Yet if we have learned all this at the expense of forgetting the difference between right and wrong, our knowledge is no more than a blueprint of chaos. The blast of an atomic bomb, which exemplifies complete disintegration, will be a fitting end to our civilization.

One might say with justification that this is a view of morality which is true as far as it goes but which offers little of benefit Any such criticism would certainly be valid. but-on the other hand the Psalmist presents his system. primitive as it is.

in the only terms in which morality-has meaningas an absolute system of right and wrong. 1VEAKENED TEACHING I In this respect he is far ahead of our present-day refined but ineffective moral teaching. Things are right or wrong only in relation to the person who does them, says the modern moralist Drink! ing is wrong only when it does harm to the drinker; unchastity is wrong only if it has a bad effect upon the unchaste person or anyone connected with him: dishonesty is a relative matter. and its standards are determined not i by absolute criteria but by the particular society in which one one's self. According such a philosophy of life, morality is another word for custom.

It changes as fashions change and has no more sacred meaning than the little daily mannerisms by which we become normal members of so1 elegy. This view of morality is particularly devasting to the stand. ards of any civilization. Since it lowers morality to the level of convenience, there is obviously no reason to be moral if it entails the 'slightest sacrifice. DOUGLASS Nobody denies that a glaring aspect of the post-war civilization the whole world around has been its flagrant flouting of the old Christian standards of conduct and of personal responsibility. "Do as you please. expresa yourself." has been the accepted rule of conduct The four Rs of a truly civilized lifeReticence. Refinement Reverence and Religionhave been thrown into the discard. Flamboyant selfishness has had the' right of way.

The Ten rent have ppenly been scorned as out of date. Chastity has been considered no longer sacred and binding in the lives of myriads. Plain honesty has been conspicuously lacking in high business circles. A lie is considered a social convenience. The Sabbath Dan has been widely and rapidly Intemperance and divorce have become fairly fashionable.

Pleasure has been made thei chief end -of men and woman. Carcass coddling is more common than concern for one's soul. Honor and the sanctity of the pledged word have largely disappeared from the relations between many nations. Public worship has -declined or become perfunctory. Verily.

we have been giving the devil his due and denying God His due. BIBLE STANDARDS These conditions are not peculiar to the modern world. although they appear today in a ly aggravated form. Even Gods chosen people. the Israelites.
