When the word comes back from Sheffield stating the weights of the boys that will come here, if they do, the battlers will be offering their services by the dozen, as in days gone by. BY WALTON LOWRY News Baseball Writer Two pitching stars with a Birmingham background Lefty Alex Kellner and Virgil Trucks may well be key figures in Tuesdays All-Star game at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. Trucks and Kellner, two of the winningest" pitchers in baseball, will be on band to twirl for the American Leaguers as they seek to continue their domination over the National League in the 16th annual baseball dream game." The American League All-Stars have won 11 of the 15 previous games, and theyll be favored again, come Tuesday afternoon. Why? Because they have pitchers like Trucks and Kellner and an array of power hitters.

TRUCKS, ACE of the Detroit staff, is a big righthander who grew up on the Birmingham sandlots. Most batters say his pitches are a sizzling fast one and a whistling "faster one. Trucks, who has posted a 10-5 record so far this season, is the current baseball strikeout king, having whiffed 98 batters. KELLNER, WHO pitched for the 1947 Birmingham Barons, has hit the heights in a hurry. Other rookies like Detroits Johnny Groth hogged the spotlight at the seasons start.

But now it looks like Kellner may be the rookie of the year. And for a good reason. The big, stocky southpaw who pitches for Mr. Macks Philadelphia As has won 12 games. And many see him as a 20-game winner in his first full season in the big show.

Eddie Glennon, general manager of the Birmingham Barons, and Tom Turner, a silver-haired scout for the Philadelphia As, predicted a big league future for Kellner How good is your insurance? An invitation to those furious fist flingers from Muscle Shoals to journey here and take on the Birmingham belters has been extended and word from Red Gaskins, their coach, is awaited. The date set is Friday night at Cascade Plunge. Th Sheffield battlers won four out of five starts from Bill Irbys Sylacauga team last week. They also polished off more than half of the Birmingham boys who invaded Florence some time back. The heat, illness and vacations have cut a wide swath in the ranks of the local boxers.

Most of Joe Calamusas warriors are out at Camp Horner where the Boys Club vacations in the great out doors. Larry Weems, Boys Industrial School, says his clan will be back in action in a couple of weeks. BILLY TRERO is ill with malaria, cohtacted while in the Marine 1 Corp. Bruce Sanders and Braxton Bradley, East Birmingham are on the injured list. Bruce has a bad knee and Bradley a sprained back.

Charley Clark is nursing a bad eye. Sgt. Ray Mulverhill, Air Base heavyweight, has a bursted ear drum. However the above mentioned ALEX KELLNER Glennon often said, He pitches like he has ice water in his veins. Kellner broke into baseball with the Tucson, club in 1941, winning 13 and losing six.

Tucson, incidentally, is his home town. After a stretch in the service he came to the Barons in 1947, winning 11 and losing nine with a sixth place club. Pad- O'-Pdnt Satchel Paige and Don Newcombe in the major leagues? Well, thats an interesting story. TWICE, BIGTIME opportunities were nearly Davis but both times they fell through. However, he is hopeful that the third knock is it! The first chance came in July of 1947.

Piper was having a splendid season with the Black Barons. Robinson had just signed with Brooklyn and Doby was property of the Indians. Two clubs were watching Davis with plans of signing the infielder. However, the St Louis Brown stepped in and bought a 30-day option right on Davis from Black Barons owner Tom Hayes. But the Browns never exercised their rights.

DAVIS WAS appointed manager of the Black Barons in 1948. He led the team to a league pennant but lost the Negro World Series championship to the Homestead Grays in five games. Piper finished the 48 season with a batting mark of .350, second in the league only to teamates Art Wilson, .376. Wilson was signed by the Cleveland Indians after the New York Yankees had made him an offer. Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler later voided the Indian deal and made Wilson property of the Yankees.

Recently the New York Giants tried to land Davis. But again, Pipers chance to star in the majors was blocked. The reason, Owner Hayes wouldnt sell or release Davis because he is too valuable to the Black Barons in their pennant race. Hayes thought it would wreck the club to dispose of Wilson and Davis in the same year. Davis is currently pacing the league in batting with a .392 mark.

He slammed his third homer at! Rickwood July Fourth. The drive cleared the scoreboard and took one short bounce hitting the old concrete wall 467 feet from home plate. Playing his seventh campaign with the Black Barons, Piper has batted less than the .300 mark but once, in 1946. Before making his pro debut, Davis played with Acipco in the Negro Industrial League for four seasons. Davis, who says his age Is about 32, gets his nickname from his hometown of Piper, Ala.

He however, came to school in Fair-field and finished from the Fair-field Industrial High School in 1935. From 1942 through 1946, Davis was connected with Harlem Globetrotters, Chicago professional basketball team, as a player and manager. Last Winter was spent playing Winter Baseball in Cuba. With Davis playing career nearing an end because of his age, maybe hell get his real chance in the big leagues in 1950. Black Barons Play Philly Stars Sunday Ed Boldens Philadelphia Stars, members of the Negro American League, will make their first appearance in Birmingham Sunday at Rickwood Field when they meet the Birmingham Black Barons.
