion at 8 o'clock. The Christmas service for the church school will have an offertory by the junior choir and a special item for the instruction period in addition to carols and appropriate hymns. At 11 o'clock the choral communion service will be held with a sermon and Christmas music.

There will be no vesper service in the afternoon. Illustrates Service At Church of God During the one-hour service at the First Church of God, Seabright at Broadway, Sunday evening, Pastor-artist Wade B. Jakeway, will draw with colored chalk a picture entitled "A White Christmas," while Dick Woodsome, talented soloist, provides background singing of carols and hymns. The drawing will show an American Christmas setting rather than the usual Oriental background with a spotlight emphasizing it under six different colored lights. The service will begin at 7:30 o'clock with a cordial invitation extended to the public.

St. John's Offers Two Yule Services Two Christmas celebrations will be offered at St. John's Episcopal church at Capitola, opening with a high choral eucharist at 11:30 o' clock on Christmas eve. The evening service will include the blessing of the creche followed by special musical selections by the choir. Soloist will be Margaret Feagin who will sing Holy Night." Then take a turkey neck and two wings already cooked and steam and serve with steamed rice. Another way to set the family mind off slightly-used turkey is to dice what left of the dark and white meat. Add some red or green peppers and mushrooms, add two tablespoons of butter and cook for 10 minutes. Then put in three ounces of sherry wine and Vz pint of cream, plus two tablespoons of flour and the yolk of an egg. Serve in a patty shell and the folks won't know they're eating turkey at all, Rota says.

But one of Rota's favorites is what he calls "turkey short cake planta tion." You slice up what is left of the turkey and slosh in half a glass of white wine and a pint of cream sauce. Then you bake some corn bread and saw it up Into three-inch squares. Then you put the whole thing into the oven and bake until it is a golden brown. Serve with sweet potatoes, a slice of ham on top, plus any kind of soft cheese. It sounded good and it was.

Prisoner Makes Good On Second Escape Attempt Texarkana. Dec. 23 VP). A 24-j-ear-old man held here after escaping from the Kern county, jail, sawed his way out of the Texarkana city jail this week. He is James Prince White, one of seven men who made a mass escape November 12 from the Cali fornia jail, three days after he was arrested in Bakersfield, on charges of burglary, narcotics possession and probation violation.

Bowie county officers here ar rested White Tuesday and said he admitted burglarizing a drive-in theater here and attempting two other burglaries. White sawed through a seven- inch bar in a cell window seven feet high after piling on his cot old traffic stands kept in his cell. He then slipped out a side door. Father J. M. Phelan announced. The mass will include holy com munion, benediction of the blessed sacrament, a sermon, and Christmas carols by the choir under the direction of Leo Garsky with Vir ginia Garsky at the organ. Soloist for the 9 o'clock mass is Barbara Doran, and Anita Giudici will be at the organ.

The morning mass will also include the sermon and holy communion. At the 11 a.m. mass Captain Laf-fler will be the organist and Louis Breckon, soloist. Raymond M. Squire, pastor, has announced that his sermon topic for the day will be "Christmas Day, 1949. There will be a num ber of appropriate Christmas an thems presented by the senior and junior choirs under the direction of Vera McKenna Clayton. At the regular Sunday school time, 9:45 o'clock, there will be a presentation of the Christmas Story according to Matthew and Luke, using beautiful full-color slides The Sunday school assembly will be in charge of Arthur Ward. There will also be carol singing and the customary song sung to a shut-in member of the church school, over the telephone.

Baptists Combine Christmas Service A unified service for both Sunday school and congregation will be held at 10 o'clock Sunday in place of the regular services at the First Baptist church. Dr. Arthur S. Lewis, pastor, will have a message for children and adults. Van Dyke's story of the "Foolish Fir Tree" will be followed bv an address on "The Wonderful Christ." The junior choir under the direction of Mrs.

Little Santa Cruz county, far from the main currents of California activity, has been sidestepped by most authors. Now, with the issuance Of a new volume entitled "Oil Lamps Iron this county comes into its own.

The book chronicles the fascinating tale of the building, development, and alas, decline, of narrow-gauge lines, nia and Oregon. Of particular interest here are two chapters on Santa Cruz county narrow-gaueg lines. "Iron Ponies" was written by three men: Frederick Shaw, Sau-salito architect; Clement Fisher Jr. of the Santa Fe railroad, and George H. Harlan, U.

S. army transport service official at Fort Mason. The book jacket train design is the work of Warren Chase Mer-ritt, Aptos artist. Merritt has been a friend of Shaw for many years. He is expert on trains, having designed many covers for railroad fan magazines.

In an informal style, the three writers tell tales of railroading in the old days. Change and modify said proceed ings to increase the boundaries of the assessment district to include addition al lots on Railroad Avenue (now Esca lona Avenue) to Bay Avenue, and all the lots on Saxon Avenue and Central Avenue, and Grand Avenue to Cliff Avenue, Fairview Avenue between Central Avenue and Cliff Avenue, and on the east side of Cliff Avenue be tween Fairview Avenue and Grand Avenue: and all the lots on McCor mick Avenue and Park Avenue from Bay Avenue to Washburn Avenue, Lorn a Avenue from McCormick Avenue to Washburn Avenue, Younger Avenue from Monterey Avenue to Loma Avenue and on the west side of Washburn Avenue from Monterey Avenue to Park Avenue. 4.

Change and modify th proceed ings to assess the cost of the newer line Bay Avenue from Park Ave nue to Cherry Avenue to the property in said proposed assessment district north of Park Avenue and East of Monterey and Bay Avenues. 5. Change and modify the proceedings so that the cost of the Improvements south of Escalona Avenue and east of Central Avenue be assessed upon the area lying south of the South ern Pacific Railroad and east of Bay Avenue and Cliff Avenue and its southerly prolongation to the Bay of Mon terey. 6. That said changes and modifica tions be done by endorsement on the face or the engineers report or oy filing amended documents therein, or by both.
