I 1 Mrs. Roosevelt will be the sec- ond woman invited within cry to give the sermon, 1 0 11: ral The Sunday School Lesson for Dec. 17, 1950, is "Victorious Daily II Corinthians through all the cordage of the British navy, so the strain of sacrifice ran through all of Paul's service. He declared, ''Iror me to live is Christ," SACRIFICE AND SERVICE Here is his own record of the cost he paid, and paid gladly, for the privilege of service to Jesus Christ: "Of the Jews five 'times received I 40 stripes save one.

Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I atoned. thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have been in the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils from my countrymen, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils In the city, In perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren: in labor and travel, in watching often, In hunger and thirst, in fasting often, in hunger and nakedness. Besides these things that are without, there is that which presseth upon me daily, anxiety for all the churches." Can anyone deny this man the appellation of hero? In addition to this life of tremendous activity and unbelievable sacrifice, it is well to bear in mind that. Paul had one of the best brains that has ever fertilized human thought Scores of millions of persons ponder his written words each week. 1 This man who touched his time at its best and served its highest need summons the aspiring spirit of every age to the service of Jesus Christ.

He lived a large life for the whole world. By surrender- ,1 ing his powers to a great Cause and a great Master he became one of history's few immortal and real leaders. Southampton Calls Kentucky Pastor The congregation of Southhampton Presbyterian Church, Nottingham and Macklind avenues. has 1 asked the Rev. Barney Ellis Maclean of Danville, to be their new pastor, the Rev.

Dr. Sidney Blair Harry, presbyter of the St. Louis. Presbytery, announced yesterday. Rev.

Maclean, pastor of the Sec- ond Presbyterian Church at Dan- ville, is chairman of the Natioilal Missions Committee of the Kentucky Synod. He is a graduate of Louisville Theological Seminary and Davidson College: He succeeds the Rev. Dr. William 4. Murdoch, pastor for 30 years, who has resigned to organize St.

Andrew's Church in southwest St. Louis. Church School to Be Open for Inspection An 11-room stucco residence at 1333 West Lockwood Groves, recently purchased as a church school by the Webster Hills Methodist Church, will be on display tomorrow at an open house from 2 to 4 p. m. and from 5 to 7 p.

m. The building. situated on a three-acre tract, is across from the churcb. at Berry road and Religion periods bt prayers for peace sponsored by the Wilmington monthly meting of the Society of Friends (Quakers), which invited the general public to gather at its meeting house for devotions. Many church groups have joined in petitioning President Truman to proclaim a national day of prayer.

Members of the three faiths have responded to special calls for prayer initiated by civic officials in leading centers throughout' the country. In Memphis, churches and synagogues kept their doors open throughout the day in response to a proclamation by Mayor Watkins Overton, who urged citizens of all denominations to offer petitions "for the future of our nation, and of the world we know." In Grand Rapids, more than a dozen religious groups supported Mayor Paul G. Goebel in designating Friday, Dec. 15, as a 1 day of prayer. Other community- wide days of prayer were held in I Fort Worth, Tex.Columbia, S.

and Chattanooga; where Christmas, shoppers and downtown workers joined in prayers led by ministers and laymen from a dozen of the city's; leading churches. VIGIL FOR PEACE In Chicago, an 11-hour "prayer vigil for peace" led by clergymen of a dozen denominations was held in the Chicago Temple, while in Sacramento, a month-long prayer for peace program was inaugurated under the auspices of the Sacramento Ministerial Association. The Sacramento program was similar to one started in mid-August with radio stations and, public address systems in two downtown parks broadcasting organ music and prayers at noon daily. Newspapers and radio stations have echoed the appeals for prayer to meet the challenges now confronting the United States and the world at large. Radio's part in the nation-wide prayer movement was highlighted by the ready response of a network to the suggestion of 13-yearold Linda Keller of Hyattsville, Md.

that a prayer be offered on radio stations each noon for I American servicemen in Korea. 1 The Armed Forces Chaplains Board is co-operating in furnish1 ing Army. Navy and Air Force chaplains to deliver the prayers which are recorded and broadcast over 200 or more stations on the network each day. One prominent newspaper which Is actively co-operating in the prayer crusade is the Nashville, Banner, which is carrying short, front-page editorials urging readers to devote themselves to daily prayer. "Devote at least a 'moment to prayer.

every day at noon." said one editorial. 'Pray for delivery from the threat of Communism which overshadows'the world; for wisdom and strength to meet this I challenge and overcome it. M. The Rev. Geo. H. Easter; no let- Goo- JEL Eastor This mid-century Christmas a season finds Americans in one of the most prayerful moods in their history.

Stimulated by the Korean war and the increasingly critical world situation, calls for prayer on behalf of peace are resounding from one end of the nation to the other. Exhortations to prayer for a divine intercession and guidance have come not only from church bodies, but also from civic au: thorities and secular leaders in every section of the country. Even business firms have joined a in the national prayer crusade. In a Raleigh. N.

the Seaboard Air Railway shops and the Buckeye Cotton Oil Company are blowing factory whistles at 9 a. m. each day, signifying a brief period of prayer throughout the city in the interest of world peace. Both Protestant and Roman Catholic groups are holding special. peace prayer services and observances in many areas.

This week American Catholics, in unison with co-religionists all over the world. will begin pre- Christmas novenas, or nine-day periods of prayer, for peace. The novenas are being made in response to a plea by Pope Pius XII urging Catholics to invoke God for "concord among In North Carolina, meanwhile, the Baptist State Convention has designated Dec. 31 as a special day of prayer and repentance on behalf of world peace. Leaders of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church have issued at call to co-religionists throughout the world for a special crusade of prayer for divine intervention in the ipresent crisis.

Similar appeals have come from the Council of Bishops' of the Methodist Church, which held its semi-annual meeting in New York, and the General Department of United Church of the National Council of Churches. Lafayette -ill. I 1 1 kr. Lafayette and Mississippi Ayes. 0.

a young mother's concern for "our children and the whole world" touched off an area-wide prayer appeal under the auspices of the Council of Churches of Buffalo and Erie County. "It seems to me," wrote the woman, mother of two small children and wife of a World War II veteran. "that if everyone prays for peace and divine guide something is bound to hap' pen. Many miracles have come through prayer."
