52 Friday, July 30, 2010 DAILY NEWS NYDailyNews.com vulnerability. 7, 11,12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 27, 28, 29,37, 38 J.N. SMASH HIS CAMERA. (PG-13). There's no denying that paparazzo Ron Galella is a New York character; what's at issue in Leon Gast's entertaining documentary is whether he's an artist, or a creep.

6 EW. THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE. (PG). As a Manhattan wizard and the NYU student who helps him conquer evil, Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel make a good team odd and odder and Alfred Molina is their stylish villain. 11, 12,13, SPOKEN WORD.

(NR). A poet and teacher leaves California for his New Mexico hometown and a visit THE LAST AIRBENDER. (PG). M. Night Shyamalan's latest mediocre movie is an action adventure about a boy who can control the elements in order to bring peace to ancient nations.

Despite a Zen calm, chintzy effects, lumbering storytelling and an overstylized incompetence rules the day here. 12, 13, 19, 28 PLEASE GIVE. (R). A wonderful Catherine Keener anchors Nicole Holofcener's perceptive dramedy, about the relationships between several Manhattan friends and neighbors (including Amanda Peet, Rebecca Hall, and Oliver Piatt). 16 E.W.

PREDATORS. (R). This latest installment of the horror franchise finds a group of strangers, led by Adrien Brody, being hunted for sport by the titular dreadlocked slayers on an alien world. 1, 12, 28 Excellent Great Good Take your chances Skip it Numbers following movie capsules are keyed to Manhattan theaters only. CATS DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE.

(PG-13). Earth's felines and canines join forces to battle an evil hairless cat in a sequel to a 2001 movie no one was waiting for. The James Bond parodies and genre riffs feel at least 20 years past their prime, and children deserve far better entertainment than this flea-bitten mess. 31, 12, 15, 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 38 -Joe Neumaier CHARLIE ST. CLOUD.

(PG-13). If Zac Efron hadn't signed on, this sappy spiritual fantasy about a young man mourning his brother's death would certainly have skipped the cineplex altogether, for eternal rotation on cable. Instead, Efron's committed performance is the movie's saving grace. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 27, 35, 37 -Elizabeth Weitzman COCO CHANEL IGOR STRAVINSKY. (R).

The most interesting elements of this fictionalized biopic have nothing to do with the central romance, which is oddly flat. Thanks to a fine turn from Anna Mouglalis it's Chanel's movie from first to last and when the focus is on her, it's a success. 16, 33 E.W. COUNTDOWN TO ZERO. (NR).

Chilling, can't-look-away documentary about the ongoing threat of nuclear attack breaks down the way the world could end into "accident," "miscalculation" or "madness." There are suggestions to help us sleep easy, but the point is to wake us up. 1, 2 J.N. CYRUS. (R). As a guy who has issues with his new girlfriend's grown son, John C.

Reilly is a terrifically doughy everyman, while Jonah Hill adds depth to his big-guy vacant stare. 19, 26 J.N. DESPICABLE ME. (PG). Thanks in large part to terrific voicework from Steve Carell, Russell Brand, and Kristen Wiig, this 3-D animated comedy about a soft-hearted villain has just enough edge to amuse all ages.

12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 35, 37 -EW. DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS. V2 (PG-13). An ambitious worker (Paul Rudd) must bring a doofus (Steve Carell) to his boss's monthly gathering that's secretly a biggest-loser contest. Lots of eccentricity handled with a chuckle-inducing deadpan, and if some of it seems lazy, it's often very funny.

1, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 27, 28, 29, 33, 34 THE DRY LAND. (R). A strong central turn from Ryan O'Nan is the primary draw in this sensitive, but overly familiar, drama about a traumatized soldier returning home from Iraq. 1, 19 E.W. THE EXTRA MAN.

(R). Though it's missing the insights of Jonathan Ames' comic novel, Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's lightweight adaptation does have an endearing eccentricity. Best of all is Paul Dano, as a timid New Yorker who finds a mentor in social climber Kevin Kline. 2,35 E.W. GET LOW.

(PG-13). As a hermit who wants to holds his own funeral in 1930s Tennessee, Robert Duvall is a marvel, and he's beautifully aided by Bill Murray (as a huckster funeral director) and Sissy Spacek (as a lovely country spinster). Movies as great as this one, from director Aaron Schneider, are as hard to find as a recluse in the woods, so catch it. 19, 25 THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE. (R).

The second entry in Stieg Larsson's best-selling Swedish trilogy finds his punk heroine on the run and, frustratingly, separated from her crime-solving partner. 2, 25, 34, 35 E.W. GROWN UPS. (PG-13). Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Kevin James are clearly old-school buds who enjoy hanging out, but this lumbering, only fitfully funny pic about a bunch of high school pals reunited 30 years later is like the definition of "guess you had to be there." 12, 13, 19 HELEN.

(R). As a woman grappling with severe depression, Ashley Judd wails, crumples, flails and rages while "Helen" becomes tiresome. There are intense emotional waters here, but so much ends up feeling shallow. 16 J.N. HUGH HEFNER: PLAYBOY, ACTIVIST AND REBEL.

(R). If any life story should make for a compelling biography, it's certainly Hugh Hefner's. But this love letter to the Playboy publisher is so lacking in any edge, the end result is not just unsexy, but unforgivably staid. 2 E.W. I AM LOVE.

(R). Tilda Swinton impresses again in this sumptuously old-fashioned melodrama, speaking fluent Italian as a traditional Milanese matriarch who finds her roles as wife and mother are no longer enough. 10, 25, 35 INCEPTION. (PG-13). No synopsis could possibly do justice to the elaborate sci-fi fantasy director Christopher Nolan fashions, as he sends us and futuristic dream thieves Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page deep into the recesses of the human mind.

1, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, 31, 37 E.W. JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK. (R). You think you've got a strong work ethic? We'll talk after you've seen this enlightening tribute to professional perseverance. Too many areas of Rivers' personal life are left unexplored, but you won't find a better portrait of self-generated stardom.

16, 32 E.W. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. (R). The story of a family both as unique and as ordinary as any other, this lovely, perceptive comic drama in which Julianne Moore and Annette Bening play lesbian mothers blindsided when sperm donor Mark Ruffalo shows up is a movie for everyone. And, in one way or another, about everyone, too.

1, 7, 14, 15, 18, 25, 31, 39 KNIGHT AND DAY. (PG-13). Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz work overtime to entertain in James Mangold's action comedy, about a charismatic spy and his willing hostage. 1, 26 E.W. RAMONAANDBEEZUS.

-k-kVi (G). You won't find Beverly Cleary's edge in this breezy, somewhat bland adaptation of her beloved children's novels. But her third-grade troublemaker (Joey King) is here, along with a perpetually annoyed older sister (Selena Gomez) and remarkably patient parents (Bridget Moynahan and standout John Corbett). 1, 18, 19, 26, 29, RESTREPO. (NR).

A documentary following an American platoon in Afghanistan that captures the feel of war without forcing a point of view on us. Directed by Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger. 2, 5 J.N. SALT. (PG-13).

Fast-moving, exciting, and with a zillion twists, this thriller about a U.S. spy (Angelina Jolie) accused of being a sleeper agent for Russia benefits from an old-school, nuts-and-bolts action style. Jolie, imminently watchable, does what she does best: toughness with a cache of hidden with this dying dad. A few too many obvious notes, but always-good Ruben Blades, as the father, manages to find a meditative note. 32 J.N.

TOY STORY 3. (G). The poetic, beautiful end to Pixar's parable of living playthings finds Woody, Buzz and the rest of Andy's toys facing donation to a day care center. With big feelings, witty excitement and astounding 3-D, the filmmakers take our breath away. 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 26, 27, 28, 35, 37 THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE.

(PG-13). Romance and suspense propel David Slade's fast-paced entry into Stephenie Meyer's popular vampire franchise. Will Bella (Kristen Stewart) choose undead Edward (Robert Pattinson) or loyal Jacob (standout Taylor Lautner)? 1, 12, 15, 19, 27 E.W. WHO KILLED NANCY? (NR). A spiky, but cluttered documentary re-examining the murder of Nancy Spungen at the Chelsea Hotel and the drug overdose of Sid Vicious not long after.

Too many viewpoints, though the colorful anecdotes are priceless. 6 J.N. 10.30, 12.15.(SUN) 11.45, 1.15, 2.30, 4, 5.15, 6.45, 8, 9.30, 10.30.The Sorcerer's Apprentice (PG) (FRI, SAT) 10.30, 12.45, 3.30.(SUN) 12.45, 3.30.Toy Story 3 in Disney Digital 3D (G) (FRI-SUN) 10.10, 12.45, 3.15, 5.45, 8.15, 10.45. 12.
