The Bennett Bay Centennial Bridge is the first bridge in the state highway system to be given a formal name by the Idaho Transportation Board, according to a Transportation Department news release. This beautiful bridge, which will be completed in our centennial year, is being named in honor of all the citizens that forged Idahos first 100 years, board chairman Marion Davidson said in the release. Construction was unusual because workers did not build the 227-foot-high bridge from one side of the ravine to the other, as many bridges are built. Instead, they built from the middle of the ravine out. After building each of the bridges concrete pillars, workers began building the roadbed from opposite sides of the pillar, balancing the amount of roadbed on each side of the pillar until it reached roadbed being extended from a neighboring pillar.

Some companies seem to like Lawroskis idea, but are still reluctant to sign on. Hewlett-Packard of Boise said it couldnt commit staff to travel across the state with its exhibit for two months.

Were not going to be able to participate in that, H-P spokesman Mark Falconer said. The logistics just became too difficult for us. Micron Technology meanwhile, isnt sure how to tailor an exhibit for visitors of all ages, which the centennial exhibit figures to attract. So far, weve not committed to participate, said Kipp Bedard, a Micron vice president. I think its a wonderful approach for some companies.

It just didnt fit into our plans for this year. Alter working on the project for some 18 months and making about a dozen trips to Boise to line up exhibits you might think Lawroski would be frustrated by now. He laughs at the suggestion. I dont get frustrated too easily, he said. Associated Press IDAHO FALLS, Idaho Do you think the Idaho Centennial is history? Tell it to Harry Lawroski.

He's chairman of a centennial science and technology display due to open in Idaho Falls on Sept. 11. But he has his work cut out for him. Jt hasnt been easy, said Lawroski, Idaho Falls nuclear power consultant. I think Id be the first to tell you, its not been easy.

With two months to go before opening day, Lawroski still is working on fund raising. He needs $15,000 to $20,000, mostly to hire moving help to set up the 25 or so exhibits at seven shopping malls across the state. And he's still trying to line up exhibits. The project has been postponed once already. Lawroski scheduled the display complete with 35 or more exhibits to tour statewide from April to August.

He concedes hes had problems putting together exhibits. Several companies and agencies have turned him down. 801 Monro Arson suspect agrees to trial COEUR dALENE A man who allegedly set fire to his home then told police he did it to kill himself agreed Thursday to stand trial without having a lower-court judge review the evidence against him. Arley Pollard, 30, waived his right to a preliminary hearing, where a 1st District Court magistrate would decide whether there was enough evidence for him to stand trial. Prosecutors reduced the charge against Pollard from 1st degree arson to 3rd degree arson. Third-degree arson carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison. First-degree arson carries a 20-year maximum sentence.

Unable to post $50,000 bail, Pollard was being held Thursday in the Kootenai County Jail. Prosecutors allege Pollard set fire to his home at 676 Timberline, Rathdrum, early on June 21. The fire damaged furniture inside the home, but was extinguished by firefighters. Klenck is asking for donations from Idaho corporations, businesses and individuals to finance construction of the three-stage, 48,000 square-foot structure. Idaho Hall of Fame has leased 7.7 acres from the city of Payette for the museum.

Klenck and the corporations board of directors hope to break ground by 1991 and open the museum by 1994. Klenck said local companies have promised to supply the lumber and steel for construction. By having the Spirit' of Idaho in Payette, a few miles off Interstate 84, organizers believe it will attract tourists heading to or from Oregon and Washington. Associated Press BOISE Idaho may have a Hall of Fame of its own by 1994, if organizers can raise an estimated $3.5 million. The hall, proposed for Payette on the Oregon border, would honor native sons and daughters, including inventors, athletes, authors, actors, politicians, military heroes and business leaders.

We know all about Idaho, its mining and agriculture. But the things we dont know about are its people, said Dee Klenck of Payette, president of Idaho Hall of Fame Inc. Idahos people have done great things. The proposed museum, tentatively called Spirit of Idaho, would include a audio-video theater with a rest area for travelers. Maries School District to pass an override levy has asked the Kootenai County Property Owners Association to help them organize. Association president Ron Rankin and vice president Hubert Dert-ing will meet with the Benewah County residents at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the Washington Water Power Co. building in St. Maries.

Were getting tired of these levies, said organizer Don Griesel Thursday. We decided we needed to get most of the working people and taxpayers together. The St. Maries School Board has tried twice unsuccessfully to pass a $495,000 supplemental levy. LADIES DAY WED.

At Post Falls the grant will pay for staffing a visitor center designed to direct travelers to camping sites in the state. Other grant money will be used for the construction of an information center in Wallace in association with a new RV park.

In St. Maries the money will be used to buy the historic Hughes house. The forth grant will fund the September construction of restroom facilities at Killarney Lake in Kootenai County. The RV fund which totals over $900,000 this year earns money from RV registration fees. In November a second round of grants will be awarded.

nas. If I were looking for a job, I wouldnt even slow down here if I had to sign something like that. Michael Brubaker, Idaho Education Association staff member in Boise, said the district has no right to make new employees sign anything other than the agreed-upon contract. I think they should sign the contracts because the district is offering them in good faith, he said. But I dont think they can be required to sign a rider.

But Humble said if prospective employees dont sign the addendum, hell have no choice but to offer the jobs to others. If they dont sign, they dont have a job, the superintendent said. So far it hasnt been an issue. Weve issued contracts to about a half-dozen people and no one has said he wouldnt sign. Teachers Under the amended contract, the new employees already will be on notice that their jobs are in jeopardy, allowing the district to make immediate cutbacks if it loses the lawsuit, Humble said.

Without the rider, the district would be required to give teachers 30 days notice before laying them off. Humble expects to issue the special contracts to at least 28 of Bonners 325 teachers 16 who will fill vacant positions and 12 who will be hired for new positions. The union has recommended prospective employees not sign the amended contracts. According to our legal counsel, the addendum is not part of the contract," said union president Ray Sali Ruling in rape case overturned BOISE It must be positively shown that a criminal defendant understands the rights he waives by pleading guilty, the Idaho Court of Appeals says. The court on Thursday overturned a lower court ruling that denied Mardonio Garcia Ayalas request to withdraw his guilty plea to a Gooding County rape charge.

Under our state and federal constitutions, a guilty plea must be made voluntarily, which means knowingly and intelligently as well as free from coercion, the court said. In the Ayala case, the court said the defendant spoke litttle English, even with the help of an interpreter and clearly had difficulty understanding the judge. iffliffiQD TTDLHIl'Fim STRAWBERRIES ARE RIPE OK (AJ) GREEKBMTEE NOW WHATS BUGGING YOU?
