Perk Gressive, entering, be it educational, cultural andor This area does offer many fine educational institutions of which EWU plays a major role. Spokane has much to offer culturally to which EWU contributes.

It has many fine dining facilities and hotel accommodations, but until EWU became affiliated with the Big Sky Conference, there had been only an occasional Washington State football game to attract visitors. However, WSU (after having the city install new artificial turf, press box and dressing rooms in Albi Stadium), departed Spokane citing poor attendance for the then poor product. EWU picked up the challenge, worked with a very limited athletic budget and made great strides educationally and athletically, as evidenced most recently in the Pac-10 baseball playoffs. With support from local organizations, plus citizen support at the stadium, EWU has the potential to become a perennial top competitor in Big Sky. Athletics play a major role everyday across this great nation.

By keeping EWU in the Big Sky Conference, the university will attract, not only the best scholars to this area, but also allow our top athletes to remain at home where they can keep our (EWU) university growing, and our civic pride high. ANDY KELLY Spokane Student backs EWU athletics The recent news of Eastern possibly leaving the Big Sky Conference has drawn the concern of many students at EWU. The possibilities of leaving the Big Sky will mean some athletes having to stop playing their favorite sport and even the loss of a scholarship. And to the non-athletes, a decrease of activities and events to attend during the year. When talking with some of the students of EWU, some said they would continue their education elsewhere if the sports program discontinued.

1 We have been told that the funding of all of EWU sports has reached outrageous limits for our university, especially football. It seems that we could solve this problem if we evenly distributed our funds throughout all of our sports. This may put an extreme limit on our football team, but wouldnt this be a better solution thep going to the drastic measure of cutting all of our sports out for good? This is a university, and as a student, one of the highlights of the year are watching out talented athletes. Although our past records hasnt been the best, with each year there brings new talent and improvement. So for all the students sake, not just the athletes, lets hope our university thinks twice about our Big Sky sports program and our athletes.

COLLEEN SMALL EWU Student Cheney The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle welcome readers comments. Letters should be no longer than 300 words, but all are subject to condensation. Writers should include their signature, street address and telephone number where they can be reached during normal business hours. Rogers coach teaches values I have waited for someone who was actually at the game to write in defense of the Rogers softball coach so viciously attacked by Ms. Blair.

As usual, without an axe to grind, folks just shake their heads and dont get involved. But all of the eye witnesses I spoke to regard the incident a very low key, very average softball story and the coach's behavior normal, quiet, and above the kind of personal ugliness displayed by this womans letter. I wonder if that woman wishes her brand of vindictivness to become the standard in womens sports? It certainly makes us wonder what happened? Did her team lose the game? And if so does this sort of agitation change the score or help her team to see whats important? Namely, learning the game, becoming physically fit and living with oneself during winning and losing? The coach in question undeniably teaches these values as does all of the sporting program at our local schools. Maybe Blair should learn the basics win or lose, we all grow from experience. SANDRA TOMS Spokane Softball coach defended In reference to the letter about the Rogers softball coach, I also attended the softball game against Rogers and Northwood.

Being a softball player for 20 years, I do know the rules of the game. The umpire involved in the game lost control in the first inning. As for the coach of Rogers yelling 60 feet into the stands for a teacher to take her place while she goes to get the varsity coach is not disrespectful, crude or rude. You do not leave 14- and 15-year-old girls to fend for themselves in a game. As for the reference of her disregard for rules, her being loud, crude and generally revolting, the letter writer is totally out of line.

She is probably one of the top three coaches in frosh softball. At this stage of play, it is not coaching, but teaching. I would suggest you get the rule book, read it, ask questions and understand the rules before you again take pen in hand. RAYMOND EDWARDS Spokane Spokane should support EWU A common thread links the media, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention Center, the City Council and Momentum 89 with the restaurant and hotelmotel associations, and that is the continued growth of Spokane. They should all be jointly and vitally interested in the continuance of Eastern Washington Universitys participation in the Big Sky Conference.

For continued growth it is necessary to attract business and industry. OBrien, the only golf coach in the 19-year history of Kamia-kin High, recently guided the Braves to the State AAA boys title the only State AAA boys championship in school history. OBrien also coached Kamiakin to the 1972 AA wrestling title. Football Idaho coach John L. Smith confirmed what had long been suspected when he announced that Jim Routos and Larry Lev-erett have been forced to quit the Vandals due to injuries. Routos, a junior defensive end, earned All-Big Sky Conference honorable mention each of his two seasons at Idaho.

He suffers from chronic back problems. Leverett, a senior running back, has not played since undergoing major knee surgery after being injured in a 1987 game with Montana. Leverett led the Vandals in rushing that season before he was injured. Smith said both players remain on scholarship. Smith also said he is trying to find another team for star defensive tackle Kord Smith, who was kicked off the Vandals after being involved in a recent altercation.

Kord Smith is Idahos all-time sacks leader, and Coach Smith said he hopes to place Kord with an NCAA Division HI or NAIA school so the senior will be eligible to play next fall. Softball Five Community Colleges of Spokane players have been named to the All-Northern Division teams in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Sasquatch on the first team include sophomore first baseman Donna Boyd, freshman designated hitter Stacey Walker, sophomore outfielder Rosanna Bostrom and freshman outfielder Desiree Buch. Sophomore third baseman Kris Wells represents Spokane on the second team. Baseball Former Spokane Indians pitcher Saul Soltero earned a promotion the other day, and for good reason.

After all, Soltero hadnt given up a run all season. Soltero, the former slowpitch softball catcher and junior college basketball player, made 15 shutout relief appearances covering 25A innings for Riverside, in the Class A California League. The consecutive games and innings without allowing a run rank among the longest streaks in league history. The parent San Diego Padres moved Soltero up to Wichita, in the AA Texas League last week. Pedro Martinez (formerly Aquino), who pitched in Spokane with Soltero in 1987, also put together an outstanding streak recently.

Martinez went 39 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run for Charleston, S.C., in the Class A South Atlantic League. Another ex-Indian pitcher, Joe Bitker, was less fortunate than Soltero and Martinez. The Padres recently released Bitker, who spent his entire pro career in the minor leagues. Bitker turned pro at Spokane in 1984 and spent the last two-plus seasons with Las Vegas in the AAA Pacific Coast League. Former Pullman High School star Casey Crook has been named to the GTE Academic All-America College Division second team.

Crook hit .374, stole 36 bases and collected a school-record 76 hits in 59 games for Briar Cliff College, an NAIA school in Sioux City, Iowa. Crook majors in mathematics and physical education and carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.76. Crook, a junior shortstop, made the All-NAIA District 15 first team after leading the Chargers to a 49-14 season. Crook owns a career batting average of .358 and is 15 shy of the school record of 194 career hits. Steve Farrington, a former Eastern Washington University player and assistant coach, has been named Coach of the Year in the Western Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.

Farrington guided Lower Columbia Community College of Longview to the Western Region championship.
