'Norwegian So Dumb That Swede Has Role' HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 16 (A3) Excerpts from a letter from Charlie McCarthy: There is an ugly rumor going around that Bergen has Turned legitimate and that I am through. They also say Ive worried myself so thin I can sleep in a pencil sharpener. Let me say Im enjoying dandy health and am as happy as the day I killed my first woodpecker. Now as for Bergens acting, thats a long story and a dirty one.

Some say its out of this world. I say keep it there. However, it is true that he is doing a straight role in I Remember Mama. He was chosen to play the dopey Norwegian undertaker after it was turned down by every other actor. I understand the part calls for such a dumb Norwegian they had to get a Swede to play it.

Next on the schedule of the four major dowptown theaters are four pictures that have been given excellent rating by drama critics The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, coming to the Empire; The Romance of Rosy Ridge, opening Thursday at the Alabama; Living in a Big Way, coming to the Melba. and Pursued, coming to the Ritz.

Perhaps the most widely-publicized is The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, a gay comedy with a star cast, booked by the Empire. Shirley Temple and Cary Grant have the title parts, and Myrna Loy is also starred. The supporting cast includes Rudy Vallee, Ray Collins, Jack Of All Trades Sometimes, as Dan Dailey talks. Film Producer Sees Montalban As New Valentino HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 16 (JP Ricardo Montalban is on his way up in the movit world.

Jack Cummings, an up-and-Cummings young producer, says so. Cummings is the guiding genius behind Montalbans sudden success. And he is very happily basking in the reflected glory of his protege. Thats the way producers work. Glory makes the star; boxoffice makes the producer.

Both are happy. Pleased with his work in Fiesta. Cummings now wants Montalban to star in a movie Cummings bas yearned for years to make. Ive waited a long time for the right man to come along, says Cummings. Montalban is the first Ive seen who could really do justice to the story of kapata, the Pancho Villa of Southern Mexico.

Zapata and Villa were contemporary and almost parallel figures. But, says Cummings, with difference. Villa was brigand, and a low class crook. Zapata was a true revolutionary hero. Cummings is sold on his story.

He believes it may be the vehicle to rocket Montalban into the position once occupied by Valentino. But just to make sure Montalban has the proper heart interest, hes going to give him, as his leading lady, Lana Turner. And if Lana seems a little incongruous well, thats HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 16 When Dan Dailey was 14 and the neighborhood kids were shooting the breeze about their ambitions, Dan would look down his nose at the future bankers, presidents, big game hunters and lawyers who lived in bis block. Me? hed say pityingly.

None of that stuff for me. Im going into show business. You think youll make a hundred thousand dollars maybe, but me, Ill make millions! At that time Dan was creeping I up fast on the six feet four he through our mterview eventually turned out to be. He was mostly legs and his face gave very little promise of the rugged handsomeness it later developed. The kids thought he was nuts.

Dan Dailey, who had a pretty plush proposition in the hotel business, spent a lot of time trying to make junior see the light. But junior had a one-track mind and dancing feet, so his advisers got nowhere. i Made It Dans persistence led him through good many vicissitudes before he landed with 20ft Century-Fox playing opposite Betty Grable in Mother Wore Tights. But he now has the situation so well in hand that the studio is planning a star future for him. You seem to be the new curly-haired wonder child, I said to him.

Of course, Mr. Zanuck T'haf 1 Whl arent you awfully cer? qualified, and I noticed he falls back into the vaudeville, the idioms towns, the flavor of show, the honky-tonks, lesque houses across he got his training. The Dailey family have forgiven their black sheep who couldnt see the hotel business for dust Dans brother heads the Hotel Roosevejt in New York now. Thats the job Dan, had in mind for Hollywoods newest star. Dan has a well-balanced plan for his motion picture future. He made good as an actor, so he only wants to make one musical a year, playing straight roles the rest of the time. Betty Grable, who says he's terrific, would ask nothing bet- be sick, or fail to show up on time, and the first thing you knew Id be reading BETTY ORABLE lines.

Mortgages ran to $8,500,000,000. or 15 per cent of total farm values. Some farms, purchased on a shoestring, were almost full mortgaged, and easy pickings for the sheriff.

Farm speculation has been relatively moderate this time. Moreover, price supports will rule throughout 1948, which cushions against a drop. At the same time, European needs for American foodstuffs will persist. For the farmers, potential consumers are not the problem. The main problem is dollars: Will Europe get them? IF CONGRESS PROVIDES the funds to implement the Marshall Plan, farmers will continue to be big buyers of agricultural implements, automobiles, refrigerators, housing, and so on.

But ultimately, American agriculture must prepare for a fundamental readjustment, similar to that of the late 20s. As Europe rebuilds its economy, as it begins producing its own foods. U. S. farm exports will drop sharply.

This presents a major problem for the next session of Congress. Here we are asking farmers to increase crop goals so as to feed Europe, knowing full well that these high exports cannot go on forever. Therefore it is only, right and proper to extend price supports beyond 1948. As a war measure, we guaranteed to support prices. Now we must do it as a peace measure.

Meanwhile, theres no denying that farmers are well off. Some moderate drop in prices will not seriously endanger their strong economic position. Indeed, it would tend to cut the cost of living in urban areas, which in turn might diminish demands for wage LYRIC NEWS Alabama prices prevail AT YOUR ENSLEY THEATRES TODAY Light Feet To Heavies It was swell experience, he said. The room was a mile long and all white furniture and all and as I walked down toward 1 his desk I kept telling myself to keep a stiff upper lip. But it was nothing like that. It turned out to be a heart-to-heart talk in which Mr. Mayer told me: Dan, your per-; sonality doesn't match your face. Youre too old for your face, so Ive i got to cast you as a heavy.
