6 1, 3 1 1 I A 'i'. r.x. l'Ntsi 1 1 kik A 44LY ALLSTATE But Ban Johnhon proved to be a salesman and the deal for the organization of the club went through. Not only did Somers Jr. a lot of money into the Indians' layout: he spent money in behalf of the Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago club i as well.

He was president of the Boston club in 1900 ,1901., It was Somers who engineered coup that brought Napoleon La Joie, greatest of all second basemen; Bill Bernard, star pitcher, and Elmer Flick, great outfielder, to Cleveland from the Athletics when American and National Leagues were fighting over players. The closest any Cleveland club came to winning the pennant under the Somers regimewhich ended in 1918was in 1908, when it finished a half game behind the De-, troit Tigers. Rescue Efforts Fail. The Federal League uprising and reverses in business put Somers' 1 baseball holdings in the hands of a bank a score of years ago, and in spring of 1916 he disposed of club to the late James C. Dunn.

partner, Killoyle, had died in meantime. Ban Johnson tried unsuccessfully to save Somers' club him by soliciting loans from other owners in the circuit. Somers was a part owner of the New Orleans club of the Southern Association and for many years was president of it. He built the present Cleveland League Park, at Sixty-sixth and Lexington avenues. After his losses in baseball he was reported to have recouped his fortunes to an extent in the coal bus1- I.

Surviving him are his widow, 1 orothy, and a daughter, Mrs. W. 'W. Clark. It was Somers who brought the late E.

S. Barnard to Cleveland. He was sporting editor of the Colum' bus Dispatch at the time, and be' came road secretary for the club. He made himself so valuable the first winter that he was put on full-time pay, his contract having called for salary only during the playing season. Barnard became business manager, vice presi' dent and finally president, of the club.

From that he stepped to the presidency of the American League. Arkansas State League. By Assoclatsd Prase. ROgerl. 9: SiIoatfl Springs.

Goslin, another former Brownie with Detroit, is among the leagues first twelve in batting. Walker is in the .300 class and the third of Detroit's regular outfield, Fox, is around .275. Cochrane himself, who is handling the bulk of the catching as well as managing the Tigers, is batting about .280.

His understudy. Hayworth, is near .275. This array of batters will have George Blaeholder to contend with today. George, getting a late start, did not "find himself" until about three weeks ago.
