So far so good, and, when the results were first announced, everyone was jubilant, for here was a medicine in tablet form which seemed to control the disease. Many had forgotten that the same had been said of iodine when it was first introduced. But, as time went by, symptoms started to return in approximately one-third of the patients receiving thiouracil, particularly when the remedy was discontinued after a year or Subsequently, surgery had to be performed. If this were all, the chemical would still have considerable merit. But then reports of complications filtered into the medical journals.

From 14 to 20 per cent exhibited reactions. some of which were serious. In a few, the white blood cells were affected adversely from two to eight- weeks after taking the drug. If this situation is allowed to continue, follow. For this reason, the product was considered only relatively safe.

The physician found it necessary to watch the patient like a hawk, making frequent laboratory tests. Thus the disadvantages were beginning to outweigh the advantages. This does not mean, however, that the substance should be abandoned entirely. Sometimes a toxic gland has left the victim in such poor health that no one would dare recommend surgery. This is true in oldsters and those in whom the heart is affected severely.

Thiouracil can be employed until the patient improves at which time the decision may be made as to whether or not surgery will be demanded. The same applies to cases where a large inward goiter is pressing upon the wind- pipe or leading to asthma. It is helpful also when previous operations have not alleviated the disorder entirely. In a certain proportion of sufferers iodine is ineffective in controlling the manifestations prior to surgery. This group is known as "iodine-fast" and in the past were looked upon as grave surgical risks.

Tempos Gut Lombardo-le Consob Varieties The burden imposed on each by the nature of their roles is considerable. Dunn; for instance, is cast as a sort of racketeer but a likeable Irishman who is ever so good to his mother. Miss Freeman, on the other band, commands more sympathy in the beginning only to lose much of it by permitting her mother to persuade her that the path of easy virtue is the easy way.

The idea seems to be that It's sort of tit for tat as far as their morals are concerned. The racketeer serves. a prison sentence and the girl suffers and suffers after the baby born of one of those hasty war-time marriages is taken from her by the Juvenile Court. That, the idea seems to be, further, that their romance should be both logical and appealing. Sordid Story Whether it is the latter, Dunn and Miss Freeman again reassert their thespic talents and at least come close to making something fine out of a rather sordid story.

Against some of the same handicaps, supporting players, among them William Marshall, June Durpez and Frank Jenks, help out in that respect. Constance Moore provides most of the features of "Earl Carroll Sketchbook." The famous producer mentioned in the title does not appear either In person or by proxy, but a show is being produced in his name and that's the excuse for the introduction of several new songs of the popular 'variety. Two of the screen's more able funmakers, Edward Everett Horton and Vera Vague, see to it that the musical features are accompanied by ample comedy. Even so, one know what he is searching for is good, and that's something in a Maugham novel. The Isabel which Miss Tierney portrays is more typical. That is to say, Isabel is all evil as she weds a man she does not Jove and continues a sometimes diabolical pursuit of the olne she does, indulging in any sinister action that will serve her purpose. Both the character and Miss Tierney's portrayal conjure memories of her superb performance in "Leave Her to Heaven" and constitute the principal feature the two films have in common. A Little Vague It may be also that the Sophie portrayed by Miss Baxter is typical of what's being discussed here.

Readers of the novel will recall. Sophie as the girl driven by tragedy to the depths of degradation in Parisian brothels. As such, she is certainly a little vague, and Miss Baxter, competent actress though she is, never seems quite to comprehend her. Or maybe she does and the reviewer un-n't un derstand Maughani. Now we come to the really ex- quisite portrayal of the film.
