n'rnrrr'M rr in Tyfwy'rW 'ft Sunday, Sept. 20. 1992, Spokane, Wash. THE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW C7 COLLEGE FOOTBALL USC upsets No. 1 3 Oklahoma Figueira passes Pirates past E.

Oregon, 19-16 Associated Press The Southern Cal team that showed up Saturday didnt look anything like a team that hadnt won in nearly a year. The visiting Trojans, winless since last Oct. 12 when they beat Washington State, overcame a 10-0 deficit in the final quarter to upset No. 13 Oklahoma 20-10 and finally give Coach Larry Smith reason to smile. This was a big, big, big win for our football team, said Smith, who saw the Trojans (1-0-1) PAC-IO From stiff and wire reports Before Saturdays season opener against Eastern Oregon State College, Whitworth football coach Shorty Bennett was concerned about his offense.

Bennett and the Pirates still have work to do on their running game, but their aerial attack seems in place. Whitworth quarterback Danny Figueira passed for 314 yards and three scores to lead the Pirates to a 19-16 Columbia Football Association non-divisional victory over the Mountaineers in La Grande, Ore. The victory helped Whitworth atone for a 63-20 loss to EOSC in Spokane a year ago. Whitworth scored all its points in the final 6:07 to overcome a 16-0 EOSC lead. The Mountaineers held the Pirates to minus 14 yards rushing.

Whitworth also tumeed the ball over seven times, with three of those leading to all EOSCs points. But with the game winding down, Figueira and the Pirates put together an impressive fourth-quarter rally aided by Mountaineer miscues. With just over eight minutes to play, the Pirates took over on their own 20. Figueira (23-of-34 passing, 314 yards, 2 interceptions) completed 8 of 10 passes on the drive, culminating with an 1 1-yard toss to running back Tony Doughty for the TD. A two-point conversion try failed.

Eastern Oregon recovered an on-side kick, but Mountaineer quarterback Scott Helmick fumbled on the third play. Janot Bartron recovered for the Pirates on the Whitworth 32. Figueira hit Clayton Coliton with a 22-yard pass to the EOSC 46. Two plays later, Figueira connected with Coliton again, this time on a 42-yard scoring strike with 3:31 to play. Nils Almelid booted the extra point.

SMALL COLLEGES Eastern started the next possession from its own 20 and fumbled on the first play. Jeff Johnsons recovery gave the Pirates the ball 20 yards from victory. Figueira hit quickly again, throwing 14 yards to Jason Tobeck on the first play and 6 yards to Steve Haug for another touchdown on the second Almelids kick failed. I told them after the tie that we were a better football team than we showed; all we needed was a big win.

We got it today against a good Oklahoma football team." They did it with big fourth-quarter plays by Chirtis Conway on offense and Stephon Pace on defense. Conway caught a 51 -yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to bring the Trojans within 10-7, and Pace returned a fumble 19 yards for the go-ahead score later on. Nobody gave us any respect. I thought some of the calls were a little wishy-washy, said Nebraska I-back Derek Brown, who led all rushers with 84 yards on 16 carries. Some could have gone a little differently. But just as UW wasnt buried when it fell behind 21-9 a year ago, the Huskers werent done this time. They opened the second half with a smart, steady 80-yard march including a 32-yard burst by Brown on the option and a pair of third-down completions by Grant, who capped the drive with a 1-yard sneak.

The Nebraska defense then stiffened to force a Husky punt and the Huskers got set to march again. Only this time the option burned Nebraska. Grant made a wild pitch that hit Brown in the right elbow and left the ball on the carpet to be scooped up by Farr. The Huskies actually lost five yards on the ensuing possession, but Hanson booted a 42-yard field his other was from 32 and UWs defense would allow just one more first down, the rest of the way. Id say this is sort of an answer (to the recent criticism of UWs defensive line), said nose tackle Mike Lustyk.

People have been comparing us vs. the one that won two Rose Bowls, but those guys are gone and I think we can be a pretty good defense in our own right. Now there are more questions about the offense, which struggled to put together 335 yards and must find an effective rotation at tailback. Kaufman led Husky rushers with 57 yards, while Bryant carried nine times for just 19 yards. At quarterback, Hobert hit 10 of 19 passes for 155 yards, while Brunell was 3 of 3 for 27 yards.

The 3-0 Huskies get a week off before returning to Pac-10 action Oct. 3 at home against USC. Huskies But not until the defense had staked them to a lead. It was Nebraskas first turnover a fumble by Grant that James Clif-fofd recovered that produced the first major momentum swing. Washington took over on the Huskers 39-yard line and scored in seven plays, with tailback Beno Bryant celebrating his first action of 1992 with a 1-yard plunge for the touchdown.

Nebraskas move was a bit more dramatic. Looking at third down inside their own 30, the Huskers silenced the defeaning noise in Husky Stadium by springing backup I-back Calvin Jones loose for a 73-yard touchdown romp on an option pitch. This time the offense had an answer. With Mark Brunell subbing at quarterback Hobert had exited just before Bryants TD run with a pinched nerve in his neck the Huskies marched 80 yards and ate up nearly six minutes with a scoring drive that culminated in Napoleon Kaufmans 1-yard run. And when Walter Bailey stepped in front of Trumane Bell to intercept a Grant pass on the very next snap, Hobert returned to put UW up 23-7 at the half with a 29-yard touchdown toss to Joe Kralik who made a sliding catch in the back of the end zone that was loudly disputed by the Huskers.

Kralik got his right knee down in bounds, but didnt appear to have possession of the ball before sliding out of bounds. Im the last person to ask, shrugged Kralik. Im just looking at the ball in that situation. Ask somebody who was standing their looking. But I think I was in.

It wasnt the only impact the referees had on this night. The Huskers were nailed with 11 flags that cost them 76 yards in penalties. One brought back a 33-yard punt return; SACRED HEART MEDICAL CENTER 1011 Cancer 1012 Heart Circulation 1013 Men's Health 1014 Pediatrics 1015 Sexually Transmitted Disease 1016 Womens Health 5757 Community Calendar SENIOR HEALTH CONNECTIONS Sponsored In Spokane By I Index Line I Divorce in Washington State Child Support Community Property I Marriage I Parenting Plans i Domestic Violence I Adoption Bankruptcy Small Claims Alternatives to Court Lawyers and Legal Fees (Parti) 1 Lawyers and Legal Fees (Part 2) 2 Reasons for Having a Will 3 Trusts 4 Probate 5 Criminal Law 6 Lawyer-Client Relations 7 Malpractice 8 Tenant Rights (Part 1) 9 Tenant Rights (Part 2) 0 Public Assistance 1 Employment Rights 2 Real Estate 3 Other Consumer or Legal Aids 4 AIDS SHMC SACRED HEART MEDICAL CENTER The following directories are available 9001 The Brain 9002 The Bones and Joints 9003 The Circulation 9004 The Ears i Call 765-8811 SPOKANE ft xxkLxit A.A. ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft i kftft.ft XLAAa ft.ft ft-ft.
