Te levidon Bra. 3 Convicred,Shows Heed 'Laugh Traile to Get Yaks Ily HAL HUMPHREY HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 4.--TV sponsors and producers believe they have hit upon a device which will allow them to duck their responsibility for entertaining video viewers. It's called a "laugh track." - By adding these laugh tracks to most of the situation comed)t films now being produced in Hollywood for TV, the industry is under the illusion that the viewers won't be able to tell the good ones from the bad ones. , - : Marc Daniels, who directed "I Love Lucy" last year and is currently holding down that post on ,"I Married Joan," is one of the few within the industry openly to condemn this shilling for laughs. "We're dictating to the viewers when we add studio laughs In any form," Daniels says. "We're Ealing. We don't trust the viewers, nor do we have faith in what we are doing., - The laughs are added to convince both ourselves and viewers that the show is funny." , Some time ago Daniels was licalled in to direct. a pilot film I for a new TV series based on "Blondie." He did it without a studio audience. When network officials previewed the film they liked it but said, "We've got to add a laugh track." When, Daniels was naive enough to ask why, he was told, "Because we can sell it more easily to a sponsor." In other words, the sponsor does not trust his own judgment of what is funny, either. But if be bears laughs on the film, then be's convinced. There are two basic methods for adding a laugh track on film. The "I Love Lucy" meth. od is to film the show in front of an audience, picking up the laughs as the show is shot. The second technique involves running off a "preview" of the film in a small theater, recording the audience laughs and...tripping them -onto the film in ths laboratory. In either ease you are depriving the home viewer of his right to discover for himself if be thinks the show Is as funny as a group of people did who saw it previously.
