Victor has scored another triumph with Ita disc version of "Trovatore," complete on two long-plays.

From the lovely, haunting sound of the horns in the Introduction to the gloomy grand finale, it le a first-class job. The Traubel-Toscaninl teamwork in the Wagner is a classic and truly belongs in the "Treasury of Immortal Performances." Anyone with access to a radio or a phonograph can get all the opera he wants or needs. The Mees Saturday broadcasts have begun, provision is being made for televised versions, and the recorded repertory is at a fullness never before attained.

Those who crave opera In the flesh and who are uncritical possibly may get pleasure from the several amateur groups which have sprung up here. All circumstances considered, the best for the money is being offered on discs. For the price of a single "live" performance, which may turn out to be a dead and desiccated duck, you can get performances that are superbly sung and magnificently recorded, unending in their delight and always available when you are In the operatic mood. Among newer releases are Westrninster's "Don Pasquale" of Donizetti, a comic opera in three acts; Victoes "Amahl and the Night Visitors," by Menotti, In English, and with the original cast of the NBC telecast; Victor's 'TI Trovatore" by Verdi, with Milanov, Bjoerling, Barbieri and Warren, all three corn. plete with librettos; Victor's "Operatic Duets," featuring Bjoerling and Merrill in Verdi, Puccini and Bizet arias; Victor's "Highlights from La Boheme." by Puccini, with Albanese, Di Stefano, Munsel and Warren; Victor's 'Immortal mice' by Helen Traubel and Toscanini and the NBC of "Brunnhilde's Immolation" from the finale of Wagner's "Gotterdammerung" and his "Siegfried Idyll" as only Toscanini can play It; Victor's "Highlights from Lucia" by Donizetti, with Munsel, Peerce, Merrill and Pinza, and, for those who like operetta, Columbia's "Student Prince" by Romberg, with Kirsten and Rounseville starring.

In addition, Columbia has just released Mozart's "Cost Fan Tutte," in English, and Polymusic has put out a Mozart rarity, his "Zaide," previously discussed here. And this is the merest indication of the treasures available. The Westminster "Don Pasquale," with Argeo Quadri conducting th; Vienna State Opera orchestra and a cast that includes Melchiore Luise in title role and Lina Aymaro as Norina and Juan Oncina as Ernesto, is exceptionally well put together, with Quadri handling his forces deftly to bring out to the fullest the farcical situations with which the work abounds. Diction is of the purest and there is an intensity and dramatic drive about it that is most compelling. Menotti is of our own day and age, proving that the writing of opera is still a very going concern.

His "Telephone," "The Medium," 'The Old Maid and the Thief" and others have won permanent -place, and "Allied" is quite likely to join them. It's an opera in one act, and Menotti wrote both the words and the music. He avows It is for children, but don't let that fool you. It is for anyone of any age who enjoys a good story and exciting music. It is excellently recorded by Victor, with Chet Allen as Amahl, the 12-year-old crippled boy, and Rosemary Kuhlmann as his mother, with orchestra and chorus directed by Thomas Furthermore, it is In English, a point for those who advocate this.

21. Fit. teen years ago In a still unending pursuit of knowledge about the theater. I asked George Abbott to tell tne everything he knew about farcical comedy. George.

Thomas advised the young man, -Thil way to writs farce Is to get man up a tree In the first act, throw rocks at bins In the second. and get him down In the third." The nest two rules Abbott arrived at came from his own experience. One was 'Play It straight and play It for character." The third and possibly most Important regulation was. 'Never give the audience time to think." These are the ABCs of corn. edynot parlor or Intellectual comedy.

mind you. but unabashed laugh stuffand any. body who has mastered these simple ABCs should be able to write a hit. But so few people do! So far this 'talon only one man has turned the trickname of George Axelrod, who has given us a delightful piece titled 'The Seven Year Itch." Let's see how the Thomas Abbott rules work out on "The Seven-Year Itch." In the first act a husband become a summer bachelor In his apartment when his wife bares Junior to the cape and leaves him prey to whatever happens. What happens is that he becomes Involved.
