July 7 1992 Business growing in Latin America Business briefing Fortunes NEW YORK (AP) Latin America, once a sinkhole of Third World debt, has emerged as the world's leading breeding ground for billionaires, Forbes magazine said Monday. A surge of private enterprise and foreign investment nearly has tripled the number of Latin Ameri can fortunes on the magazine's annual billionaires list from eight last year to 21. the magazine said. Despite ailing economies.

Japan still is home to the world's wealthiest people, and the United States still has the greatest number of billionaires on the list with 101. But the big story is Latin America, where a spree of fortunes were made in a region that only a few years ago symbolized intractable debt, deprivation and war. and the biggest single export was illicit drugs. The Strip casino closed down at midnight Sunday following more than a year of slow decay traced to the October 1990 opening of the Excalibur. Doors were barred and signs came down Monday morning. The Excalibur killed us," said Chuck Wheeler, the casino's security chief.

The Mirage (which opened in November 1989) hurt a little. Then the Excalibur did it. Wheeler and other employees said the Excalibur took away some of the middle-class gamblers the older casino had relied on. Owner Ed Torres, who opened the Rancho in 1982. was unable to interest prospective buyers in the Strip property, which he had offered to sell for $25 million to $30 million.
