Northwestern and Iowa in the mythical battle-front. After voting battles as close, at most positions, as the scores which decided the championship season's big struggles, two members of last year's all-star "varsity," Halfbacks Don Heap, of Northwestern, and BY JERRY BRYAN Two more days of braising work nd it's journey's end for Birmingham-Southern and Howard gridmen. Coaches of the city colleges warned their men that today and tomorrow there will be no quarter given.

Wednesday the trainers will have their sessions at rubbing out kinks and bruises after light workouts and the lads will be blanketed to wait for the parade call. Fitting enough that the schedules build to one great climax, the annual battle of the city rivals, and Thursday afternoon the Dixie Conference title will ride with the victor. Festivities of varied hue are billed foi the week. Alumni banquets are scheduled by old grads at both schools on Wednesday evening at 6 30 o'clock. Birmingham-Southern will harve their gathering in Students Activity Building, while Howard will hold their get-together at Roebuck Club.

Tuesday night, at 9:30 oclock, a big football jamboree will be presented at WSGN. Tills program covering between 30 minutes and one hour, will feature the coaches, By The Aesociated Preit Howard and Birmingham-Soulh-ern Colleges have met on the gridiron 28 times, and Thursday when they play here the Dixie Conference football title will be at atake for the fifth consecutive year. Twice winners, the champion Howard Bulldogs have emerged from four conference tilts unbeaten and untied. The Panthers bowed to the Lynx of Southwestern, whiclt Howard later trimmed, but have won five contests, to give them a clear percentage margin in event of a win Thursday. Only other conference game tnis week will be the Mereer-Chatta-nooga affray Thanksgiving.

Two other teams see action against nonloop opponents. Mississippi College vs. Stetson and Spring Hill vs. Union. Last week Mississippi College beat Millsaps, 12 to 0 The teams I had played to a scoreless tic earlier in the year.

Southwestern got the title end of a 7 to 6 decision with Centre. Howard and Southern were rated about on a par early in the season, though neither was considered championship calibre. The game is a tossup, for an overwhelming defeat of Spring Hill, a team Howard beat only two touchdowns, overcomes Southern's apparent underrating because of the Southwestern loss. Purdue's Cecil Isbell, again made places on the team. Injuries were largely responsible for three others, sensational Andy Uram, of Minnesota.

and Northwestern's great defensive pair. Quarterback Fred Vanzo and End John Kovatch, yielding their positions. Rugged Jim McDonald, of Ohio State, succeeded Vanzo at quarter. Isbell, last year's honor fullback, moved to Uram's halfback position, and Corby Davis. Indiana's 200-puund powerhouse, key-man of the Hoosier offense, earned Isbell's 1936 post.

Heap did not reach his 1936 offensive stride until midway of the season, but from one end of the campaign to the other, was regarded as the league's sharpest defensive back Purdue failed to fulfill expectations, but Isbell's versatility made the Boilermakers highly dangerous in every game, The coaches liked one whole side of Minnesota's line, naming rangy Ray King, a second team man a year ago: Lou Midler and Francis Twedell to end. tackle and guard jobs, respectively. Bob Lannon. of Iowa, outpointed Chicago's versatile Bob Fitzgerald and Fred Benz, of Wisconsin, in a hot contest for the end post accorded Kovatch last year. Purdue's Marty Schreyer won the other tackle place, his steady work making him a standout at the position in the eyes of the coaches.

The remaining line jobs went to State huskies by margins of a single point over Indiana stars. Ralph Wolf, the Buckeyes' center, beat out George (Sparky) Miller, Indiana- ace place-kicking pivot-man. and Gust Zarnas nipped Jim Sirtosky for the other honor assignment at guard. There were no unanimous choices, I but King and Davis came as close as possible, each receiving nine first team votes, and one secondary bal-j lot. Only Twedell.

football officials of the two schools, alumni leaders, captains, cheering squads and bands. Scrimmages Saturday The two squads were sent through rough scrimmage Saturday, the Panthers taking two hours and 30 minutes in the morning and the Bulldogs working two hours in the afternoon. The coaches are looking to having all players ready to get into the conflict. There will be no weakness on either side by short age in man power due to injury or illness, it now appears. Dopesters have had a busy session of it trying to come to some conclusion as to the probable out- come of the game, but if there ever was a time when the affray stacked up as a true toss-up tt is this year.

There seems to be some feeling that I on the basis of the Southwestern games. Dusting 'Em Off BY ZIPP NEWMAN FOOTBALL came in like a lion and is going out like a cyclone.

Why tinker with the rules when the present rules have furnished upsets from the beginning to the end? The rules must be okeh when they can give as much fun as they have this season to the majority at large. A fair balance must have been leached between the offense and the defense when no section can claim a superiority over another section. California and Pittsburgh came through in great style. The Rose Bowl pressure almost got Fordham They had to stop the clock to keep the jitteries from getting the Rams. The Rams could do everything but pile up a score on Slip Madigan's Gaels from St.

Mary's. California can wait another week before inviting a guest to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl party. And it will be wise to wait until after the weeks results are in. Too many things are happening to throw monkey wrenches into conceived notions of what is going to happen before it happens. Santa Clara wants to come back to New Orleans.

Villanova would like to play in the Sugar Bowl game. And no doubt Ford-ham would accept the Sugar Bowl invitation if not invited to Pasadena. Jack Meagher was indirectly responsible for Santa Clara playing in the Sugar Bowl last year. He recommended Santa Clara after the Broncos had shown him the best team Auburn played all last year Today Marine Jack Meagher thinks Villanova is one of the strongest elevens in the country. He rates Villanova as the best team Auburn has played all year.

And that 33 to 0 pasting Villa-nova gave Temple should be most convincing. The Sugar Bowlers can take it from Jack Meagher that they would make no mistake Ih inviting Clipper Smith's Villanova Wildcats to New Orleans. The Sugar Bowl will wait until after the Rose Bowl committee and California have invited the Eastern team before announcing its selection. Last year the Sugar Bowl had the finest of all the bowl attractions in L. S.

U. and Santa Clara. Pittsburgh, almost ready to accept the Sugar Bowl bid, was Washingtons pick in a surprise selection. It turned out very well for the Panthers. They licked Washington.

There isnt an impressive long list of bowl eligibles this year. Upsets have cut the field of undefeated and untied to a mere shadow and the season isnt over for some of the teams still in the bow running. Georgia. Princeton, Harvard and T. C.

U. broke the boys of picking sure things last Saturday. Georgia looked like a very-fine football team in coming out with a scoreless tie against Auburn. An unfortunate penalty prevented Auburn from winning the game in the fourth period. Kenmore raced around right end for a marker but a rule infraction denied the Tigers the fruit of their labor.

T. C. U.s defeat of Rice wasnt as stunning as Princetons win over the Navy and Harvard's victory over the best Yale team in years. Anything can happen in the Southwest Conference. A feather can bow 1 over a tractor in Texas.

Those Southwest teams are full of dynamite. Quite a few learned that Alabama didn't play a prep team in beating George Washington in the mud and slime at Griffith Stadium. George Washington went out in Arkansas and tied the club that had run Mississippi ragged the week before. And the weather couldn't have been any worse than it w-as in Washington when Alabama collected three touchdowns in a hurry in the second and third periods and called it a beastly day to be out in the weather. Hold everything on the bowl guessing contest.

The bowlers will get around to issuing invitations just as soon as the chips quit falling. 4 4 4 Alabama took its last hard workout today in winding up training for the Vanderbilt game in Nashville Thursday. All of the Crimsons are reported to be in shape except Capt. Leroy Monsky. Monskys ankle injury has been stubborn in responding to treatment Pig Davis, hurt before the Kentucky game, will be ready to give Charley Holm and Johnny Roberts some help at fullback.

Davis is a rugged back, capable of jarring a line The Crimsons could have used him against Tulane and Georgia Tech. The Crimsons have been working hard for the last roundup. A victory means an S. E. C.

title. With a few extra days to prepare for the fine Vanderbilt team the Crimsons should be ready to play their best game of the year. Frank Thomas has used his fastest freshman and red shirt backs in running Vanderbilt plays against the varsity. Alabama must be ready to cope with the fastest backs they have faced with the possible exception of Tennessee's Harp, Wood and Cafego, Vanderbilt's backs have a better line than the Tennessee backs played behind--a line that distinguished itself by playing 60 minutes against L. S.

The Crimsons will take a light workout Tuesday, bunk in Pullmans Tuesday night and leave Birmingham early Wednesday morning for Nashville The Tiders will take their final workout in Dudley Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Alabama-Vanderbilt game was a sellout last week. Scalpers are getting a 10 spot in Nashville for any kind of a reserved seat. 4 4 4 Dont risk more than a sarsaparilla on the outcome of the Georgia-Georgia Tech game Saturday. Georgia looked very, very good against Auburn.

The Bulldogs with a victory over Tulane and a tie with Auburn will be in a fit mood to take out after the Yellow Jackets. Last week one would have gone far out on a limb in declaring that Georgia Tech would beat Georgia. Those who saw Auburn playing a good game and still unable to beat Georgia are now wondering, after seeing Auburn run over Georgia Tech. The dope yardstick isn't worth whose tinkers what in a feud like the Georgia-Georgia Tech battle. In the excitement of the rivalry boys go out and play much better than they do under ordinary circumstances.

Florida beat Georgia. Tech beat Florida. Auburn lanced the Yellow Jackets and yet got only a tie with Georgia. Its a cockeyed football world me hearties. Keep your fingers away from the fire.

4 4 4 N-i Alabama will play two new opponents on its 1938 Oldie schedule The Crimsons have added Southern California and North Carolina State. Howard, Sewanee. Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Tulane. Kentucky and Vanderbilt are the old rivals remaining on the 1938 schedule. South Carolina and George Washington are the, two schools giving away to Southern California and North Carolina State.

North Carolina will play Alabama in either Tuscaloosa or Bir-minham on Oct 8, The Staters are coached by Doc Newton, who succeeded Hunk Anderson. Newton began his coaching career in Birmingham, after quitting baseball as a pitcher. AND YOURE HEADED FOR A PLEASANT EVENING Pos. G. Td.Pat.Fg.Tp.

PlRver, gast California Gets Half Dozen Men On Pacific Team Birmingham's new wrestling star, Ed Meske, who used a single match to start a virtual conflagration of fan comment, tonight faces a tough assignment in his second appearance at City Auditorium. Meske soared to No. 1 spot in local grappling esteem last week with a victory over Rudy Dusek. Fans who had seen Rough Rudy wrestle here years past were surprised at the Meske triumph.

The handsome blond giant from Akron made a smashing hit. So tonight at 8:30 o'clock the Ohio state champion gets i second call to the wars and this time he meets another Dusek. When the clean grapplers take the rough ones to ride it generally is a sign for the bouncing to get rougher and the fisticuffing more furious. So Wally is going in to avenge Rudy. A victory for the Dusek bone-bender would square things up on the ledger of the Dusek four vs.
