"I honestly don't think he could have done it to himself," said Randy Allard, Suncrest fire chief and an emergency medical technician who aided Doyle Wheeler. Wheeler, displaying a wound to his left ear, told reporters outside his home Thursday he wouldn't take a lie detector test to verify his story: "I don't believe in polygraphs." But he steadfastly stood by his story that he was shot and left for dead Tuesday by an armed trio of men who said they were punishing him because he testified against former fellow police officer Donovan Jacobs in a race-related murder trial in San Diego. Wheeler told two dozen reporters and photographers who gathered on his front lawn that he believes his assailants were hired by San Diego police officers.

"Why he thinks we are trying to kill him from down here is beyond me," said detective Harry Eastus, a board member of the San Diego Police Officers Association. "That's kind of a long way to carry on a vendetta." Eastus said many of the 1,800 officers in the San Diego department believe Wheeler fabricated the incident. Doyle Wheeler, a three-time Purple Heart recipient, was troubled about having killed in Vietnam and having witnessed the San Ysidro massacre, and that he once attempted suicide. The 14-page report dated March 7, 1986, was written by Dr.

Alan Abrams, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. It is part of a thick file on Wheel- er at the state Workers' Compensation Appeals Board office in San Diego. Abrams was asked to determine Wheeler's mental condition and whether that condition was a direct result of Wheeler's nearly 10 years' work with the San Diego Police Department. Abrams determined the disability "should be considered en- tirely work-related." Wheeler told Abrams he feared he was going insane. "I think about San Ysidro and Vietnam and all the people I've killed," he said.

He said he sometimes drove around aimlessly or spent all day in bed, and had violent nightmares and suicidal thoughts. Abrams diagnosed Wheeler as suffering from major depression and work-related "post-traumatic stress disorder." He said the condition was aggravated by Wheeler's unhappy childhood and his Vietnam duty.
