A dream came true for Dane Iorg Saturday night and moved the Kansas City Royals within one step of the ultimate comeback in a season of dreamlike comebacks. Iorg drove in two runs with a one-out, pinch single in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Royals to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and force a deciding seventh game in the World Series.

Cougar football is Saturdays 21-16 Pacific-10 Conference loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils, viewed by the smallest Martin Stadium crowd in 12 years, 14,875. It was the sixth time this year 2-6 WSU has outgained an opponent this time, the count was a whopping 445 yards to 217 but thats just a part of Cougar football. Heres some more: ASU got one touchdown off a 44-yard drive set up by a 28-yard punt return and another on a 3-yard drive following an interception. Washington State twice was inside the Sun Devil 3, did not turn the ball over, and yet did not score a point.

One came on a controversial first -half ending. On a fourth-and-14, WSU with, no rush on, according to Coach Jim Walden, draws a 15-yard roughing-the-kicker penalty that moves the ball into Cougar territory and gives Arizona State a first down. But nothing personifies Cougar football like the following incident. Trailing 21-0, WSU has rallied to within 21-14 on a 6-yard Mark Rypien- to-Kitrick Taylor pass, and a 2-yard touchdown run by Kerry Porter. It is early in the fourth quarter.

Arizona State, hampered by a clipping penalty on the kickoff after Porters score, takes possession at its own 5 yard-line. As the Sun Devils break their huddle, Washington States Marvin Adams comes rushing onto the field. When I looked up and saw No. 97 running out there you thought the same thing I did, Walden said. What the hell is he doing? What Adams was doing was giving Washington State a 12-man defense.

This was more than enough, certainly, since ASU was coming out of the huddle with only 10 men. Thats why, when ASU quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst pitched the ball, no one caught it. The Sun Devils did not have a running back in. Maury Metcalf of Washington State pounced on the loose ball at the 4 yard-line. Doesnt matter.

This is Cougar football. ASU gets a first down at the 20 because WSU had too many men on the field. Weve played eight games, and the only time all season we have 12 men on the field is when our opponent fumbles at the 4 yardline, said Walden, explaining Cougar football. We made enough mistakes to get beat by a little, he went on. Ive made the same speech six times.

(See WSU on page 4) How many kids get the op. to hit in that situation? Iorg asked Ive dreamed about it all my life. Its certainly a thrill. The dream of winning a 10th world championship on this night turned into a nightmare for the Cardinals, who had; gone ahead in the eighth inning with a pinch RBI single of their own by Brian H3rD6r We had the World Series won tonight, Cards Manager Whitey Herzog said. I still think were the team of des tiny.

We were picked to finish last. Harpers go-ahead single for the Car-; dinals came off Royals left-hander Charlie Leibrandt, who lost Game 2 of the Series after taking a two-hit shutout -into the ninth inning and who appeared headed for another heartbreaker until the ninth. He retired the first 15 batters, he faced and set down the Cardinals in'; order six of the first seven innings but stood to be the loser again. Iorgs hit came off Todd Worrell, who had tied a World Series record by strik-; ing out six consecutive batters in relief, in Game 5. The inning included a disputed play at first base, a misplayed foul ball, a botched sacrifice bunt attempt, a passed ball and an intentional walk.

Rogets? Forget it. There is no synonym. What were looking for a word, a phrase even, to sum up this misbegotten football season at Washington State University can only be said one way Tc fo Coug. Verb f-' intransitive. Usage: I was going to buy a lottery ticket, but JOHN BLANCHETTE Staff writer pass sure of stopping the clock.

Never mind that any time Rueben Mayes touched the ball for WSU, it meant 5 yards. Thats irrelevant. You always have to take into account the Coug factor. None of this is very pleasant. Every week Jim Walden sits in front of the press and shakes his head at the course of events and acknowledges, We made just enough mistakes to get beat by a little.

And every week the opposing coach wipes his brow and says something like, I aged 10 years during this one. This was one of the guttiest defensive performances youll ever see by any football team. John Cooper, ASUs head man, said that. He also said, "I dont know how many people they had, but it should have been a sellout. Why? Cougar fans can see this every W66R.

They can see the Pac-lOs best offensive team in a spot where it needs barely a yard for a first down and be sure the Cougars wont get it. They can see the Cougar defense not a great unit, but not nearly as hapless as it was eight weeks ago hold a team like ASU to 19 legitimate yards in the second half and know something like a roughing the punter call will ruin the stand they need. Walden is no Webster or even a Wagnall but he can define the essence of this team. This is a good football team, he insisted. It just depends on how youre (See Blanchette on page 4) Devils better than 2-to-l 445-217.

Nothing new there. Of WSUs eight opponents, only Ohio State has piled up more yardage. But thats too general. They Couged play by play. There was the interception that set up the Sun Devils awesome two-play, 3-yard drive for their first touchdown.

There was the punt return by ASUs Anthony Parker that begat the second TD the one in which he slipped a tackle, got drilled backward by a Cougar into the grasp of the original tackier, slipped it again and rambled 28 yards. There was Ed Blount replacing Mark Rypien at quarterback to the cheers of 14,875 fans imagine the bedlam! and trotting off in favor of a punter three plays later. So much for the first quarter. Blount had better luck in the second quarter. He was sacked for 2 yards from the WSU 5 on first down and called timeout on second.

At this point, the easy way out was to take the safety, but the Cougars crossed up everyone and made a first down. That was only an aberration. By half end, Cougaring had reached a new what? High? Low? That was when WSU drove inside the Sun Devil 5, made no turnover and came away with not point one. Instead, the Cougars ran out of time. A lack of timeouts, a sweep, a slow unpiling by the zebras and an incomplete pass burned up the final 20 seconds and any chance WSU had at even a mere field goal.

WSU coach Jim Walden was burned up, too. He felt he got zeebed. By Dave Boling Staff writer POCATELLO Ultimately, a missed extra-point kick meant the difference as Idaho State upset Idaho 38-37 in a Big Sky Conference duel. But the game ended in what is becom-; ing typical Vandal-Bengal fashion, with! two touchdowns being scored in the fi-: nal 62 seconds of play. When Vandal freshman running back, Todd Hoiness broke two tackles and turned a loss into a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left to play, Idaho assumed a 37-31 lead.

But Vandal kicker Brian Decicio, who earlier had broken an NCAA Division I-AA record by kicking his 13th consecutive field goal, muffed the point-after, kick. Still, when ISU took over on its own 29, the Bengals had just 56 seconds to retaliate. It didnt take that long. Bengal quarterback Vern Harris was almost intercepted on first down and was sacked by Mark Schlereth and John' 1 Andrews on second. But on third-and-15 with 43 seconds left, Harris found sophomore Butch Cas- ton streaking up the right sideline be- hind the Vandal coverage.

Caston pulled in the pass around the Vandal 25 and motored into the end zone to complete the 76-yard strike. Idaho still had 33 seconds left and moved to near midfield as Rick Sloan connected with Eric Yarber. I decided against it and the guy in line behind me bought one and won a million bucks. I Couged. Put it in Websters right between couchant, which means lying down WSU certainly doesnt do that on the football field and count, which the Cougars will certainly bone up on this week.

Couging is a cooperative effort, requiring the help of officials, fans, timekeepers, opposing players; luck and fate. Some might think it is fate, but thats not quite right. And dont for a minute think that to Coug is the same as to lose. It just ipeans you dont win. On Saturday, WSU Couged against Arizona State, 21-16.

We it last year (in the defensive backfield). But our job is to look ahead, to prepare for each game as best we can. This week, its the Seahawks, who are 7-0 in meetings with the Jets. Seattle is 4-3 this season and second in the tough AFC West; the Jets are tied with Miami for first place in the East. The Seahawks are a solid, well-coached team, said Walton.

Besides, the recent history of the New York Jets isnt much worth examining. The Jets got off to a 6-2 start last season, then blew a lead in New England and began a six-game slide which led to a 7-9 National Football League record. It was the second straight 7-9 mark for the Jets under Walton.

This year. New York jumped to a 5-1 start, then committed a bunch of mistakes to lose in New England last Sunday. And, as in 1984, the injuries have begun to hit the Jets, who play host to Seattle today. Im not a here-we-go-again type of person, said Walton when asked if he felt a sense of deja vu because this loss to the Patriots came with a weakened backfield.
