Outfielders Ray McDavid and Vince Moore, infielder Julio Bruno, catcher Brian Johnson and pitchers Robbie Beckett and Bryce Florie were promoted to the 4fr man winter roster.

McDavid, a 22-year old from San Diego's Claire-mont High, is considered the organization's top prospect, although hes coming off a sub par season in which he batted .270 with 11 homers and 33 stolen bases for Class AA Wichita. Moore, 22, was acquired from Atlanta in the Fred McGriff trade. Moore batted .280 with 20 homers, 87 RBI and 30 stolen bases, dividing his time between Atlanta's Class A Durham squad and the Padres' Class A Rancho Cucamonga team. Beckett, 21, was the Padres' top draft pick in 1990 and will be the bullpen closer either for Wichita or Class AAA Las Vegas next season. Florie, 23, was 118 with Wichita last year.

Bruno, 21, split time with Wichita and Rancho Cucamonga, playing third base. Johnson, 25, had the Pacific Coast League's fifth best bat ting average at .339 for Las Vegas. By putting the six players on the roster, the Padres have protected them from the Rule 5 draft, hich will take place the first week of December To make room for them, several members of the Padres' team in 1993 were bumped off the roster, catcher Kevin Higgins, who was outrighted to Las Vegas; catcher Dan Walters, who became a free agent after clearing waivers, pitcher Rudy Seanez. who was released, and outfielders Jarvis Brown and Darrell Sherman, who were waived Brown was picked up by Atlanta and Sherman was claimed by Colorado COLLEGE FOOTBALL 10:30 a.m. Boston College vs.

We've got guys (Todd Worrell and Jim Gott) who are the stoppers and our starting rotation is fill so I guess Pedro didn't really have a role But he was our most effective guy. no doubt about that" Martinez, 22, was 10 5 with a 2 61 ERA in 65 appear ances last season, mostly setting up save situations for Gott and Worrell He had the best fastball on the team and used it to strike out 119 in 107 innings Without him, the Dodgers' bullpen will rely heavily on Worrell. GotL Roger McDow ell and perhaps unproven top 1993 draff choice Darren Dreifort, and still lacks the quality left hander so badly needed.

I thought I was someone really needed by the Dodgers," Martinez said. Looking at the things I did for the Dodgers, I didn't expect to be traded But this is a business. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to start, which I didn't have with the Dodgers In Montreal. Martinez will get his wish and become a starling pitcher. Expos general manager Dan Duquette said last week he wanted a young arm to replace free-agent veteran starter Dennis Martinez, and he began laying groundwork with Claire during the World Senes and this month's GMs meetings in Florida It is difficult to give up a pitcher pf Pedro Martinez's caliber," Claire But when you're acquiring a 24 year-old second baseman who is one of the real talents of the game today, it helps There were a lot of sleepless nights for both (general managers) before this deal took place.

The deal also broke apart the Dodgers' brother tan dem of Pedro and Ramon Martinez, whose dream of pitching on the same major league team lasted only one season and ended before Class A left hander Jesus Martinez could join his brothers. I had in the Dodgers a friend, a father and a broth er, Pedro Martinez said of Ramon. "I'm going to be really sad not to be with Ramon. I called and told him and he said, 'You got traded? "Im not sure anybody would have bet, following our Cal game or following SC's Arizona game, that these two schools would be playing each other for the championship, UCLA coach Terry Donahue said. I'm not sure I would have bet on it" After a 65 season last year and consecutive losses to Cal and Nebraska to open this season. UCLA found itself the subject of a television feature, based on the fall of its program. The Bruins (7-3, 5-2) won their next seven games, including a 20 point victory over Arizona, the Rose Bowl favorite. Only three teams have qualified for the Rose Bowl after starting the season 0 2, the last being Washington 30 years ago.

After the season we had this year, it would be a tragedy to go 7-4 and not go to the Rose Bowl," UCLA tackle Vaughn Parker said. "Outside people didn't think we had a chance of being in this position. But we knew we were good. An underdog UCLA team tied USC 10- 10 in 1989, surely a victory by the previous standard of ot sw cia-wy is ovantw corywt the Bruins 3-7 record going in. "In the locker room, some seniors were crying, just BASEBALL giving it up, Parker recalled. And we were 3-7 going into that game. You would think, Whats one more game? And it was a tie. They hadn't even lost That when I realized what it meant to the players.

USC lost two of its first three games and three of its first five, then won its final five conference games. Last Saturday, on the day Arizona eliminated itself in a loss to Cal, the Trojans (74. 6-1) ended Washingtons 17-game home winning streak and began looking toward UCLA. Some of us were talking about this last night, USC back TVler Cashman said. "How did this happen? We lost a couple games and thought, there goes out national championship hopes.

still have that Rose Bowl, but it's so far away. Now, it right here. Like UCLA, USC's early season results appeared to be the continuation of an ugly little trend. UCLA hasn't been to a Rose Bowl since the 1985 season. USC since the 1989 season.

In the 23 games leading into its five-game Pac-10 winning stheak this year, USC won 1SB3 eighttimes. That today) game would be for anything other than no hollow pride seemed inconceivable. The confidence of our football team has increased tm Km rt dramatically from where we were to where we are, JJ USC coach John Robinson said. They were confused at wnj times as to why this was happening to us. There was some excess baggage the last couple of years, but 1 think they have gradually come together and they believe In each other.
