Mrs. Hansen Tells Woman's Luncheon Club Of Islands The Woman's Friendly Luncheon club, with about 30 present, enjoyed their monthly luncheon meeting at Hotel Palomar last Thursday. Mrs.

Grace Hairston, chairman of the day, presented Mrs. Harry J. Hansen, who told in a most interesting manner of "Life in the Philippines," her subject dealing mostly with her actual contact with the people of the Philippines. She is the wife of Rear Admiral Harry Hansen who was commanding officer in the naval station at Olongapo, and also was mayor of the adjoining town. The admiral was sent home just a few days before the bombs fell on Pearl Harbor.

Mrs. Hansen left the Islands December 31, 1940. Manila, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, was founded in the fifteen hundreds. The first wall surrounding the city was of logs, later replaced with, walls of clay, which were two and three-quarters miles long. The destruction of the city was so great during the recent war, that the job of rebuilding looks quite hopeless.

The Manila hotel was not entirely destroyed. The architecture is of Spanish influence. The mosquitoes were terrible, but the admiral had succeeded in ridding the base of. them. Their home there was one of very large rooms built high off the ground, was furnished with the native-made, very beautiful rattan furniture and grass rugs and was very comfortable, but it was necessary to keep lights burning in the closets to avoid mildew.

-An interesting story told by Mrs. Hansen was of a flood. Where in the morning the road was thick with dust, in the evening when they went over it their lives were endangered by the water which in spots was as deep as eight feet. It rains as much as 25 inches in '24 hours. The hospitality of the Philippine people is charming, but it is not a white man's country.

The natives have many dialects. They are of a reticent nature and make wonder ful servants. Their pay was small, but since the war they are being spoiled by outside interests offering much more. School teachers receive 40 pesos, the equivalent of $20. The great scourges of the Philippines are dengue fever, malaria and dysentery.

It is unsafe to eat raw foods of any kind. Mrs. Hansen wore a beautiful native dress of white, fine pina cloth, the material made from the fibre of the pineapple. It had an apron-shaped overskirt and collar of a beautiful aqua threaded with silver, and was most becoming. It was a gut to Mrs.

Hansen from native teachers, in appreciation of her work in sponsoring a dance and entertainment to raise money for their school. The secretary was instructed to write to the city council in regard to funds for the library. Mrs. Ger-aldine Work was present and ex plained the present situation in which library board finds it self. Three lovely solos were suns by Mrs.

Alexa B. Mackav, accompanied by Mrs. Ethel Schultz: "The House on a Hill," "Clouds" and "Lassie of Mine." The women stood in reverent silence in memory of Mrs. Alice bathurst, the club secretarv. who died since the last meeting.

Mrs. Grace Hairston accented thp office for the balance of the year. Electa Circle Luncheon Electa Circle will meet at Para dise Park Friday at 12:30 o'clock tor a no-host pot-luck luncheon. PUBLIC NOTICh NOTICE OF TIME APPOINTED FOR PROVING WILL. ETC.
