That wont last though. become The SpOKESMAN-ReVEW Douglas wants a cool $35 mil to fight Tyson Sports FROM STAFF AND Digest WIRE REPORTS Schrader crashes, moves to rear; Little finishes 22nd, misses field DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

A crash in the final quarter-mile of Thursdays opening twin 125-mile qualifying race cost Ken Schrader the pole position in the Daytona 500. It was an error in judgment followed by a simple mistake that sent Schrader from the top of the 42-car field to the bottom for Sundays race. The Concord, N.C., driver said he thought he was racing Mark Martin for the victory when, in fact, those two were third and fourth behind winner Geoff Bodine and Harry Gant. Dale Earnhardt won the second race. Coming off the last turn, Schrader slid sideways on the 2.5-mile banked oval and was struck by a car driven by Hut Stricklin.

Schrader was able to drive his Chevrolet Lumina onto pit road and wound up seventh. But what was first thought to be only sheet metal damage turned out to be enough mangled metal to force the team to withdraw the car and go to a backup. Spokane's Chad Little finished 22nd in the first qualifier and missed the lineup for Sundays 500. He earned $1,700. Fehr claims share of lead Rick Fehr, who pressed his wife into service as a caddy, shot a 7-under-par 65 to earn a share of the first-round lead in the Shearson Lehman Hutton Open in La Jolla, Calif.

Fehr and 44-year-old veteran Bob Eastwood, who also shot 65, both played the North course, the shorter and easier of the two Torrey Pines Golf Club layouts used for the tournament. White Sox allowed pitchers Grady Hall and Greg Hibbard to work out at the teams complex. General manager Larry Himes said the White Sox wouldnt start their lockout until today, the first day teams could have held voluntary workouts.

Meanwhile, in New York, negotiators for owners and players again met and tried to reach agreement on a new contract. But there was little progress and Commissioner Fay Vincent said he was extremely pessimistic about reaching a quick end to the lockout. Pitchers and catchers were scheduled to report Thursday, but owners say baseball will not begin until there is a settlement. In Vero Beach, the whistle of the wind through palm trees made the Spring training left out in cold Associated Press VERO BEACH, Fla. The clang of locks and chains replaced the crack of bats and balls as the sounds of spring training Thursday when the owners lockout finally began, closing camps on opening day.

Usually youd be hearing noise right now, players hitting and pitching and joking around, New York Mets coach Bud Harrelson said, surrounded by empty practice fields in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Not today. A few miles down the road from the gleaming complex, Mets pitcher Bob Ojeda tossed to catcher Barry Lyons on a beat-up Little League field. I guess were going back to our roots, Ojeda said.

But its difficult to accomplish what you need to here. What were getting out of this is minimal. Later, Ojeda and some teammates played golf. Its the first annual lockout invitational, he said, and no one knows how many rounds its going to last. All across Florida and Arizona, there were the same sentiments from players, management and fans; uncertainty, disappointment and anger.

The shorter the camp is, the less Ill be able to pitch, said Blaise Ils-ley, a minor leaguer who has been invited to the Houston Astros camp. And I need to be looked at. Id like to get that chance to make an impression. At the California Angels camp in Mesa, two minor league players showed up but found no coaching staff to greet them and left without working out. In Sarasota, however, the Chicago Cougs open By Howie Stalwick Staff writer Washington State, minus the greatest player in school history but still loaded with talented seniors, gets the jump on the areas other college baseball teams when the Cougars open the season tonight at Fresno State.

The Cougars have only practiced outdoors a few times, while the Bulldogs have played seven games (winning four) and are ranked as high as 14th in the national polls. WSU is not ranked, but the Cougars are favored by league coaches to win the Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division for the fourth straight year. The Cougars lost 1988 national player of the year John Olerud and four others to the pros after a 37-20 Washington State University head womens volleyball coach Cindy Fredrick announced that five student athletes have signed letters of intent to attend WSU. They are Carrie Gilley, a 5-11 middle blocker from Davenport (Iowa) North High School; Betty Bartram, a 5-10 outside hitter from Des Moines (Iowa) East High School; Joanne Johnson, a 5-11 middle blocker from Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii; Krista Beightol, a 5-7 setter from Chatfield Senior High School in Littleton, Colorado, and Lisa Yenson, a 5-10 outside hitter from Cypress Creek (Texas) High School. The first college baseball games of the year in the Inland Empire were cancelled when Western Oregon informed Lewis-Clark State that snow and transportation problems in Oregon will prevent the Wolves from coming to Lewiston for a scheduled three-game series this weekend.

baseball season tonight McGwire gets $1.5 million Oaklands Mark McGwire tripled his salary to $1.5 million and Jeff Parrett of the Philadelphia Phillies settled on a one-year contract just before his arbitration hearing was to begin in New York. McGwire, the Athletics first baseman who made $455,000 last season, had been scheduled for a hearing today. He had asked for $1,725,000 in arbitration while the team had been offering $1 million. In 1989, McGwire batted .231 with 33 homers and 95 RBIs. Parrett, who went 12-6 last season, agreed to a one-year contract for $650,000, a raise of $438,000.

Sports people C3 New York Daily News NEW YORK James Buster Douglas is looking for a $35 million payday to get in the ring again with Mike Tyson. Promoter Bob Arum said John Johnson, Douglas manager, told him that was the number he was looking for in a conversation earlier this week. Johnson said he has talked with a number of money men including Arum. We are open to all bids. We are talking some very large numbers, Johnson said.

A lot of people are coming to us with some very attractive offers. Arum said Johnson is also stipulating that a Tyson-Douglas rematch be supervised by the IBF and all officials appointed by that organization. The IBF was the first boxing organization to recognize Douglas as the champ. Besides Arum, Johnson has talked with a group that wants to put the fight in the Ohio State University stadium. He will meet with Mirage Hotel boss Steve Wynn in Columbus on Friday and already has talked to Don King.

King is in a difficult position, Arum said. John is asking for some big money. He (Johnson) is nobodys fool. He may be a country boy, but he is definitely nobodys fool. Johnson said Douglas will not step in the ring again until September.

Thats a definite, he said. James is going to take some time off and enjoy being the champion. Hes earned that. Its apparent that Johnson and Douglas are keeping an open mind as far as the future is concerned. That means although a fight with Tyson would produce mega bucks, they are still not ruling out a fight with Evan-der Holyfield, the heavyweight division's No.

1 contender. Arum said he told Johnson that if a Douglas-Holyfield fight went to purse bid, he would bid $30 million. Arum said that means Douglas could pocket $22.5 million. Thats not exactly chump change. Tyson stashed $20 million believed to be the biggest heavyweight payday when he fought Michael Spinks.

With Arum and other promoters coming out of the woodwork in pursuit of Douglas, where does that leave King? King says he has a contract entitling him to five promotional options on the new champ. Johnson said he met with King for more than an hour on Wednesday. I wouldnt call Don our promoter, Johnson said. I would call him more of our consultant. His contract means nothing to me.

What means more is a mans word. Our deal is about remembering what he (King) has done for James in the past. Douglas said King has been straight with him. He put me in undercards of championship fights even after I hadnt given my best performances, Douglas said. But its apparent that Johnson and Douglas arent happy with what they see as a lack of respect shown by King and Tyson.

The relationship appears to be tenuous, at best. Don King is walking a thin line (with us) and its getting thinner and thinner. Nobody will intimidate me, Johnson said. Don King knows that. He knows me well enough to know that I dont run scared from anybody.

King said he understands Johnson. In the end he believes they can work together. He (Johnson) has to realize that all that glitters is not gold. Johnny has an opportunity to reach out and take advantage of a wonderful opportunity, King said. Im certain hes cognizant of the fact that he didnt get to this point by himself.

I helped subsidize him. Now, Im happy for him. Meanwhile, Douglas said he will fight two more times and then call it quits. Tyson said Im a temporary champion, Douglas said. Hes right, but hes going to get another beating from me.

That will be one of my next two fights, then Im history. Im going to enjoy life. Craig Callan, director of Dodger-town, said 62 players will practice. Reggie Smith, John Roseboro and Steve Boros will be among the minor-league instructors in charge; major-league coaches are not allowed to participate. The Dodgers had planned an early practice all along; the presence, however, of former major leaguers like Glenn Hoffman, Edwin Correa and Steve Davis all non-roster players surely will draw attention from management and labor. Im really caught in the middle of all this, Davis, who pitched for Cleveland last season, said minutes before checking in. Im not trying to take anyones job.

Im just trying to get a job. I dont know about all the details of whats going on, he said. I hope they work it out soon and that everything can get back to normal. Its slower than hell, Dodger-town employee Ger Strachota, testing the outdoor batting cages, said. I cant wait until we get going.

Neither can the fans, many of them upset spring training has been delayed for the first time since 1976 when a lockout lasted three weeks. Im very disappointed, she said.

Bobo Brayton, back for his 29th year as coach of the Cougars, says the defense and speed is better than a year ago. Shortstop Jason King, a California junior college transfer, is being counted on to anchor the infield. I dont know if weve got a lot of power hitters, but weve got a lot of strong hiters alley hitters, Brayton said.

I dont think well be hurt- ing. The Cougars play their first 24 games on the road, though they play in the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston March 1-5. The home opener is March 31 vs. Lewis-Clark State, and WSU opens the league season April 3 at Eastern Washington. And in the mens 3,000, Vandal Bernardo Barrios and the Cougars E.J. Guo should make a run at the NCAA qualifying mark of 8:02.

Heading the womens field will be two former WSU high jumpers, Lissa Gray and Mary Moore, and the Cougars distance ace, Jennifer Robertson. Dario Lozoya, 26, who was on the trailing horse, Brazen Joey, was listed in serious condition Sophomore center Mark Georgeson, a part-time starter at Pepperdine, was listed in serious but stable condition at a hospital with of injuries suffered in a traffic accident.

No gimmicky football 40-yard dash, no assault on the indoor discus record. University of Idaho coach and meet director Mike Keller has opted for a straight college meet format and thinks hes found the right combination for the 6:30 affair tonight at Kibbie Dome.

I had everybody call me this year wanting to throw the discus, the javelin everything short of a cheerleader relay, Keller said. But I think what weve come up with is a Anglers may put their weekend Perch: The Potholes Reservoir is the place to go to load up with good-sized perch. Anglers, Ashing from boats between Medicare Beach and Goose Island in 60 feet of water, have been Ailing Ave-gallon buckets with perch that average 10 inches, according to Dave Meseberg of the Mar-Don Resort. Periodically, an angler catches a perch thats 12 inches or longer. Fishermen also have been Anding perch schools in 30 feet of water in the Lind Coulee.

Both Soda and Long lakes have been producing large numbers of six- to eight-inch perch. Ice on Eloika should be Arm and solid enough to support anglers safely this weekend. Most of the perch are small, running about the same size as those in Soda and Long lakes. Walleyes: Lake Roosevelt and the lower Spokane River are continuing to give up some 16- to 18-inch walleyes. The best place to Ash in the lake is across from the Seven Bays Resort.

Most who Ash the Spokane River have been concentrating their efforts from just below Porcupine Bay nearly to the dam. Steelhead: Steelheaders had poor luck last weekend in both the Clearwater and Snake rivers. Warm weather caused tributaries to rise and pour muddy water into the main stems. The Grande Ronde was muddy and the Snake below its mouth was too murky for good Ashing. The Clearwater also was muddy from the runoff.

However, both the Clearwater and Snake should be in good condition this weekend. The rivers were clearing at mid-week. Ed Schrieber, Idaho Asheries biologist, said anglers averaged 19 hours per steelhead on the lower Clearwater during the week ended Sunday. The average for the Clearwater above OroAno was 42 hours. Biologist Mark Schuck of Dayton said Ashing was slow on the Snake last weekend.

He said anglers in 31 boats between Asotin and the mouth of the Grande Ronde were checked with only three steelhead. Schuck said some of the best Ashing has been in the vicinity of Little Goose Dam. Fishermen have been catching a few steelhead from the Tucannon, Touchet and Walla Walla rivers. The most productive stretch of the Tucannon is from the Marengo area to U.S. Highway 12 bridge.

The lower Touchet and Walla Walla rivers have given up some steelhead. Williams has continued to yield limits of 1 1- to 14-inch rainbows. Few anglers have bothered to Ash Hatch. Shore Ashermen have continued to catch rainbows in the Seven Bays area of Lake Roosevelt. Incidentally, the lake is full.

Ice may be a problem for anglers at Lenore, which has been ice-free most of the winter. Low temperatures this week were causing ice to form on the popular lake. Rocky Ford Creek, a Ay Ashing-only stream north of Moses Lake, will remain ice-free. Water comes from springs and is above SO degrees for the Arst mile or two. Fly Ashers, using eveything from tiny simulations of scuds to outsized leech patterns, have been hooking rainbows and small chinook salmon nearly every day.

The mouth of the Frenchman Hills wasteway may be a good spot to try for large rainbows. Anglers have been hooking trout to 18 inches just below the moving water. Lakes south of Mar-Don Resort are continuing to produce rainbows. They include Corral, Blythe, Heart and Canal. Trout have been hitting in the Lind Coulee just north of Warden Lake.

Trout, Idaho: Ice is on Fernan Lake and could be thick enough this weekend to support anglers safely. The lake has been producing fair to good Ashing for 12-inch-plus rainbows. Its unlikely that Hayden will have enough ice to stop shore Ashermen from plunking for rainbow-cutthroat hybrids. Fishing almost never is fast, but the plunkers have been hooking one or two good-sized trout a day. Some of the best Ashing lately has been on the Spokane River below Post Falls dam, Jeff Smith of the Fins and Feathers shop at Coeur dAlene said.

The river, which will remain open to trout Ashing until the end of this month, has been giving up good-sized rainbow and brown trout. Smith said most anglers are plunking with bait, but a few have been using jigs. The average catch has been two to three Ash a day. Most trout are 14 to 20 inches. However, once in awhile an angler catches a big one.

A rainbow weighing nine pounds was caught recently. Priest Lake continues to produce excellent Ashing for lake trout when the lake is calm enough for anglers to troll "Mack alley. Chinook salmon: Fishing for chinook salmon in Lake Coeur dAlene has been spotty. The lake is still off color. Anglers who put away their ice augers until next winter may get a chance to drill holes through a few inches of ice at some of the regions lakes this weekend.

However, ice probably wont be thick enough at Fourth of July and Sprague lakes and Idahos Fernan Lake for safe ice fishing. Steelheaders likely will see 1 snow on the hillsides adjacent to the Snake and Clearwater rivers. Those who launch boats could have problems retrieving them on FENTON slick ramps if the temperatures ROSKELLEY dont moderate. Both the Snake and Correspondent Clearwater rivers were off color earlier this week, but fisheries biologists predicted the streams will be in fairly good condition this weekend. Trout, Washington: Both Fourth of July and Sprague were ice-free last weekend and water temperatures were above 40 degrees.

Anglers tried to And shelter to get out of 30- to 40-mph winds on Sunday, but many gave up before i noon and went home with a fish or two. The upper end of Fourth of July is likely to be ice-' covered this weekend. In fact, the entire lake could be iced over. Ice at the upper end may be too thick for launching boats and too thin to support anglers safely. Theres a chance that the Harder and public ramps at Sprague will be ice-free.

Sprague is wide open and is usually windier than Fourth of July. Although winds plagued anglers most of last week and last weekend, Ashing was fair to good at both Fourth of July and Sprague. Most of the rainbows anglers caught at Fourth of July were 10 to 16 inches long. Majority of the rainbows taken at Sprague were IS to 16 inches. Ice on Williams and Hatch lakes in the Colville area almost certainly will be thick enough for safe Ashing this weekend.

In fact, it will be thicker the next few days than it has been all winter. ry BUCKLE UP M- WASHINGTON 1-800-BUCK-l-UP 1J 41 tin.
