Crusade "Shug'' Worsham Is Named Chairman for Stilwell Organization VFFA Boys Are Feeding Calves for Stock Show Two members of the Stilwell chapter of Future Farmers of America are feeding out calves which they plan to enter in the Muskogee Fat Stock Show in 1958 it was announced this week by Bill Garrett FFA advisor Tne two boys are Mike Horn of the Horn Community and Kenneth Doyle of West Peavine The calves were purchased recently for the boys by Garrett at Guthrie Junior Berry Growers Will Meet Feb 27 Club Has Sixty Members and Is Seeking New Ones Strawberries and dollars will be the main topic at a meeting of the Junior Strawberry club next Wednesday at 1:30 in the auditorium of the Stilwell grade school Cultural practices insects markets and financing will be discussed and new members may make application to join the club in 1957 The club has more than 60 members from all pa its of the county The goal of the club is to teach each member how to do a better job of raising strawberries and show a profit above the project The records in 1956 show the average profit to be $250 per acre or more The project has a calendar of approved practices starting with clearing land and preparing the soil during the first tvzo months of the- year The pay-off is marketing the berries in the spring More than $200 in prize money was paid in 1956 in the strawberry contest Tire amount will double in 1957 as first and second year beds will be judged FIIA to fake Heart Sunday Contributions February 24 is Heart Sunday when volunteers will visit every house in Stilwell in the afternoon to take contributions for the Heart Fund Drive Members of the Future Homemakers of America of the Stilwell chapter will visit every rouse in Stilwell and members of the Westville chapter will visit every house in Westville to take donations for the heart Fund Drive in Adair County The goal is $1440 Kenneth Carlcton Adair County chairman of the 1957 Heart Fund Drive stated Plastic hearts have been placed in all business firms for the convenience of those who wish to contribute to the fund The Adair county Heart Fund Drive leaders include: Kenneth Carlcton Co-chairman Norvel Trask assistant co-chairman Miss Sylvia Holland vice chairman in Stilwell Woodrow Bowles Westville Felix Eads Bell and Joe Robertson Cave Springs Mrs Ross Receives Birthday Greetings From Saudi Arabia Last Thursday Mrs Elizabeth Ross received birthday greetings by way of telephone from her son Calvin who is in Saudi Arabia lie made the call from there on Friday February 15 Mrs birthday and she received it here at two Thursday February 14 Telephone connections just recently have been made with some of the Middle Eastern countries West Builds First Nuclear Power System Former Stilwell Man Project Manager on the Argonne Reactor John Merle West formerly of Stilwell now employed by the Atomic Energy Commission at the Argonne National Labratory near Chicago has played an important role in the first nuclear power system an experimental boiling water reactor which was dedicated Saturday Feb 9 and was put into one eontinous operation without refueling The heat reactor was built to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of large scale power plants using uranium fuel of the lowest possible enrichment in uranium 235 the fissionable substance in atomic bombs The Argonne reactor can operate for a year with a net loss of only six pounds of fissionable material This compares with an estimated 5000 tons of coal which would be required to operate an electric generator of similar capacity West at the present time is reactor engineer at Argonne and is the project manager of the huge four and one-half million dollar reactor West was born and reared near He graduated from Stilwell High School in 1935 received his bachelor of science degree from Northeastern in 1939 and his masters degree in physics from the University of Iowa in 1941 at the age of twenty-one Since graduation from the University of Iowa West has been employed by I DuPont de Nemours and Co Inc and the Atomic Energy Commission daring which time he received the Charles A Coffin award the youngest person ever to have received this coveted medal for outstanding scientific-research work West is the son of the late James West and Mrs Maude West of Oklahoma City a brother of Edgar West Route 2 Stilwell and Mrs Vera Robbins Pasco Washington A hearing on Senate Bill 118 has been set for 10 a Monday Feb 25 in Room 428-A of the State Capitol building This is the bill which would impose a 2 pci cent tax on all forms of advertising Every newspaper in the state is fighting the bill and every businessman in the state should be This says ALL FORMS OF ADVERTISING Even the little classified ad! That means every person in the state should be against this bill Write your state senator and state representative today Now is the time so that he may know your views in time for the hearing Monday morning Our United States still can be saved from the destruction toward which it is fast heading It has not yet reached the point of no return Our nation still is worth saving It is not so far in debt that it cannot again become solvent without repudiation Adoption of many of the Hoover Report recommendations is deemed necessary os part of the return to solvency and democracy The report of one Hoover subcommittee is now in both house and senate This is the bill on budgeting and accounting Passage of this bill would -not only save the taxpayers four billien dollars but would make the budgeting and much more efficient One of the most important recommendations made by the Hoover Report is that of selling all businesses in the United States and all over the world that are competing with private enterprise These businesses owned by the United States government pay no taxes we have to pay taxes to keep them going The total value of these government businesses is more than 105 billion dollars These businesses should be sold It is recommended that proceeds from the sale of these businesses be paid on our national debt This would save two or three billion dollars in interest WThen these businesses are sold they would pay at least six billion dollars in taxes into the United States treasury besides taxes to local and state governments There are many suggestions in the Second Hoover Report on re ducing unnecessary expenses and red tape The suggestions 'if carried out would make our government more efficient and cut our taxes by 20 to 30 per cent Mrs Jennie Carney our faithful correspondent from Watts has been writing the news of that area for our paper for many years Mrs Carney tried to retire from this about a year ago but there was no one who wanted the job Mrs Carney did retire for a while but with no news from Watts area started writing again Mrs Carney still would like to turn the job over to someone else Surely there is someone in the Watts vicinity who would write the news and happenings for the good people there If you will do it drop us a line or talk to Mrs Carney Did you hear about the oetupus that fell into a cement mixer? Crazy mixed-up squid District Judge Glen Morris Oklahoma City last Saturday-named Stilwell for the new trial of Governor administrative assistant Jenks Ciaig and former Emergency Relief Board Administrator Frank Easley Craig and Easley face charges of plotting to use ERB $20 checks to pay workers in former Senator John election campaign last July Judge Morris called for a second trial after jurors deadlocked when Russell was tried Judge Morris explained he chase Stilwell because none of the principals in the trial lived here The decision was vigorously protested by Wagoner County attorney Max Findley who suggested the trial be held in Muskogee or Tahlequah Craig asked for an immediate hearing after Judge Morris ruled he could not get a fair trial in Wagoner county but Findley insisted that Easley be tried first Morris said last Saturday there would be a lapse of about ten days before the change cf venue is processed in Stilwell before setting the date for trial of Craig Late Wednesday transcript of the Wagoner proceedings had not been received in Stilwell court officials stated Farm Bureau Members Attend Policy Meeting1 Five members of the Adair County Farm Bureau attended an area policy execution meeting-yesterday in the Student Union Building at Northeastern State college Tahlequah Those who attended are Dotson chairman Mr and Mrs Ray Blakemore and Mr and Mrs Charlie Russell The five were selected February 16 at a board of directors meeting in the Stilwell city substation License Tag Fee Doubles on March 3 Beginning March 3 vehicles displaying 1956 Oklahoma license tags will be subject to seizure and sale and the penalty due will be equal to the licenser ice due it was reported by Mr Dell Kersey local tag agent The Motor Vehicle Law of Oklahoma provides that anyone violating any provisions of thi law is guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction be fined not less than $10 and not more than $100 for each day the violation occured Mrs Kersey stated A penalty of 10 cents per day is now being charged in accordance with state law This penalty will continue until March 2 when the penalty reaches $3 after which the new penalty goes into effect Stilwell Oklahoma Farmers Analyzing Progress Systematic Check-Ups Mark Year's End of Operations Prospects of increased efficiency in farming operations during the coming season and evidence of progress last year are showing up on several Adair county farms as the result of systematic check-ups on last operations Geo Waters Farmers Home administration county supervisor reported this week At the end of each farm business year those farm families who are using FIIA credit to buy improve or operate their farms analyze their past business Aiter noting the strong and weak points in their operations they make plans for better farming during the coming year Assistance in this analysis and planning is supplied by the Farmers Home administration county office personnel Arrangements to use this service in connection with loan funds advanced by the agency are part of each agreement with the FHA The service is known as the year-end analysis To enable the farm families to make full and efficient use of their labor and increase their income careful consideration is given to the adequacy and full utilization of their land livestock and equipment When necessary loan funds are provided to attain or develop the needed resources Among the improvements planned as a result of farm records recently analyzed in the Adair county FHA office are improved systems of farming soil and water conservation measures better cropping practices improved herd management farm drainage weed control and other improved farm and home management practices A better balance between cash ciops and livestock operations is needed in many instances Waters said he and all other county supervisors keep in close touch with the local county agricultural agents the State College of Agriculture experiment farms and the work of other agencies to equip themselves to assist borrowers in taking advantage of the latest developments agricultuie County Court Sunday Bird entered a plea of guilty before County Judge Arnold February 18 to charges of driving vzhile under the influence of intoxicating liquor He was fined $25 and costs and sentenced to 10 days in jail Dan Livers entered' a plea of guilty February 9 before County Judge Arnold on charges of larcency from stores in two cases He was sentenced to the penitentiary for one year on each count Paul Files Governor of the Texas Oklahoma District announced today thd Ki-wanian Musick Austin Texas has been selected to lead the 1957 Saftey Crusade The appointment was approved by the Board of Trustees during the recent District meeting in Dallas Musick who for the last seven years has been general manager of the Texas Safety Association is widely recognized as one of the foremost safety experts in the Southwest Berry Ferguson President augment traffic safety and urge cities to adopt the Uniform Model Traffic Oraiances (6) Support special-emphasis and seasonal traffic programs in each locality (7) Secure safety aids other material well as for Traffic Roy (Shug) Worsham has been elected Safety Committee Chairman of the Kiwanis Club of Stilwell Fire Destroys English Home The home of Mrs Mat English was completely destroyed by fire about 3 pm Monday afternoon A bad connection in the electric wiring was reported to be the cause of the fire which destroyed the three-ioom house and everything in it Mrs English lived alone in the house Funeral Held for Mrs II Wood Funeral service for Mrs Wood 69 years old who died here Saturday February 16 was held Monday February 18 at 11 am in the Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Jack Steele pastor of the Christian Church officiating Mrs Wood was born September 25 1887 at Van Buren Arkansas She was a member of the Christian church Survivors include four da ugh ters Mrs Joe II be served at noon by the Stilwell Chamber of Commerce Soil Conservation Meeting Will Pe Held in County A series of rural meetings on soil conservation will be held in Adair county starting tonight by the Vocational Agriculture Department and the Soil Conservation Service it has been announced A total of eight meetings are scheduled throughtout the county At each meeting a talk will be given on soil conservation and slides will be shown on what some of the farmers in Adair county are doing Also at each meeting there will be a film allow The first meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7:30 at on 10 of the first fO days of February amounted to 267 inches Rainfall was recorded as Two Stilwell Band Members in Norman for All-State Band Two members of the Stilwell High school band are in Norman today for the 1957 Oklahoma All-State High School Bands being held at the University of Oklahoma this week-end The two members are Enoch Charles Estep who plays the bassoon and Sue Ritchie who plays
