The U. S. district attorney's office has sanctioned the scheme as a means of combatting the copper shortage. Made of light cardboard and about the size of a postage stamp, the "paper pennies" will have a on one side and an inscription designed to foil counterfeiters on the other. There remain several details to be worked out for instance, how to get a parking meter to accept the ersatz coin, also, perhaps, how to convince junior they are legal tender.

The pennies will be sold at no discount by the Merchants Bureau to stores and individuals and the real money so obtained will be placed in a redemption fund. Hen, Women Differ In Alabama Regarding Abolition Of Poll Tax Women's Division Head Says Her Group In Favor Of Removing This Levy BY CARROLL KILPATRICK Special Washington Correspondent! For The Birmingham News WASHINGTON A sharp difference of opinion between the men division and the women division of the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee was revealed Monday when Senator Barkley Ky.l read the Senate excerpts from a letter endorsing the Pepper anti-poll tax bill from Mrs.

Albert Thomas, of Auburn, a member of the womens division of the committee. Her statement was directly opposite that made recently by Gessner McCorvey, of Mobile, chairman of the state Democratic committee, who denounced the attempt to pass the Pepper anti-poll tax measure. Senator Barkley also read a letter endorsing the Pepper bill from Mrs. Harvey Emerson, of Birmingham, legislative chairman of the Alabama division of the American Association of University Women. I ant writing to thank you for your sustained and brilliant fight to carry the anti-poll tax bill," Mrs.

Thomas wrote. The great majority of the citizens of the South support you in this fight, and they will continue to support you even to the point of invoking the cloture rule to control this situation. For 10 years we have been trying to change this undemocratic law in Alabama. We urge you to continue the fight in the name of democracy." Mrs. Emerson wrote that we are wishing you and Senator Pepper every success in the passage of this legislation.

She said many of us in the South are in favor of the bill to abolish the poll tax. The Montevallo branch of the American Association of University Women took a written ballot on the poll tax recently, Mrs. Emerson said. Twenty-nine stated that the question was' very important, five that it was not. Two wanted the poll tax as it now stands in Alabama, two wanted state reform, five wanted abolition by state action, 19 wanted abolition of the poll ROOFING 37 CALL us for free estimates, roofing, siding, rock wool insulation.

(P)-The short-lived escape of four young Nazi soldiers from a prison carrying them to internment Wednesday produced strangely contradictory views on the fortunes of Marshal Erwin Rommels Afrika Corps. The four, all former members of the German desert army and captured during the fighting around El Alamein last July, slipped through a window of the train Tuesday night as it wound slowly through Altamont Pass, 30 miles east of here. By dawn Wednesday all four had been recaptured. The identity of two never was disclosed.
