Washington (Special) As Congress enters the final weeks of this session an inventory shows that several major victories and one serious setback for Oklahoma have been recorded The State of Oklahoma is slated to receive approximately $120000000 in federal-aid highway funds during the next three years as a result of the Federal Highway act of 1956 Of this amount an estimated $84000000 in federal funds will go toward construction of the Interstate highway system in Oklahoma with 90 per cent of the total cost to be borne by the federal government More than $35000000 will go for federal aid to primary secondary and urban road systems in Oklahoma The billion dollar Arkansas Basin Development program is now well underwav as a result of the Public Works appropriations bill which has been signed into Jaw A total of $10400000 in new funds was voted for this great basin project during 1956-57 confidently expect greatly increased funds will be forthcoming next year As construction progresses on Eufaula Oolo-gah and Keystone Dams we can expect the entire Second Congressional District to benefit said Congressman Ed Edmondson The House Public Works Committee has approved the bill to provide for the sale of land for cottage sites in Army reservoir areas including Ft Gibson and Tenkiller Lakes and with Senators Monronev and Kerr Ed mondson is working to secure House and Senate action during this session It would do much to expedite recreational development on the lakes Another bill Edmondson introduced to set up a vocational framing program for adult Indians has been approved by the House Interior committee are racing with time in an attempt to get this important measure enacted before adjournment" he said 1 A setback came on the school construction bill which accord- ing to most estimates would have brought $5500000 a year into Oklahoma as federal assistance to school construction but with careful provisions to prevent any Federal control Although there was general agreement in the House that the classroom shortage is a major American problem today the debate was clouded and embittered by arguments over amendments on the segregation question and by other amendments which pitted the states with greater wee1 II and income against the pool'-states In the final voting the school construction bill was defeated by a roll-call vote of 224-194 and action on this grave problem was deferred fur many months are still fighting hard to secure final action to extend the life of the Indian Claims commission which is so important to Indian tribes
