Since being called up from the minors after Santiago suffered a broken finger May 30, Walters has had to adjust to the big leagues while filling in for one of the games best at his position. Im not really concerning myself with Benny, Walters said. Hes the best, no doubt about it All I can do is do my job. On Tuesday night Walters did more than that He hit a triple and his first major-league home run to push the Padres to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Houston Astros before 15,749 fans at Jack Murphy Stadium.

The come-from-behind effort marked the 18th time in 31 victories the Padres have overtaken their opponents lead and won. Reliever Pat Clements (2-0) was awarded the victory after pitching a spotless eighth and Mike Maddux earned his first save. Astros reliever Joe Boever (1-3) took the loss. But this night belonged to Walters. Just ask Jimmy Jones, the pitcher who gave up Walters homer.

BLADE-CITIZEN FEMALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Blazers wont win without Porters rules Portland guard a key to success Flanagan bets house on marathon You can denounce San Diego Marathon promoter Lynn Flanagan for not paying her bills, but you cant say she isnt trying. Flanagan, who operates In Motion, a company that puts on running events, has fallen on hard times.

She took over the San Diego Marathon two years ago in an effort to save what was once one of the premier running events in the country. Hassles with city officials prompted the move of the marathon from San Diego to a course that ran through Oceanside and Carlsbad two years ago. Last year, it ran exclusively in Carlsbad. And what does Flanagan have to show for her efforts? Shes $100,000 in debt and has lost her home in the process. She said that 90 percent of the vendors and athletes from last years race have not been paid although the men's and womens race winners did receive new cars worth approximately $21,000 apiece.

What they havent received is the $1,000 prize money they expected to get Ive lost my home because of this, said Flanagan who related that a bank foreclosed on her Cardiff home last month. Despite the many setbacks, Flanagan feels the San Diego Marathon can be a success. Whats more, she hilly intends to make sure everyone is paid. She said she wouldn't be going through all the financial troubles if she didnt think that way. Ive been in business for a long time and Im an honest person, she said.

If we can just hang on and get through this marathon, they will all be paid." Flanagan, who has been the race director of this event for seven years, said that the reason the event has not been a financial success is because of the lack of proper marketing. She feels that problem is solved as she prepares for the next marathon, which will be run in Carlsbad on Jan. 24 Remember, if Flanagan had not decided to take on the project there would be no marathon here. She found an ally here in the city of Carlsbad, which is used to putting on world-class running events such as the Carlsbad 5000. Granted, the marathon is not of the same stature as the 5000, but there is potential for growth.

But first things first This is a make or break year for the marathon, Flanagan said. I firmly believe this marathon can make it I feel it could be one of the top 10 in the country." When Flanagan learned last year that the event would lose money, she had to make some tough decisions. I had two options, she said. I could file for bankruptcy, but I didn't want to do that I feel I have a moral responsibility to do it Or, I could try and raise money through investors who see the value of the marathon. She says there are investors interested, which is one reason why she is moving forward.

I wouldnt put myself though this if I didn't think it would succeed, she said. Had Flanagan filed for Chapter 11, she probably would have her See Scholfield, Page C-5 Ashley Hanson has a 4.36 grade Staff Photo Hayne Palmour point average and will attend the University of North Carolina. A self-starter on and off field By Jesse Bar kin LA Daily News PORTLAND, Ore. Call them the Porter Rules. Asked to explain how the Chicago Bulls could limit Portland Trail Blazers point guard Terry Porter to just seven shots and seven points in Sundays 94-84 triumph in Game 3 of the NBA final, Chicago guard John Paxson made it clear that it certainly wasn't anything he did by himself.

TV: 6 pm, Channel 39. Im trying to get away from a me-versus-Terry thing. Its not a one-on-one matchup. If it was. Im sure he could do some damage, said Paxson, whose Bulls take a 2-1 lead into tonights Game 4 at Memorial Coliseum.

A win tonight would give the Bulls a commanding lead in their best-of-seven series. Paxsons job Sunday was to stay up close so Porter wouldnt bury the jumper, whether he had the ball or not Older and admittedly slower, Paxson then relied on help from the likes of Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant and Bill Cartwright It was up to his teammates to close down the driving lanes and step out on pick and rolls near the top of the key jobs made particularly easy because the Blazers forgot to move without the ball in Game 3. Paxson definitely is not allowing me to come off picks and even their big guys are stepping out so theyre really gearing in on that Porter said. While Arlene was busy undertaking the physical task of giving birth, her husband Greg was out in the hospital hallway on a pay phone frantically attempting to dictate a graduate school paper which was due that evening.

It was in this atmosphere of physical and cerebral pressure on June 10, 1974 that Ashley Hanson was bom in Trenton, Mich. A 4.36 grade point average and a partial athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She will graduate next week 22nd in a class of 459 students. And she has proven throughout her four years as a Falcon that she can handle virtually any obstacle placed in her path. And trainer Gary Jones offered only a little bitty slim chance the 4-year-old will be able to defend his title in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 30. Jones said X-rays Tuesday revealed that Best Pal popped a splint meaning he ruptured the covering of the bone behind the shinbone. The injury is comparable to shin splints in human runners.
