fcy'naunnp- y. The Spokesman-Review Spokane Chronicl') Sheriff still getting calls, but "nothing has panned out Where Julie Weflen Disappeared Coulee Hite Rd. Seven Mile Rd. calls seriously, and tries to follow up each tip if details are specific enough, he said. For every call to the sheriffs department, theres been at least one made to Mike Weflen or his family.

I think most people are sincerely trying to help Weflen said. And I dont want the calls to stop. One of them may be just the thing to tip us off as to where she is. Detectives have not ruled out some of their initial suspicions, including the possibility that Julie may simply have left on her own. But evidence at the scene and later interviews with family and friends indicate that it is highly unlikely that she walked away, Schulz said.

Julie Weflens former husband had been considered a suspect when deputies were unable to locate him immediately after her disappearance. But the man was ruled out after he proved he had been in Auburn, at the time. We havent had one promising lead, said Detective Jim Hansen. With as much publicity as weve had, thats not surprising. Hansen said the posters and media exposure have people casually looking for Weflen, but her description could fit many people and the sightings are usually untraceable.

Weflens case is unusual, detectives said, because she disappeared without a trace. TLa BPA has offered $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved with the disappearance, and the family put up $20,000 for her safe return. Last Sunday, volunteer divers for the county Department of Emergency Services searched Long Lake and parts of the Spokane River for Weflen. No further expeditions are planned. Mike Weflen has searched some of the area surrounding the substation with a bloodhound, and Friday he used dogs to look again.

Detectives arent optimistic that dog searches will discover anything. We dont think shes in the immediate area, Schulz said. But at this point, its hard to know just what to think. The longer we go without finding her, the more likely it is that shes been killed, he said. Theres always the possibility shes being held somewhere though, and that is what keeps us looking.

No purchase necessary. See store for details. IMPORT By Anne Windishar Staff writer The Spokane sheriff department is still getting calls from people convinced theyve spotted Julie Weflen. But every tip sends detectives on a chase that many are beginning to think wont end. Nothing has panned out, said detective Sgt.

B.C. Schulz. Weve followed every legitimate tip called in, but common sense seems to dictate were simply not going to find her. Weflen disappeared Sept. 16 from the Bonneville Power Administration substation northwest of Spokane where she was working.

An extensive, two-day search was conducted by the sheriffs department, and Weflens family and friends have continued the search. Except for tire tracks that appeared to lead toward the Seven Mile Bridge, sheriffs detectives found few traceable clues. So far, the volunteer search has come up with nothing. Schultz said the department has Month- (Continued from page 1) to help her family in the three-week hunt for clues. Julies mother came from Oregon and her in-laws flew to Spokane from South Dakota as soon as they heard she was missing.

Next-door neighbors pitched in, as well as people who had never met her. Each has been motivated by personal drive that drew them to continue a search that has sheriff detectives stumped. All I know is that I couldnt look at the person in the mirror if didnt do everything in my power to get Julie back, said Owen Berio, a BPA electrician who works in her office. Everyone always felt good when Julie was around, he said. Its a feeling that is generated from inside her.

We always said, The only thing that makes this job bearable is Julie. Now that shes gone, we know its true, he added. Co-workers at BPA have been covering for Julie, putting in extra time to pick up the work left by her absence. Her supervisor said the agency has made no plans to replace her. And people who know Julie say they wont stop searching for her because she herself isnt one to accept defeat.

Shes had some tough times, especially when she was growing up, said Daisy Anderson, Julies aunt. Through it all, though, she had the sweetest disposition. If anyone could make it through a tough time, its Julie. For example, at a time when Julies 14-year-old peers were preoccupied with what to wear to school, she had to wear a full body cast for six months. The cast was to correct a curved spine and only allowed her to stand or lie down.

Julies mother, Bette Miner, remembers washing her daughters hair in their Portland, home as she lay on the counter with her head over the kitchen sink. She never stopped smiling, Miner recalled. For six months the only thing Julie could move was her head, but she was strong then and its something that made her the strong person she is now. The condition was corrected after a year, but Julie was unable to pursue her dream of racing horses. She channeled her energy into her love for animals and into what many people call her natural ability to make people happy.

Her mother-in-law remembers just over a month ago when she and Julie were talking and they spotted a bug crawling around on a house plant. Julie picked up the plant, carried it to the door and carefully shooed the bug away. She kept talking the entire time, remembered Phyllis Weflen, shaking her head. It just didnt occur to her it would be easier to kill that bug. But the easy path was not one Julie preferred to travel.

As a journeyman pool operator for BPA, she spent her work days maintaining power stations and lines. The intricate work required a three-year apprenticeship and, as the only female operator in the Upper Columbia region, Julie took her work seriously. Shed never ask for help, but any one of us would have gone out of our way to give Julie a hand, Marsh said. She didnt need it though. Technically, shes just as sharp as anyone else.

Julie grew up in Oregon and, after an unsuccessful marriage early on, met and married Mike Weflen in June 1983. Phyllis Weflen, who visited the couple this summer with her husband, said she had remarked at the time that Julie and Mike acted like newlyweds. They were as happy after 4 Mi years of marriage as they were the day they got married, she said. They were building a future together. Mike Weflen has not been able to return to the home where he and Julie lived.

He said hes tried to move back, but the memories are too powerful. I Just dont know how to explain it, he said. Without her there its impossible for me to stay. I dont know when Ill be able to go back, but hopefully it will be with Julie.
